McDowell Time DelRay Auto-Quartz Watch

Editor's Rating
4.8?
Discovered on 2016-05-05

The McDowell Time DelRay Auto-Quartz Watch is a modern take on a traditional WWI trench watches. It blends the vintage round case & lugs with an updated hybrid auto-quartz movement. The custom 44mm case uses wire lugs and gives you those bold looking large displays without looking too large. The watch also comes with a 22mm watch strap that makes it a quality design altogether. What makes it even more adorable is the use of Seiko YT57 movement. It provides the benefits of both automatic and quartz watches in one. Now available on Kickstarter, these wristwatches are definitely out of the box. They give you all that expect from a traditional wristwatch but in a more stylish way. If you have a thing for large dial wristwatches but don’t wish to have them too large, this is the right design to go for.

Got it in the mail today, and it looks awesome. Kinda weird to hear the counter-weight moving, but at the same time it's kinda cool

Oh right, duh. Guess I shouldn't make comments when I'm 1/2 asleep and looking at the wrong kickstarter...

Hi Brain, Based on your strap selection and deciding to wait the 2-3 weeks for that particular strap to arrive is the reason you don't have shipping info yet. We can ship the watch with a different strap now, or wait for the blue strap with PVD Black hardware which to be in stock hopefully soon. You will receive the shipping info once we ship.

Got mine today from Toronto. I got the black case/blue dial with chestnut leather. It's stunning and the lume is great. Only thing to do is work in the leather strap. Congratulations Bill!

Got mine today outside of Toronto, Canada. Really like the look of it in person. Was worried it would be too big but it wears very well.

Hi, Dave -- I'm happy to be a backer and pleased for your success. I placed an order for a black PVD finish on the case (which I'd like to keep), but made a mistake when I chose the blue dial. Could I possibly change my order to a black dial? It looks much sharper. Also, I live in Alexandria and work at Tysons, and would be happy to drive to Rockville to pick the watch up (when it's finished) if it saves you a few bucks. Please let me know at roger.e.miller@gmail.com if either / both of these two points can be handled. Thanks -- Roger Miller, Alexandria, VA

@Mallory It gives you the option when you fill out the survey for nylon strap.

Hi Bill - Any word on adding on the nylon strap? I chose brown leather, but I'd love to add in the blue and white nylon!

Hi Dave, You are not alone in your request as I've had a few backers asking the same question. I've decided to make the nylon strap and option you can choose! The nylon strap with this watch looks damn sharp! When I send out the backers survey, I'll make sure to let backers know they can opt for nylon instead of leather. Also, I'm seeing if I can include the nylon strap as an add-on option as well. Meaning if you want both the leather & nylon, I'm checking if I can setup a process to pledge additional money for the extra strap. This is my first Kickstarter as a creator, so there is a little learning curve when creating these additional options. Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill, I know you didn't meet the stretch goal but where would I be able to get the nylon strap from. I think I would rather have the watch with that strap. Congratulation on the funding,
Dave

Thanks Bill, very meaningful explanation, not sappy. It adds important meaning to the name of the watch. When pack it, add a little note in the box, it will give us a topic to talk about to our friends!!

Thank you for helping fund this campaign and letting this project become a reality. The model name of DelRay does in fact have a meaning. Years ago, when I was dating my now wife, we spent the weekend in DelRay Beach Fl. This was our first vacation together as a couple, and more importantly, the first time we said 'I Love You' to each other. I know, this is horribly sappy isn't it? Anyways, DelRay is also a beautiful beach town that has it's own cool style, kind of stuck in time. They imposed a high-rise building restriction in the 70's (if not earlier), and as a result, the town is isn't covered with soaring condos or apartments. It's a low key place where you can relax and enjoy walking the town. The named of DelRay just seemed to fit and stick. I contemplated many other names, but I always came back to DelRay.

Very Good, Well Funded and Well Done! Does the model name DelRay has a meaning?

Regarding Richards Questions: 1. The Crystal is not domed. We debated this option, but we didn't prefer the distortion of the dome. This is a personal preference and I realize some people prefer the dome, but we choose to keep the crystal flat. 2. The crown is not screw down. I have a few screw down crown watches, and again due to personal preference opted for no screw down. 3. Unfortunately I doubt I can get a red second hand slipped into the production run, but I will certainly try. Fingers crossed I can make that happen for you. I hope these answers don't dissuade you from being a backer. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the quality of this watch. Thanks,
Bill

Is a domed crystal available?
Is this a screwed down crown?
On the white dial can you opt for a red second hand?
Glad to be a backer

This is a watch that I would definitely back, I don't see a lot of auto-quartz movements, let alone through crowdfunding (unfortunately vacation and a new car is in the works in the next couple months).
The McDowell team is very responsive through social media and really strives to connect, and I have to respect that. While I couldn't pledge for a watch, I applaud you for a great campaign thus far and I expect you to reach your goal.
Either way, I'll be following you and hope to get one down the line or maybe your next project!

Thanks Bill for the thorough response. I do hope we get the option for the nylon straps. I personally think they look better on it than the leather ones.

I know what you mean, why does it take so long to produce? Here is how we are operating; assuming we get funded, we won't receive funds from Kickstarter until June 9th. At that point, we will pay for production run and purchase all the required components (straps, dial, case, etc..). I'm giving us 2 months for production, but we may get done sooner. 2 months from June 9th puts us into early August. In August I will personally QC every watch and give a thorough check to make sure everything looks perfect. Once QC is done, we will package and ship out. Therefore, we could potentially get watches out before September, but I just wanted to add extra cushion into the schedule. One of those 'under promise and over deliver' things. Thanks,
Bill

I just read the risks and challenges. You said it's already designed and ready to go into production. I just want to know what you will be doing till September to get it sent out to backers. Hope to see this get funded!

I'm going to agree with James below in regards to the Nato, I really like that look.
With that said, I'm really intrigued by this as don't see a lot of these movements in KS campaigns, so I am confident you're going to get funded.

Hi James, thanks for checking out my watch, glad you like it! I never thought of a non-animal-product option, and that might be narrow-minded of me, sorry. If we get funded, and regardless if we don't reach the stretch goal or goals, I can provide a nylon strap instead of leather, no problem. The travel case is microfiber leather, which is a synthetic faux leather, so that piece is not an issue. Fingers crossed we get funded!!!

Review from Kickstarter
Great looking watch. Really hope it gets funded and makes the stretch goal as I'd actually prefer the Nylon strap to the leather. I don't see leather as a luxury item these days and would much prefer a non-animal-product option, even if it is a faux-leather substitute, including the travel case. Maybe that's something you could consider?

Your eyes are being tricked by the refection of the wood? The cases are either Polished Stainless Steel (Silver Color) or PVD Black Coated. Sorry, I don't have a gold option. Thanks for checking out my project!

Wait...is there a gold coated casing or are my eyes being tricked. I'm looking for a watch like this but with a gold casing
