The speed of change in our modern world is truly blistering. Even if you purchase the latest model, most devices will become obsolete within five years. In contrast, a well-made analog watch will last for generations. Furthermore, a classic timepiece just works. It doesn’t need charging every night, and you can tell the time without WiFi.

This is the mechanical bliss that you can enjoy with the VA-01. This beautiful watch is made with all the care and craftsmanship you would expect from the Swiss masters. But unlike the grand old names of watchmaking, Variant aims to make premium quality truly affordable.

The mission seems to be finding success. You could easily mistake the VA-01 for a watch that costs ten times more. The handsome face is protected by a flat sapphire crystal, with a triple layer anti-reflection coating. It includes a small seconds dial and a date window.

There are four different styles to choose from. They range from the colorful “sunburst blue” to the minimalist “matte black” dial. You also get a choice of straps. Each VA-01 comes with both a classic calf leather strap, and a Milanese stainless steel mesh which is water resistant. In both cases, four colors are available.

The luminous dial markers are placed by hand, and the casing is made from surgical grade 316L stainless steel. It measures just 0.3 inches (7.5 mm) thick, and the material is resistant to corrosion. In addition, this watch can survive underwater dives to 328 feet beneath the surface.

Moving Parts

The feeling of quality is not restricted to the external features. Whereas many cheaper watches use plastic components, Variant is cutting no corners. Instead of losing or gaining 20 seconds each day, this Swiss Ronda quartz movement varies by only that amount in a whole month.

All the parts are metal, and the battery lasts for between 24 and 40 months. Replacement batteries are easy to find and completely affordable. You can even stop the movement to conserve the battery, if you wish. Finally, Variant offers peace of mind through a two-year guarantee.
