Facebook Bonds with Virtual Reality By Acquiring Oculus VR

One of the biggest and most surprising acquisitions this month was Facebook buying the recently trending virtual reality startup Oculus VR for $2 billion. In the announcement, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a clear statement saying, “Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow. Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.” The fact that Oculus is what we could perceive as the future of computing can be guessed from the marvelous success it had achieved from it’s crowdfunding campaign (raised over $2 million) and venture funding (raised over $91 million) till today.

Facebook Bonds with Virtual Reality By Acquiring Oculus VRThe massive potential that lies in creating a more immersive gaming and entertainment experience through Oculus Rift was pretty evident right from the beginning. But what’s left to see is how this acquisition will turn social networking into a more revolutionary experience in the near future and not prove to be a rift in the Oculus vision. As Zuckerberg says, “Imagine not just sharing moments with your friends online but entire experiences.”

Google Glass Goes Fashionable With Ray-Ban and Oakley Versions

Though Google Glass has had quite a lot of popularity amongst tech enthusiasts in the industry, it still lacks acceptance in the non-tech mainstream market. That’s the gap the company has finally decided to bridge with their recent partnership with Luxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban and Oakley for manufacturing stylish Google Glasses in the future. Futuristic designing and the classic look from these popular eyewear brands is what can give the Google Glass a chic touch in appearance.

Google Glass Goes Fashionable With Ray-Ban and Oakley VersionsAndrea Guerra, CEO of Luxottica Group, said in a statement, “We believe it is high time to combine the unique expertise, deep knowledge and quality of our Group with the cutting-edge technology expertise of Google and give birth to a new generation of revolutionary devices.” The fact that Project Glass is indeed a venture that’s brought a new outlook for the smart eyewear market is evident from the way it’s proceeding towards making this device a craze in the general market.

Riding In the Clouds With Spike Aerospace’s Windowless Jet

Spike S-512 Supersonic Jet from Spike Aerospace is going to do something which was pretty unimaginable till date. It’s trying to bring virtual reality into the world of travel and that too in aircrafts which can not only make air-travelling a serene experience but will also help in reducing the aircraft weight by reducing structural issues. This innovative jet will have its inner walls covered with thin display screens which will display exquisite panoramic views from the outside taken from cameras surrounding the entire aircraft.Riding In the Clouds With Spike Aerospace’s Windowless JetAs Mashable likely says, “And while some passengers might be uncomfortable seeing visuals of high-altitude travel from such an immersive perspective, many others will likely jump at the chance to get a never-before-possible window-seat view of the clouds.” That isn’t the whole plan! The jet is also going to travel at supersonic speeds which can make journeys from LA to Tokyo be of five hours and from New York to London be of three hours only. Truly something we look forward to riding in the future!

Android Wear, A Revolution in Wearable Tech

Like Project Tango that came up last month, Android Wear is the rocking platform which Google had for this month that has truly given wearable tech an opportunity to shine with its individuality in today’s world. This time they haven’t chosen a wearable device to launch, instead what they’ve focused on is launching an Android operating system for wearable technology. The icing to the cake comes in the form factor which are smartwatches that are no way close to creating hesitance among the masses for acceptance.

Android Wear SmartwatchesFrom incorporating voice inputs to reaching your fitness goals effortlessly, Android Wear has a lot of lucrative features that has made it a hot topic of discussion right from the day of announcement. Though the team has launched the Android Wear Developer Preview for all the current Android apps, what awaits the real magic is “Android Wear SDK” which will actually provide developers the opportunity to bring Android Wear more close to what it claims to be.

IBM Watson’s Cognitive Cooking System

There’s hardly been anyone from the tech world who’s not aware of IBM’s supercomputer in artificial intelligence – the Watson. But what’s truly got eyes rolling (even in the rain) was the recent revelation of this gem’s Cognitive Cooking Program at SXSW on a food truck. This is a system that can cook up excellent recipes depending on user preferences by diving into the computer’s analytics and machine learning tools. This isn’t about food only, it’s a mere introduction to the potential Watson could have in designing consumer centric applications in the future.

IBM Watson’s Cognitive Cooking SystemFlorian Pinel, senior software engineer in the Watson group had said, “Let’s say you want to try to make new perfumes, or maybe you want advice for how to dress better, or if you want to create personalized travel itineraries—these are all pretty much like recipes.” It’s pretty simple, all you need to do is enter your preferences and the Watson will automatically narrow down a list of suitable recipes from its’ never-ending database.

Bloodhound SSC Could Be The First Car of 1,000mph

Richard Noble’s unconventional idea will take you back to the ‘60s and ‘70s when science and technology had taken a new shape with Apollo and Concorde. As Arstechnica reviews, “The idea of a car capable of 1,000mph might sound ludicrous at first blush, but consider Noble’s credentials. The British businessman is responsible for previous land speed records in 1983 and 1997, the first of which came with him behind the wheel.” Bloodhound SSC is indeed a land speed car invention that can spearhead the world of technology towards a new era altogether.

Bloodhound SSC Could Be The First Car of 1,000mphThe key feature which makes Bloodhound SSC stand out is by being powered with a jet engine and a rocket designed to reach 1,000 miles per hour (1,609 km/h) together with a Cosworth CA2010 Formula 1 V8 petrol engine auxiliary power unit. According to Noble, the first attempt to snatch the record would happen next year. But like all land speed records, this success may also take several attempts to reach its goal.

The Pocket Drone Shines on Kickstarter

This is a marvellous flying robot which is capable of taking pictures from the sky, thus unfolding a new era of photography for the camera lovers. The team behind Pocket Drone, Airdroids believed in making the drone technology affordable for the common masses at the same time reducing the bulkiness that exists in most of the drones out there till date. That’s probably the reason why this project has come up with flying colors on Kickstarter as one of the most successful drone projects ever seen.

Timothy Reuter, president and co-founder of AirDroids tells Techcrunch, “Hitting close to a million dollars and becoming the most popular drone project in the history of Kickstarter validates our idea that there is huge demand for convenient and accessible consumer drone products.” Finally, George Lawrence’s idea of pioneering aerial photography with innovative kite based camera system in 1906 has made its way into the modern generation of drone technology which makes it all the more exciting and easily accessible.

That was quite some exciting buzz from the tech world that caught our eyes in March. Let’s hope the pace goes faster next month with more extraordinary innovations. Till then, Happy Gadgeting!
