New Mycroft Open Voice Assistant and Smart Speaker

Get the intelligence of Amazon Echo without the creepy stuff via the New Mycroft Open Voice Assistant and Smart Speaker. Just like other smart speakers, Mycroft lets you ask questions and make commands using your voice. But unlike Amazon and Google products, this speaker is totally open source. As a result, anyone can contribute to the software and add new features. Furthermore, there are no sinister profit-making motives. You won’t be targeted for ads based on what you say. In fact, Mycroft doesn’t even store your voice data. Along with strong privacy protection, this smart speaker is genuinely intelligent. It recognizes natural language, and it also hooks up to services like YouTube, Wikipedia, Facebook, and many more. Additionally, you can control Philips Hue lights and Wink devices via Mycroft.

@Lars I think I wasn't clear. The Home Assistance intergration comes through as a skill. Once you install the skill it should work. This is regadless of the device. So you can enjoy that on the Mark I and Mark II alike. Here is the Git Repo:
Lars Modig
@Joshua is it also then possible to install the home auto SW on the mark 1 or isn’t that possible due to OS on m1 or processor power or something else.
Joshua Montgomery
@Carsten I am still researching what I want to accept, but Paypal and CC are definitely the top options.
Joshua Montgomery
@Carsten Oh yes, the German Customs..... We battled with them quite a bit with our first campaign. Rest Assured the CE mark will be there for them, and we will make sure we do some extra languages in our documentation as well. Working with EasyPost now to figure out all the steps for the easiest clearance.
Joshua Montgomery
@Lars thanks for the support. Check out this what these guys are doing with HA:
What will the payment options be for the after campaign camera addon?
Paypal, CreditCard?
Or can we pay the necessary amount in advance by rising our pledge amount?
German customs is sometimes a little picky about hardware wuth bluetooth and wlan.
Will the mark II have the necessary documents needed for import like a ce mark, german manual, etc.?
Lars Modig
I can't really vait until december so i decided to go for the mark 1 & 2 deal so looking forwatd to get the mark 1 in april until the 2 arrives later on...
So then i have a question related to the m1.
Is it possible to put and or kodi aside mycroft on the mark 1 so i can use the raspberry pi in m1 for more things?
Thanks and looking forward to get my toys 😳
Joshua Montgomery
@Lukas All shipments will originate out of the US. Customs will be something that will be charged.
Will you ship from warhouse in eu or we will have to pay customs?
Thanks Joshua for the fast answer about the possibilities for setting up an own server system. There are plenty of scenarios where it is no option to hand out data, no matter how secure it will be handled. Looking forward to try out the Mycroft Mark II.
Steve Goodwin
@Kathy Reid, @Greg Voronin, Much obliged for the links. I shall have a read.
Mike Gardiner
I pledged for the three-pack. I'm looking forward to being able to use a Mycroft unit. Since it seems to have skills for such things as smart light bulbs, I'm thinking of attempting to see if I can make it realize when I'm arriving at home at night by seeing my phone appear on the network, and turning on porch and kitchen lights automatically. I haven't bothered with smart bulbs yet as I have little trust in the big players in the personal AI field. Mycroft would change the equation. I expect to have all kinds of ideas over the next 10 months.
greg voronin
@Steve Goodwin in addition to the documentation & chat @Kathy mentioned, there are several projects on showing this. Just search under "Sergio Molino" and they should pop up. He has put 3-4 projects up along the lines you are looking for. I should be posting how to attach and use the PiCamera with the Mark I shortly and I have also posted on how to access the PiCamera on PiCroft already. Can't wait to see Steampunk Mycroft in action!
Kathy Reid
Hey @Steve Goodwin, great question. Most of the GPIO pins should be available for use, and what you do with them is up to you. We have some very introductory information on GPIO pins with Picroft here, and join our Chat for more info!
Steve Goodwin
Interesting project, excited to back it. I've order the DIY version. I have visions of a Steampunk Robot head on the wall. A couple of questions:
Are all the GPIO pins available for use?
Can a skill be triggered from a GPIO pin?
Can a skill trigger a GPIO pin? Thanks in advance.
Joshua Montgomery
@Adrian Demetrescu The screen will be capacitive touch with auto brightness. As for the camera used for motion detection, that sounds like another great use case that the community can jump on to build.
Adrian Demetrescu
What kind of touch digitizer will the screen have? Resistive or capacitive? Will it have auto-brightness so it's not too bright at night? Will the camera be used for motion detection so it turns the screen on when you're in front of it?
Piotr Adamiak
@Beki: there are many projects that support what you want. You would just have to integrate one with Mycroft's APIs
Shiva Siddharth
Thanks Joshua for getting back. That clears some part of shipping doubts.
Joshua Montgomery
@Rolina @Farodin I am going to work with EasyPost to get a DHL representative to give us an official statement on this. As soon as I hear back I will update you guys.
Joshua Montgomery
@beki not yet, but do you want to help us build that out? Come over to and comment in the skills channel to see how you can help us with that.
Joshua Montgomery
@Rodrigo Fazendeiro At the moment we support English, but we are building tools for translation. We actually have some team members that speak Portuguese so I imagine that we will start using those tools internally first to QA, and we will do most of the work on that one. We also have some very active community members with the same skills that will help us build on top of our implementation.
Joshua Montgomery
@AJ Dunevent Kickstarter doesn't allow a good way of doing this, but we will set up a survey mechanism after the campaign to allow you to add the camera option to your order of the three pack. You will be able to choose one camera or multiple cameras devices for that.
