Personalitree Couples Conversation Game

Editor's Rating
4.7?
Discovered on 2017-08-15

Forget kissing online frogs, and using computer screens to size up your sought-after Cinderella. The Personalitree Chain Reaction Conversation Game helps players size up potential soul mates in a matter of minutes. The clever conversation game was inspired by the New York Times article “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This.” That article spilled the secrets of a scientific study. The findings revealed that asking and answering a series of questions in a certain order can accelerate closeness. Based on that research, Personalitree helps new daters connect at light speed while committed couples can reignite that fire. You can play the chain reaction conversation game for 15 minutes or five hours. Be careful who you play with though because you might end up together forever.

Please do round 2. I would also support a second campaign.

I would also support a second campaign.

any chance of this kickstarter having a round 2?
JT Wong with Ad Magic
Wow, CoffeeGeekBrad, thank you for the compliment and your experienced insight! I'm going to do all these things!

Is this game on boardgamegeek.com? The main group of people looking at games on kickstarter are board gamers. That is the main source for all things board games. Also getting this game in the hands of well known board game reviewers would do wonders. Too late at this point but if a 2nd attempt is needed.... There was a more of an art/drawing game I backed twice on here. Second time it funded but barely. Creator didn't seem to think board gamers were the audience and so the first one failed and 2nd just barely made it. Guy who goes by the name Rahdo reviews games from a 2 player perspective because it's mainly just him and his wife who play. If he likes this and does a review it would easily succeed. These are just my thoughts as a board gamer and backer of quite a few projects. To hit the high funding goal I think you really need to tap into the board game community. If this doesn't fund I think this project could be set up to succeed on a 2nd attempt if things are done differently. I too am worried about this funding. Game looks great though. :)

Hi Christopher!
Thanks for really great suggestions, I actually backed Itchy Feet, too!

@JT - worried that the momentum has died on the campaign. Time for some aggressive (paid?) advertising on facebook and kicktraq? Is the NYTimes or the author of that article or the person they interviewed about this research, are any of them interested in writing about this to their readers/followers perhaps? Maybe reach out and send a form email to all of the other boardgame creators running campaigns right now (eg Radiant, Flash Point, Itchy Feet, Ninjutsu! etc) and ask them to give you a shout out in their next update? That's worked wonders for other campaigns in the past. You can offer to include a shout out for their games as well in your updates. Just some thoughts. Wanna see this campaign do well! :)

Hi Casper!
Wow, 19 years, congratulations! And thank you for your backing! I have two interesting responses for you. Well, actually the first one maybe isn't that interesting, but I think the second one is. Some of the testers realized that both of your 7 red random word cards are face up, they're not a secret. So the couples ended up sitting closer like at the corner of their table to be able to see each other's cards and cause even more conversation chain reactions. So, YES, you can definitely help each other! In the early game testing it was indeed a problem at first, because the couples went through TOO MANY of the random words too quickly. So when discussing it with these couples, it was decided to place in the instructions a proper time to replenish both your 7 random word cards. Helping each other won't break the gameplay now. Secondly, the game went through a lot of broken versions, of course. Early on in the development, I had asked a retired sociologist for his opinion on if the game twists Dr. Aron's sociological research too much. Well, the sociologist really, really liked the game...so much so that he wanted the broken copies. But I didn't want embarrassing broken game copies out, possibly giving Personalitree a bad reputation before it even started! Well, it turned out he's also an ESL teacher. And I gave it to him. He tells me he divides his classes into two groups and uses the cards to help facilitate conversation between them in a fun way, which is especially helpful for the really shy English learners. I don't know if or how they're keeping score, but I was happy the discarded cards were getting a second life! I hope you discover that it helps you somehow, as well! =)

Hi JT, I just backed the game, as it looks like a lot of fun to play with my wife of 19 years. One question though: she doesn't speak English that well. She can hold her own in simple conversations, but there's a big chance there will be some words on the cards she doesn't know. As this game is played 'open' and you work to a common goal, I guess I could help her with those words, or would that affect gameplay too much?
JT Wong with Ad Magic
Hi Charles!
Thank you so much for your backing!
Those are simultaneously words I've never heard together AND the funniest words I've heard together, "...due to unrestrained show of pluck..."!
Charles S Mote Jr
"Production of Personalitree is probably the easiest thing that can be made in the history of things that have been made." Famous last Kickstarter project words. But, backed, due to unrestrained show of pluck. Probably the funniest KS I've ever backed, which has nothing to due with why Warhammer 40k is so popular.

