Kira Full-Size Mechanical Keyboard

Enhance your typing experience with the Kira Full-Size Mechanical Keyboard. Featuring a unique RGB underglow, the Kira comes with custom mechanical switches. Additionally, it is fully hardware programmable, allowing you to turn any key into a multi-function macro without active software. Kira provides all the keys you need in a compact layout. Likewise, its custom keycaps use durable, wear-resistant plastic. Plus, the print won’t wear off either. The keycaps also won’t show oil or shine easily. Furthermore, the color-coded mechanical key switches set the Kira apart from other mechanical keyboards. Similarly, each color corresponds with a distinctive tactile experience. You can even choose the ideal switch for your ergonomic requirements. In fact, every switch on the Kira is easily replaceable without any soldering, resulting in a different feel.

@Thomas, thanks! I tried it out and selected the metal case and at checkout when I put in my code it just subtracted the pledge amount for the plastic and gave free shipping and then I paid the difference.

@Nicholas Just to add to your question, I've been trying to get some details about the quality (depth) of anodization to get a better idea of wear resistance. Any and all details much appreciated!

Hi, wanted to check how dark is the black aluminium version. I'm not sure if it will be pitch black like most of the plastic keyboards (e.g. filco), or sort of a greyish metallic black. Also, I assume that the LEDs are SMD LEDs so any transparent switch housing would work? Thanks a lot!

@Tony I would expect so, but you could always try it, and if it acts the fool, just empty the cart and start again. The coupon should only expire once the transaction is complete.

I have a dumb question. I pledged for the plastic version of Kira as I was not sure if I wanted the aluminum version at the time. I believe Kono had mentioned that you could change your pledge once it came time to pre-order (perhaps I misunderstood and if I did, then this question is moot). I got the coupon code, but can I change my order and get the aluminum body instead of the plastic and pay the difference and use my coupon code still?

It didn't slow down Kira, to be clear. It slowed down the coupon creation process. Regarding time to choose which switch you want:
Input Club 2-time creator about 22 hours ago
The switch testers will arrive at the end of the month. If you want to pick one up sooner, NovelKeys is a site that we're on good terms with. They have a ton of options. You don't need to use the coupon right away, and we'll send out a warning email several days before we close the Kira Kono page. That should occur in mid-July.

It says in the update that the manufacturers slowed down production somewhat. Can we still expect these boards to begin shipping in October?

Several of you have expressed concern about switch selection (welcome to mechs btw!) and that is understandable, there are tons of options and it's hard to say what you will like until you get your grubby little fingers in them. It's not clear yet what our timetable is but I'm sure I:C will allow folks time to order and try the switch options before locking in our selections. So if you find yourself getting too impatient or just don't want to limit yourself to trying the options shipping with this board. You can get switches and switch testers at novelkeys.xyz Remember this little guy is hotswap so you can always change if you discover something you like better later.

@Iordan A. Halatchev if you follow the email's instructions, it explains when to enter the coupon code. You need to do it on the shipping charge page, not on the first page of the checkout, otherwise it won't give you that free shipping.

I was hoping to get a switch tester before finalizing my order, as you said in update 6 one will be available in May and I don't know which switches I want - the guide is not the same as feeling them personally, especially if you don't have that much experience with different switches

do we need to redeem the coupon code asap or we can redeem it later? I am asking this because I have no experience with mechanical keyboards& switches.
I also want to first try the switch tester & then I think, I'll be able to choose which switch is best for me.

FYI to those confused like I was, when you hit the link in the email you’ll be directed to the pre order page. Before you hit the “pre order” button you must choose your color preference, switch and the original material you ordered (metal or plastic). I was confused and thought I had to choose after, but thank you Alec @kono for fixing my order.

Just an FYI: For those of us who have a Shopify account, if you login at the checkout screen, it'll bypass the shipping method and go all the way to the "Review order" section. You'll need to click the "Return to payment methods" link, then click again on the "Return to shipping method" link, where you may paste your coupon code in the "Discount" text field. This should apply the KS free shipping to the order and zero-out the amount due. You may then proceed with and complete the checkout process as usual.

WTFrak? I have to submit credit card info to complete the shipping charge? No way, am I giving that info out. Why is PayPal not an option??
Thomas W. Dyer II
Review from Kickstarter
@Enigmatic: The coupon is a voucher for the keyboard at your pledge level. So, for me, I went to the kono store, placed a Kira with Box Royals and black plastic body and went to the cart page, where I had a total of $179. I then applied the discount code from my e-mail, wherein my cart total became $0, and stayed $0 through the shipping and confirmation stages.

Hum??? A little confused here? I was a backer on Kickstarter? I received email to fill out preorder to pay again?/ choose my options? Use coupon thingy? What the frak?
I’m no rocket scientist, but I’m a little lost here. Can someone please explain this in English?
How & why did this get so diluted?

