Does this require a fee from a data provider?

I live in Tokyo Japan and have many trips to Asia.
I try to use it at Jakarta and Bali last week.
This product is very hard to use.
Billing for registration is also very dissatisfied with the fact that it is a very expensive connection fee compared with SIM etc. which can be easily obtained locally, in addition to the point that usable time zone is not the stay country standard.
As a result I made a charge of seven times ($ 70) for a 5 day stay.
Connection environment is bad, speed is slow, and it is hard to use.
I regret having purchased this product.

I did not have any luck with it the first time I got it. The app is clunky and not very intuitive. Tried getting support and they have never once replied to the MANY requests for assistance. Radio silence. The only contact I did receive was from a Nuu rep here in Canada who basically explained that the unit is not released outside Asia market and they could not help (see comments below). With all this said, I noticed an app update the other day so I just tried it today and was able to get it to connect and surf with the 10mb connection they said they would set up in a previous comment). Still not sold on this product and will not take it a my sole source for a hotspot. Also very upset about the throttling that was NEVER disclosed during the campaign.

Yeah, this a bit underwhelming. Received the device today, connected my phone, updated, turned it off and went across the street and turned it back on. Bought data and boom! My phone can't connect to the Nuu. It's dumped the device info and I'm out $10. Anyone manage to get this thing working?

Have to get updates from other backers instead of Creater.
And you guys just sent the message to me said the product shipped but didn't give my any tracking number?
Have to say sorry that I really feel don't get any responsibility and respectful from you guys.

Hi NUU Mobile, Since April 11th, I asked you guys about any updates or questions via emailed, messenger, calling, web site live chat but didn't get any respond (just see read the messenger) or the person just said "I don't know."
I really don't know why is so hard for you guys to get any respond?
Right now could I just know the tracking number for my shipment?
Thanks.

Hello Backers! The devices will work in the 100+ countries as advertised. Currently, Kickstarter backers are the only users in North America and the unit is not available for retail purchase yet. If you have questions or need support, please email support@nuumobile.com.

So finally got through to someone (nuu has a small office here in Ottawa, Canada) and contacted them through their web site. Turns out that thu Nuu i1 won't work in Canada right now....in fact will not work outside Asia. "The NUU Mobile Konnect i1 product is currently unavailable in any market outside ASIA. Due to a company decision, the release of this product at retail level in North America was delayed until further notice. " With that said, they seem to be helping me by get in contact with Nuu asia to see what can be done. Will keep people up to date if anyone is even watching the comment section....

Ok, so attempted to get a refund, but no one got back to me (web site sucks). Got shipment notification and today received the Nuu i1. Well....it does not appear to work. Before doing anything, you need to download an app to connect to this thing with the ultimate goal of registering it. The supplied instructions do not match the GUI and ultimately I was unable to "Link" the app to the device, which means I am unable to even test if it will work as a portable hotspot. The build of the unit is nice, but the app kills the whole thing. Was hoping this could replace my exisint hotspot I have (old Netgear) but am going to be keeping this. Going to try and get an RMA on this and try and get some sort of money back.

Three weeks since last update stating shipping would start, was this just wishful thinking? As previous requested please update, this is not how you should treat backers.

I for one would not have backed this project if I was aware of the tiered throttling. I backed this project because of the "Unlimited" claim. There are other options out there that are more competitive to this new pricing structure and it does not make sense now. I will be officially requesting my money back as well as reporting this to Kickstart (even though I know that usually does not give any results). I truly believe that this project would not have been funded if this tiered pricing structure was fully disclosed during the funding period. And to only reveal it through the comments section where most backers will not check is a little underhanded.

@ NUU Mobile I am wondering why such important piece of information was not communicated to us. This is at the heart of "4G" and "Unlimited". I am very disappointed; if I knew I would not have packed.

"All you have to do is purchase a day of unlimited data for $10, connect your Wi-Fi enabled device (phone, tablet etc) to the i1 and presto, you're online with 4G LTE data speeds (where available)!  It's that simple." apparently it is not that simple.

Thats not what your campaign says. It says 4g lte and unlimited data
Not oops, you hit 500mb and now you are unlimited at 3g

Mohammed M:
When purchasing the $10 unlimited data you will get 100% unlimited data for 24 hours. With this plan the data tiers down at a 500 MB interval. For instance at 500 MB it will go from 4G LTE to 3G. We do plan to offer other plan options going forward as we see how/where the device is being used and from user feedback as well.

Review from Kickstarter
Would you please define "unlimited"?
Is there a bandwidth cap after-which the speed slows down? Why don't you offer packages or bundles, such as 50% discount for annual subscription or something like that.

Paul: One of the main differences in our product from others on the market is we focus on security allowing the ability to create VPN connections. Because of our focus on security and not knowing the vulnerabilities of outside devices we can’t allow them to register on our services.

How would you compare the Nuu Konnect i1 with the GlocalMe U2? (a recent Indiegogo project: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/glocalme-u2-ultimate-wi-fi-everywhere-you-travel-internet--2/x/2311556) The hardware seems quite similar functionally (same bands supported, etc.), I presume the real difference here is the business/pricing model. Would it be possible to reregister my GlocalMe U2 onto your services?

