Hi guys. I have to put it up here and say...excellent first class customer service! You're are clearly open to constructive feedback, and I'm delighted that your development continues to go well. i am looking forward to more experimentation with my GENERICS.

@Andrew, thank you very much for taking the time to write your response and the constructive feedback. We are glad you like some aspects of the earphones and urging us to improve others for the future.
First, we want you to be a happy customer, we will direct message you to jointly find a better solution for your Generics. Below is some perspective on your feedback.
On ear-tip size challenge, smartphone cameras cannot unfortunately see ear canal openings, we are limited by technology here; our tips are designed in a way to fit most openings; we tried to make them as large as possible, to create a seal, without compromising comfort. We succeeded with the majority of our test users (89%). For consumers with 'large' ear canal openings this will result in an unsealed ear. We continue to work to improve this aspect of the Earfits.
On sound quality, we are disappointed you didn't like the sound. The sound feedback to date has been overwhelmingly positive from Backers. Sound is of course subjective, however, if it's the low frequencies that are bothering you, the combo of no seal + someone who likes strong bass will like Generics less. Did you feel the same with Generics mids and highs?
On value, we compared our performance vs. similarly priced earphones (Bose & Beats models) and beat both on overall sound performance in lab tests (check sound curve performance graphs on website and Kickstarter). The Sonion balanced armature speakers we use (model 2356, please check them out when you have time) are regarded as one of the best in the industry, specially on mid and high frequencies. Of course having multiple balanced armature speakers in each earpiece with dedicated output frequencies will deliver better sound performance, however, with that we would have had to increase the price of our custom-made earphones by approximately +35% and we chose not to do that.

Many thanks for the head phones...they are a very interesting proposition. Its been very interesting to see how the app feeds into the design and ear shape, and the production quality seems fairly good, but there are a couple of serious problems for the future. 1: the cone of the ear bud is too small, far smaller than most other ear buds and therefore despite the moulded shape will not form an effective seal with the ear. 2: and probably more seriously....the earphone design looks good but the actual speaker sound is not good. its quite tinny and only up to a cheap high street standard (10-20 uk pounds). This really undermines any design advances and fatally compromises the current iteration of Generics. If you can improve this then perhaps you can go far. Good luck.

@Ross, we are sorry to read your disappointment. Despite of not communicating as often as we (and you) would like, ‘an astounding lack of communication’ is a little harsh! Our last Kickstarter communication was less than a month ago and as we have highlighted on multiple occasions PLEASE drop us an email for any question and we will gladly answer. We are faster on email vs. Kickstarter comments platform.

In all cases, we have GOOD NEWS. The Android App has been on Google Play for the last 2+ weeks. We are still tweaking and improving App but backers have been downloading and placing their orders. @Ross, you obviously don’t need to place any order through App because you have already done so, back on March 30, through our alternative App(less) process. Your transparent Earfits, are one of many we have already produced and are waiting to be assembled onto the rest of the earphone chassis. We expect to receive these from our contract manufacturer in China week of April 30. The final earphones will head your way a few days afterwards. We will feel more confident with regards timing once we have these earphones in our microfactory and know we won't face further shipping delays. We will share more details in a few days through a formal update. @Ross, don't lose faith in us, you will get your GENERICS custom-made earphones and despite the delays you will hopefully think they are worth it. All, please let us know if you have any other questions here or drop us an an email to hello@thisisgenerics.com. Thanks.

The lack of communication is astounding. Almost a month with no update. Apparently the Android app is never happening? What exactly is going on with this project? Regretting getting involved with this at all.