Hi Audrey!
That's a question that's come up a lot, actually. Maybe I should add that to the FAQ. The intent is to play with an S.O. obviously. However, I couldn't control all the playtesters LOL! Girl players had an incredibly fun time playing with their girlfriends, as well. BFFs they share everything with all the time anyway. In fact one playtester even did it with several of her BFF girlfriends like a 4-player game. I wasn't there to witness it, though! Unfortunately, there weren't any guys among the playtesters who played with other guy-friends. So I can't speculate on that. Personalitree just may not be a game that two best guy-friends would be interested in playing. I guess that's why Warhammer 40K is so popular. =D
Audrey
*trying to date in order to play the game (whoops, wording mishap on my part)
Audrey
Hi JT! Love the concept, and I'm really excited to play the game. Only... I don't have an S.O., and I'm not interested in getting one just to play the game. Who else can I play with without having potentially bad consequences while still playing the game it was meant to be played?
JT Wong with Ad Magic
Hi BradandCathy!
Thanks for your excitement! I can't wait for you to get the game too! =) That video...the credit to the artist/animator was left off at the end because that was me. I don't tend to sign my own art. But I also don't like even accidentally getting credit for other people's artistic works. So that's why everyone is credited except the animator there. Technically, I drew everything in pencil first, then used Adobe CC to digitize & move everything. Adobe Illustrator to trace over the characters and objects, and also for the typography. Adobe After Effects for the all the motions and character movements. And a lot of help from very talented friends for the music. I have no idea how the music was done to match the length of the video!

I'm sooo excited to get your game and play it with my husband of eight years. I loved your animated video. How did you create it?
JT Wong with Ad Magic
Thanks, again for all your expertise Christopher! Thanks for the boardgamegeek suggestion -- I've submitted for their moderator's approval! The game's prototypes had always been used as a dating tool, and I failed to also think of it as a game for boardgamegeek! In fact, the genre of Personalitree didn't even fit into any of the game categories dropdown menu there. War Game? Zombies? Farming? Nope, nope, nope. Bluffing? HOPEFULLY NOPE! =D I'll post again when boardgamegeek approves and I can finish the data entry!

Hi Tina!
The game's instructions and box currently say "You Decide." In reality the game gives 4 options. A short game would use one of each tier question card (Acorn, Blooming, Flourishing, Personalitree), and has taken about 20 minutes. Most people opt for 3 of each question card (12 questions), and that takes about 1 to 2 hours. Each question card generally averages about 5 minutes each, but could be 10 minutes if you've just met, or uncontrollably chain-react unto things that have never come up before.
Christopher
@JT Wong - no problem! Glad to help! I would also normally include the tips below about boardgamegeek, but there's no entry there for Personalitree right now. Could you out one up? I think this should be a priority, and make sure to add the review by GeekDad there as well:

Here are two things people can do to help give the game for more visibility (and therefore more backers) at boardgamegeek.com: 1. go to the main page for the game and become a fan by clicking on the heart. 2. go to the images of the game and click on the little green thumbs-up button.

How long does each game typically take?
JT Wong with Ad Magic
Hi Tish! When I first had the premise for the game it was supposed to be for couples who had just met on like Match.com, but then the real-life got in the way and the first few dates fizzled out due both people not discovering enough awesomeness about each other quick enough. But over like a year of playtesting with everyone from dating couples up to couples married for almost 4 decades, new game mechanics were built-in to adjust to the length of your relationship. Those who had been married for a long time were often able to guess each other's answers, so a "Squirrel Thief" card was implemented to be able to steal the other person's answers and rack up even more points the better you know each other! I'm working on a gameplay video which will demonstrate the adjustable-ness! I'm also going to make the full instructions available on the PersonalitreeGame.com website. I don't think there's a way to have downloadable instructions here on Kickstarter? I'll post an update here for the new video and another update for the downloadable instructions once I figure that out. I think I'm going to use Dropbox, but I've not used Dropbox much so I have to figure it out a little bit!
JT Wong with Ad Magic
Thanks Christopher! I didn't know these things. I'm going to send around your great suggestions!
Tish
Is this game for people who have just met, been together for a few years, and/or been married for a long time?
Christopher
Hey everybody, here are QUICK and EASY things YOU can do to support this campaign: - send a short email or add a comment to a video of your favourite youtube boardgamer (Rahdo, Dice Tower, etc.) asking them to cover the Kickstarter before it ends.
- go to the Kicktraq page for the campaign and click on the "visit project" button. Feels redundant, I know but it'll bump up higher in the ranking on Kickstarter.
- Post a comment here! It will also bump this campaign on Kickstarter!
- Ask your friends to back by $1, it will bump us up on Kickstarter by adding backers.
- Increase your pledge by $1 (or more if you want) to help reach the stretch goals.

Hi Mark! That's a good idea! I'll get to work on it right away and make an update when it's ready...hopefully by this weekend!
Thanks for the advice/suggestion! JT

How about a real gameplay video?