@NUU Mobile - Nope, there is no such feature available on my Samsung Note 5. I have checked with my LG as well and there is no such feature available on my LG as well. Noting that your service directly competes with mobile operators/carriers and these mobile operators/carriers can simply disable this feature, I am very concerned about the longevity of your technology.

citiboi: You can check on most Android phones here - Apps > Settings > Advanced Calling. Yes, some regions/carriers block this feature. Currently there are 22 countries that allow this functionality.

JOSE LUIZ B BEVILACQUA: Yes, you can receive calls while in airplane mode. The calls received will use your own phone number and when calling another phone your number will show up as normal.

1) Can I receive phone calls to my own phone number while using airplane mode through NUU Konnect i1?
2) If I make phone calls using airplane mode will the person who I am calling to see my personal phone number on his/her phone?

@NUU Mobile - I am using the Samsung Note 5. How do I check if my mobile phone has WiFi calling. I understand that this feature is disabled on the Note 5 in some regions and/or by some mobile operators. Also, it is disabled in many mobile phones. This is clearly restrictive if I use your service and intend to change or upgrade my mobile phone in future.

citiboi: Here are the answers to your inquiries.
1: Srikanth is correct. To get LTE speeds a 4G LTE signal will need to be available wherever you are using the Konnect. The difference is, that your device (phone, tablet, etc) does not need to have that LTE band already. 2: Our eSIM technology uses existing service providers by searching for the fastest connection in your current location. So if you are in a location that has no mobile service then there will be no coverage. 3: No, the receiver of the call does not need to be subscribers of our service. The Konnect itself operates in 100+ countries, but the ability to use international calling over the device depends on 1 main factor. Does your device support wifi calling in the country you are calling from. 4: The technology and specifications of smartphones is constantly changing, but this feature on most smartphones is called WiFI calling. While we successfully tested it on both Android and iOS devices, the best way to see if your device is compatible is to check with the manufacturer for the latest specifications. Thanks again!

@ Srikanth - Thanks. But I also wish to know what happens if the Country does not have LTE band. Will we be able to have 4G LTE speeds then?

Review from Kickstarter
@citiboi Reg 1. What they mean is that if your phone doesn't have the LTE band, but if NUU is supported in that country then you will be able to use 4G/LTE on your phone via NUU. This iscmy interpretation

Review from Kickstarter
@NUU Mobile - I am Asian and travel all over East Asia (including Hong Kong). To be honest, this campaign is the first time I am hearing of NUU Mobile.
Anyway, my other questions are numbered for your easy response :
1. You have responded that using your ecosystem, subscribers can actually access 4G LTE speeds in countries which do not even have LTE bands, is that correct? How is this possible? Are you using WiFi or bandwidth?
2. As your system uses cellular technology, are you using existing mobile service providers for coverage or do you have your own transmission towers and repeaters? This will obviously affect the 4G coverage and speed. Perhaps a brief explanation on how your system works (minus any proprietary information) will help backers like me understand how you can cover areas which some local mobile service providers cannot even cover effectively.
3. I suppose unlimited international calls will be limited to the 20+ countries where Konnect operates. Does this mean that the recipients must be subscribers of your service as well? If so, must they be connected to the Konnect network to receive calls?
4. In your campaign info, you have stated that international calls can only be made (which DOES NOT include receiving calls, I suppose) with compatible phones. How do I know if my mobile phone is "compatible"? What is the feature which we need to enable to make calls?
Thank you.

citiboi: First off, a big thanks for becoming one of our 1st backers! Also thanks for the great questions, they will help us to determine our FAQs. For simplicity I broke your question down in the form of a Q and A. Q: how sure you are that this worldwide subscription service can and will continue for at least several years without any increase in fees or decrease in coverage.
A: Similar to other MVNO’s, we work with carriers worldwide to obtain access to network services. It is possible that rates could decrease, or increase. Since we do not directly control these rates, it is possible that rates will change. As technologies evolve rates and plans may change along with these technologies. Q: If you have been around since 2012, I have not really heard of you guys.
A: We have been expanding globally for the past 4 years and most of our growth has been outside the U.S. The main reason for this Kickstarter campaign is to gain funds to help build out the U.S. support infrastructure to offer the best possible service to our new customers. Q: As many Asian mobile service providers are already offering unlimited calls and unlimited internet connection (albeit capped 4G connection) at about US$10.00 per day, how is your plan any better than theirs?
A: If you are traveling without the Konnect, and your phone does not have the LTE bands being used in that location, you will not be able to get 4G LTE speed. However, accessing data via the Konnect will allow for 4G LTE speed, even without those bands being on your personal device. The Konnect i1 allows for up to 5 devices to be connected at 1 time.

@NUU Mobile - Since you are not only selling hardware but subscription service as well, I will be direct and ask you.. how sure you are that this worldwide subscription service can and will continue for at least several years without any increase in fees or decrease in coverage. Without the subscription service, the hardware will just be a very expensive paperweight. I have tried reading about your company.. so far, your base is in HK and does not engender much confidence in me. Your website does not provide any info about your financial and technical strength. If you have been around since 2012, I have not really heard of you guys, sorry..
As many Asian mobile service providers (e.g.. AIS (Thailand) and Maxis (Malaysia)) are already offering unlimited calls and unlimited internet connection (albeit capped 4G connection) at about US$10.00 per day, how is your plan any better than theirs?
I do not mean any offense by my comment. Just wanna be sure you will be around for a while.
Thanks.