Hi guys, thanks for finally sharing the app with us. However, the app is still crushing...downloaded when I received the email and it didn’t allow me to login, now I logged in but doesn’t allow me to carry on after the 1st for colours. So, whom can I contact about this instead of commenting here every time? By the way, looking forward to test the product in April! :)

@David, thanks for reaching out, we understand your frustration given the delays. We continue to work extremely hard to deliver against commitments and you should still expect your earphones in April 2018. The Android App is scheduled for release on March 23 and iOS later this week. We have not shared ANY dates earlier we did not WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe we can deliver. As explained with every communication, these delays were driven by (i) our insistence to deliver a better product/ experience we can jointly be proud of and (ii) some of our partners not delivering against their commitments. We are ultimately responsible towards you, we are not shying away from this. We made mistakes with our time estimates. We are learning and will continue to learn to improve overall performance. We will deliver GENERICS despite the delays. Thank you for your patience.

For the rest of is using Android, should we expect to be able to have our headphones before the end of 2018? If so, when (realistically)? If not, when (realistically)? No optimistic answers anymore. Please provide an answer that you would tell your own family members.

@Backers (with iOS smartphones), we did not release App this past week as promised due to recurrent crashing issues, we expect to release next week. We debugged the App and are very close to release, the crashes are rare, nonetheless, still occurring intermittently and we are continuously working to resolve these. We have already sent out GENERICS to iOS Backers who volunteered to test App, we are monitoring performance with them and expect their feedback over the next 48hrs. Apart from the disappointing delays, we want to deliver a great experience and product with GENERICS. Thank you for your continued patience.

@Senel thanks for your questions. 1. We cannot expedite earphone delivery, as explained in our GENERICS Progress Update #2, the bottleneck is manufacturing in China driven by raw material late arrival and the Chinese New Year. 2. Yes GENERICS will be under warranty for 1 year after you receive them. 3. We are resolving some bugs in our iOS GENERICS App and still intend to release this week. We will reach out to you as soon as we do, should there be any delay beyond this week we will also proactively communicate this.

Hi there, as one of the backers I want to find out if there is a way of speeding the process as the main date jumped from January to April, if some warranty will be coming with the earphones and the application for iOS users was meant to be out yesterday (5th) but for some reason I cannot find it.

@Lucas, thanks for questions. Sonion experts confirmed the differences we see are normal/ Ok and no further interventions are required. Please find a detailed description of differences: 1. Why the difference between GENERICS and the sample Sonion earphone between 11,000 and 15,000Hz?
The acoustics between the two earphones are different driven by ear-tip shape/ size, at these frequencies Sonion sample performs better, however, the difference is hardly audible. Above 10,000 Hz there is little musical information, these high frequency ranges typically capture ambiance and source of sound. As long as there is reasonable output at these frequencies (GENERICS delivers a sufficient 80+dB) the stereo image and ambience of the recording is fine. 2. Why the difference between the typical ‘data sheet’ sound curve and ‘actual’ earphones?
Sound behaviour above 8,000 Hz depends very much on the ear simulator/ microphone used to capture measured sound. The graph shared in the ‘GENERICS Sound Quality Update’ on December 3 is what Sonion lists on their speaker datasheet. This output is measured with a tube directly connected to the ear simulator, this is the standard practise to reflect a speaker’s performance, it is the ‘theoretical’ performance. Reality is different mainly because the distance between the earphone ear-tip and eardrums will vary from person to person; this difference will depend on eartips shape and peoples ear anatomy. Let us know if you have more questions.
Lukas Mader
Review from Kickstarter
Regarding the new update: comparing to the Sonion reference the GENERICS seem to have 10db less output around 15kHz. Also the response graph in the sound quality update showed 10db more in the high frequencies.
Could you explain how this affects the headphone performance? Doesn't this result in a reduced clarity?
If you need any more beta testers you can add me, I use both Android and iOS.