AJ Dunevent
I upgraded my pledge to the single camera option. Will a discounted three pack of camera-equipped Mark IIs be added as a reward similar to the discounted three pack of non-camera-equipped Mark IIs? That would be fantastic!
Rodrigo Fazendeiro
Hey everyone! Just backed this and super excited! One question is will this support Portuguese (pt-PT) language?
@Farodin: Indeed! I can't stand DHL. At least in the Netherlands, I find that their service is lousy.
Hi, any chance to let Mycroft play music from a Logitech Media Server (Squeeze Server)?
Just to point out one factor about DHL (at least in Germany). If DHL Express is used, which is often the case for international Kickstarter, they will charge you a fee for handling the customs and taxes for you and there is no way to bypass that. The last time I received a package that was declared with a $60 value, I had to pay about 20€ to DHL and it would have been around 9-10€ if I got it myself. Of course it is more convenient to get it shipped to your door, but not having the option to get it yourself is kind of annoying in this case.
Joshua Montgomery
@Shiva Siddharth Just talked to EasyPost. They charge no fee to the end customer, but I want to make sure they are not a carrier. They are a 3PL, basically a logistics company. They did go on to talk about the only fees passed to the end user is the taxes and applied are the ones from your country by your country. Further, he pointed me to the DHL quote on their website that states this, that is alignment from what they have seen using them as the carrier. "You will not be paying to DHL any further shipping costs. Rather, you will be asked instead to pay customs duties, taxes and other import charges related to customs clearance in your home country, as per local regulations." No fees that are charged are the carrier itself for convenience or shipping. I hope that clears it up, but happy to talk with them more if it doesn't.
Kathy Reid
@Julius we do have a MycroftSkill API - you can learn more here:
Kathy Reid
@Noah the whole time messaging space is really fragmented, with lots of different protocols - SIP, WebRTC and so on. It will be difficult for us to add integration with specific platforms, but what we might be able to do is allow interfacing with *protocols*. We're about to release a mechanism that allows our community to upvote suggested Skills - so watch this space!
Kathy Reid
@Shiva Siddarth we are finding out this information as quickly as we can.
Kathy Reid
@Piotr Adiamak Very good question. We're currently clarifying VAT / international shipping / customs with Easy Ship. We did a lot of work on this area for this Kickstarter, learning the lessons from our first Kickstarter.
Julius Ter Pelkwijk
Or even better: I dictate, mycroft writes it down :)
Julius Ter Pelkwijk
I got a question: Could you add an API so that it can connect with IBM chef watson? Then you tell Mycroft what you like to cook, and it gives you some ideas on what you can cook with it?
@Noah, Nextcloud talk would be a nice option as well.
If we've got a camera as an option now, could we get compatibility with Tox/Jitsi/other FOSS instant messaging programs in order to have video chats?
Shiva Siddharth
@Joshua, Can you please find out from EasyPost as to how the clearance is done? Whether they pay the charges upfront and provide a bill thereafter or put the package on hold untill we pay the clearance.
Also, if you could provide some estimate on their handling charges it would be nice and save us from surprises. Its known that EU backers have to pay the VAT (23%), i am not asking about that, its about the fees that EasyPost charges for the clearance. Eg: DHL charges about 17 Euros +VAT for providing the VAT/Customs clearance.
Shiva Siddharth
@Piotr, We EU backers have to pay 23% EU VAT on incoming stuff, irrespective of the courier. DHL and Fedex charge a fee for handling VAT clearnce as well, but I am not sure about this EasyPost.
Piotr Adamiak
@Joshua Montgomery - "but customs/duties will be a part that equation for international backers.". This is slightly unclear. Did you mean that EasyPost will take care of the customs and duties for Non-US customers? Either way could you potentially explore what kind of costs would those be for EU based customers please ?
Piotr Adamiak
How about a Shazam type music recognition skill ? This would be a first of its kind. Whenever you are watching TV and there is some tune you want recognised, such a skill would be of immense value.
Joshua Montgomery
@Rolina We will be shipping from the US. We explored other options for shipping that involved global warehousing, but from all of our research there was an overwhelming amount of data that pointed to not doing this for legal, financial (of both the backers and the creator), and operational challenges. At this time we will be using EasyPost that will securely get your packages to your house, but customs/duties will be a part that equation for international backers.
Curious about shipping. From which country are you shipping, and, if it's not within the EU, is that something that you could offer to avoid the customs and duties for us EU backers?
@Kathy "We're currently working on a way that we can have people vote on Skills so that the most-wanted get to the top of the list." I think it's a great idea, thank you very much
Kathy Reid
@Jon Hill @Piotr @RocknRolla @Daniel - thanks for your feedback. We need to balance precise voice recognition with having a suite of Skills that the voice recognition actually does something useful - it's a balancing act. We're currently working on a way that we can have people vote on Skills so that the most-wanted get to the top of the list. Stay tuned.
Piotr Adamiak
I am OK with 'Good enough' TM ;) but seriously it already has good voice recognition donce Mark I. What sells the hardware is not 100% recognition but the possibility to connect and enhance anything...
Guys, calm down with all the 3rd party services. The Mark II should be about perfect voice recognition, and when this works flawlessly in multiple languages, we can talk about the fancy stuff. Spotify is useless if the device doesn't understand what song you'd like to hear.
Agree with Piotr Adamiak, it would be amazing. Just submit a question, fantastic campaign. Looking forward to the incoming live stream hangout!
Piotr Adamiak
+1 for Google Play and maybe Amazon Music ? It would be amazing if we could integrate all of those streaming sources in one device. Also perhaps Chromecast Audio support ?