@illusionskeeper Honestly, you can't go wrong with Box Pale Blue if you're looking for a clicky switch :) They're better than MX Blue in pretty much every way. Crisper tactility. Less wobble. No rattle. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that they produce the click sound in a different fashion from MX Blue — namely, they use a click bar compared to the traditional click jacket of MX-style clicky switches. The result is that the click is much crisper and not rattly at all compared to MX Blue, but there are two noticeable clicks: one on the way down, and a less pronounced, but still crisp one on the way up.
Watch this video to see what I mean: https://youtu.be/2_Z2G0aKl80 (Box Pale Blue is just a heavier version of the Box White seen here)

@Ilya Oleynikov
I'd say either the Speed Coppers or Box Royals given what you're looking for (I personally like Hako Clears as well, but they're much heavier toward the bottom). Royals are all the rage in the enthusiast community right now :) Since this board has a hotswappable PCB, you could always get one set of switches now, then purchase another one later and replace it with ease. If you're looking at it from a pure value standpoint, then get Box Royals (or one of the Hakos) as they're the newest and most expensive switch out of the bunch. Regarding other switches you may consider:
Hako Trues – Typing on these right now. I like them, but they're not everyone's cup of tea, so I generally don't recommend them. Like the Clears, they're much heavier toward the bottom (even moreso than the Clears).
Hako Violets – Haven't tried them. I've heard good things, but they are way, way too light for me (even lighter than MX Browns).
MX Browns – I'd personally stay as far away as possible. All other options are much better switches IMO. That's just my opinion, though. The best thing you can do right now (other than getting the official Kira switch tester, which will be available soon) is to take a look for yourself at the specs and force curves of these switches over on I:C's site:

Got the Cherry MX sample and I personally like MX Brown, but I’ve never owned a mechanical keyboard. So, I don’t really know what to expect... I would like a highly tactile, silent, medium weight switch...

@illusionskeeper - I'm sure many here could make recommendations for switches, but since so much of it relies on personal preference we'd need to know what you like. Do you enjoy your MX Blues? Are they tactile enough? Too tactile? Do you like the click noise or want something quieter? Is the spring weighting good or do you want something that you have to use a bit more force on? Have you ever used any other switches that you like or didn't like? Any comments from you about any of these preferences would help =)

Need to get that switch samples before making a choice.
I have been using blues. (I assume, cherry mx, i am using this keyboard: http://www.coolermaster.com/peripheral/keyboards/rapid-i/) In the event I dont get the switch sample in time to make a decision for the the KIRA. Do you guys have any opinions on which switch I should pick?

@Jansen Velasquez - We did think about that - but we do refund orders completely at any time prior to our production cut-off (in July), so even if they do double purchase we can definitely solve it for them!

Hi, just received the email regarding the update and I think it would be confusing for users that link you gave for the pre-order as they may double purchase the keyboard if taken in mind as the kickstarter survey (some may under-read the update as the actual kickstarter survey which is not). I think it would have been better if you had sent the ACTUAL Kickstarter backer link later than have the kono store pre-order link sent in first to avoid confusion and doubling of orders. That is all. Hoping to get the kickstarter backer link within the week tho. Thanks!

@Carlos Echenique – We’ve run into a bit of fun with international shipping for our creation of the Kono – Kira page for all backers – we are trying to get it resolved today so that we can launch late this week / early next week. We also will not be adding more switches at this time – though Kira is hot-swap, so you can change out the switches very easily. @Vladyslav – Kira has essentially the same stabilizer setup as a standard keyboard – with one exception. The right shift key does not need a stabilizer. Here is a picture with stabilizer positions - https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1994/3097/products/Kira_Stabilizers-min_1024x1024.png… @Jansen Velasquez + Robert Burgess – That is basically all we’ve been working on for the last 10 days! We are almost there – we just need to test a few things with a live Kira product page on the site and then we will be good to send a unique Kickstarter backer page. @Paolo Umali + Jairo Rodriguez – Update today! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lekashman/kira-mechanical-keyboard/posts/2200830

@Vladyslav It looks like the Kira would probably need five 2u stabilizes (left shift, backspace, enter, numpad plus, and numpad enter) and one 6.25u stabilizer (space).

@evienz Yes, I'm talking about massdrop GMK drop. They have plate mount option so I don't understand why you think they wouldn't work. I just want to know stab quantity and sizes required for Kira layout.

@Vladyslav stabs used for the Kira board are plate stabs. You probably are talking about the GMK ones on Massdrop; they will not work on the Kira.

How many and which size of stabilizers do I need for this keyboard? There is a drop of GMK stabs on massdrop and I'm trying to determine which combination I need. Thanks!