@Steve, thanks for your follow up. We will deliver your earphones in April 2018. You can get all the details in our (just) published update #2. @Andreea, apologies for not answering you earlier, you should have received a proof of payment from Kickstarter. Review from Kickstarter
@Ross, thank you for your questions and Happy New Year! Apologies for the delayed response. 1. The App release has been delayed from this week to mid January due to two reasons:
a) We are not happy with the in App tutorial, this was developed to explain how best to take ear videos, to help users capture all necessary data to allow us to custom-make the Earfits; unfortunately, the director leading this work failed to deliver requirements. We are re-doing tutorial and expect to complete it end next week. We will integrate this into App and submit for review to the App Store, this review should not take more than 3 days. Assuming no unexpected glitches, GENERICS should be 'live' on the App Store by January 17. Should Apple come back with feedback and request changes to App this might take us a few more days to resolve.
b) The video acquisition process on Android needed rework due to an algorithm bug. We have been working this over the past 2 weeks. We know problem and expect to resolve it by next week. We will want to run a few tests prior to integrating this into the rest of the App. Given Google Play doesn't require to review App prior to publishing, we expect to be ‘live’ with our Android version around the same time as iOS. 2. The project will be moving along as soon as App published. With the App, Backers will start selecting their earphone colour and character engraving choices and sending over videos of their ear shape & size. Once we receive this data ‘Earfit’ manufacturing will kick-off. 3. No you will not receive your earphones in January. SEB backers should expect their earphones in February 2018 due to a delay in earphone mass production. The delay was due to a sudden drop in earphone sound performance in the final samples we received. A why-why analysis showed we don’t have a major issue, the vent at the back of our speakers was being clogged by overuse of glue. The assembly process has been revised to prevent this clogging and we are waiting on final sample tests to confirm issue is resolved prior to kicking off our production run, currently scheduled for January 29. 4. Indeed you are a SEB and a questionnaire asking whether you would like a Xmas Gift Card (among other things) was sent out to you on December 18, you haven’t accessed this email. Please check if you overlooked email or it was directed to your junk/ spam folder. If you intended to share the earphones with a loved one over the holidays this must have been disappointing and we are sorry you experienced this; wish you had reached out earlier we would have tried to help. We continued to dispatch Xmas Gift Cards up to Dec 23 and ended up delivering over 90 cards. Please let us know if you have other questions. Moving forward, we will be updating Backers on project progress regularly.

@Lukas, different Earfit colours will certainly make identifying Left/ Right easier. We don't currently have this flexibility in App, adding this feature at this stage will place more pressure on us in getting App out soon; I doubt we can pull off but let us come back to you. This is certainly something to look into for App v2. Meanwhile, we do mark the earpieces with L & R to help you tell which is which.

@Ali, Thanks for your questions. Here are your answers: 1. We have 3 buttons on controller, you see the front 2 (volume up/ down), we have a back button for play/ pause/ skip. You have full controller cabalabilitties that work for both iOS & Android. 2. Sound is subjective, just like food, however, in lab sound testing GENERICS beat leading global brands and with 91 consumers using different earphones, 88% prefered GENERICS performance. See update #4 for more sound performance details. 4. Backers will select colour and characters to engrave together with taking a video of their ears using GENERICS App, we will send backers instructions of how/ when to download App next week after campaign closing and collecting some backers info. 5. We already kicked off the production process; we have completed multiple production stage milestones i.e. Engineering Samples, Pilot Productions and are now moving into the final Mass Production Stage. Barring a MAJOR unforeseen event, we will ship to ALL Super Early Bird backers in Jan. 6. Not a case, a carrying pouch made of TYVEK® will accompany/ protect GENERICS earphones. Thanks for points 3 & 7 :-)

Hi Generics Team, happy to be here and I would have couple questions if you don´t mind: 1. How is the skip, play etc. functions working as I can see just two buttons? 2. Comfort seems the most important part; but how much does it effect the sound quality? Would a second pair of earfarms not neccesary? 3. Passive noise cancelling is great; thanks for that! 4. How do I choose the colours etc. and how do you find the perfect size for my ear? 5. If I pledge for January will I receive it in January (including production, quality tests (!)) 6. Is a case included? 7. I wish you all the best :-))) Kind regards from Germany
