Opto – Virtual Reality for the living room

Editor's Rating
4.9?
Discovered on 2016-04-23

The first portable VR headset with built-in audio. An all-in-one device to enjoy movies, games, photos & more! We are making high-quality VR accessible for anyone who owns a smartphone. With Opto, VR is finally moving from the gaming den to the living room. VR content is growing and expanding beyond just games, with documentaries, music videos, Netflix, movies and more now available for VR. Current VR headsets are not designed with this in mind, they are bulky, heavy, have lots of wires and require you to plug in additional headphones. This is where Opto comes in, its lightweight all-in-one design lets you jump in and out of VR when you want – so sitting on the sofa to watch a movie feels natural.

Hi,
still waiting for my OPTO in Italy... news about it?

After reading several reviews here, I feel the creator(s) don’t care much for quality and at ok delivering a sub-standard product. There’s not much you can do about it that throw it in the bin and learn a life lesson.

Still no iPhone 7 plus adapter as promised and I will have an IPhone x in a few weeks anyway. Apparently sounds like it's a pile of junk...how do I get a refund??

Just came back to see what others are finding with this device. Seems almost unanimous that we all got taken by this useless blob of smelly (literally) out of focus piece of junk. Was this a market experiment to see if you could sell a concept that doesn't actually work? Sadly, this is kickstarter so I assume I can't get my money back. I haven't picked it up since the day I got it, and on that day I realized I wasted my money. POOR FORM Opto guys, what a lump of crap you built.

Got mine a few weeks ago, tested them out and it's uncomfortable with the focus only good in the center. The lense is too close so people with glasses, it isn't for you. Well with my glasses on it's better, however, it's even more irritating, still disappointed in the quality.

Finally received my opto and it's defective. The pins for the sound don't even connect properly, this device is very poorly designed. What do I do know?? Please advise.

Received mine. It's look fine and the quality is good. For me it's comfortable but lens quality is very bad : acceptable in the center but catastrophic in the border..... And the other bad news is that the lens are not adjustable, for me they are too close from my eyes.
I don't recommend this VR headset.

11 months after the estimated delivery, my Opto has finally arrived, and boy, am I disappointed! The focus is wrong and not adjustable. Not so much of an issue with cardboard devices intended to be hand-held, but the Opto is meant to hands free! The pogo pins for the audio aren't springy enough for reliable audio connection. No control input is a major problem, of course. And lastly, it's very uncomfortable! Constantly pressing against my ears!

To Adam Bishop's comment below (from a week ago, 9/07), I have also not yet received my order (also here in the US) On 8/27, you stated that all US shipments had been shipped out (and on 8/18, said that "all US backers should have received theirs by the end of next week") Please give an update on when we'll be receiving ours? (Adam, have you gotten yours yet?)

Received 20 units and everyone was Blue. Why not a variety? I remember when I was asked about a color preference, but I didn't realize my first preference would be the color of all of the units. They fit more comfortable to me than others have stated here. It is the focus that renders them useless. UGH!!!

Hi,
I received my OPTO. When I do the Cardboard set up (https://www.optovr.com/setup), the QR code is invalid. What I have to do?
My phone is an iPhone 6s.
Thank you. Paolo

A week later and nobody has bothered to answer my question about the IPhone 7 plus attachment. Is it actually happening? I've had it ages and can't even try it out without this...although from the other comments, doesn't look like I'm missing much. I'll stick to proven products in future.

Fixed Cardboard not orienting properly! Now if only I had a select button and could focus the lenses!

Also, small nitpicky thing, the quality of the speakers/headphones is just atrocious. Incredibly tinny and distorts easily.

Review from Kickstarter
I honestly feel as though no one bothered to actually try this out beforehand or actually check the phones that might be in this. First, you cannot set up Google Cardboard as they claimed without the use of a Bluetooth controller. Google solved this issue by providing a built in "Select" button. Opto did not. Second, I was told some of the more larger phones would still work in this, for example my Nexus 6P. While the 6P does indeed fit into the headset, when putting the phone in the chance of hitting the power and/or volume buttons is incredibly high. Third, the audio jack is located on the right side of the headset. The audio socket is located on the left side (when placed in the headset) of my phone. The audio cable has been glued down so I can't move it without force. This wouldn't be a problem except that many VR apps, Cardboard included, expect the phone to be oriented one particular way, which is with my audio jack on the "wrong" side. Lastly, I wear glasses. With them on, it's not too bad, little tight and I mash my eyebrows into the headset, but I still need to focus the lenses. Oh but wait, I can't. If I take my glasses off to be more comfortable, I REALLY need to focus the lenses. Oh but wait, I can't. I sincerely appreciate the effort that went into designing and producing these, but a bit more effort would've really brought these home to 100%.

I just received mine today, the bubble wrap was intact but the packaging for my opto is defective. It three out of 4 corners were torn and there's a big tear when i opened it as well. You might need to take a close look at the packaging process. Otherwise the opto seems okay so far.

Wow. Got mine today. And as others questioned earlier am I missing something?
It's awful, can't see a movie or video, focus is the major issue and it's absolutely unusuable!!
Do I need an app ? What's wrong with it?
So far it can go in the garbage

Review from Kickstarter
Just got mine today. After set it up and test it. The result isnt what i expected.
First, when i put on the opto, it is not very comfortable. The edge keep scratching my face when i wear it, and it wont stay on one position. Second, there is no adjustment for thefocus of lenses.
Third, there is alot of empty space inside the headset, while i wear it, the lights come into the view from the gaps between my nose and the headset.
Conclusion, this is not a bad vr headset, but need alot improvement in the future for better experience.
To me, it is not worth it to wait for a year for this headset, since the quality didnt meet my expectation.

Review from Kickstarter
Ummm am I missing something? I just got mine TODAY and find it virtually unuseable. No buttons, only one side of the phone is held in place so the other side sticks out and prevents the tiny little magnets from holding the phone on. I have to hold my hand on the cover to keep it on, then I have to take it on and off to change content. The phone has fallen out of it 3 times. Not sure I'm following how this is an advancement, Certainly doesnt appear to have been worth the wait to me.

To share my experience with others, I removed the tabs that hold the phone in place and can now slot my S8+ in. Bit of problem with fogging of the lenses, but suppose that's normal for any such product. What I also noticed is that there is no button on the opto, but if i push the front panel in on the frame, my phone seems to read it as a magentic interference and triggers a button push. I played Crossy VR and was able to cross a few streets doing this.

Hi Cory, Yes sorry for the confusion. The scanning of the QR code was only required for set-up only and after that you can download any app from the AppStore - are are updating the instructions to make this clearer - thanks for your input.

Maybe on your set up page you shouldn't tell us to get the cardboard app which requires us to press a button which the opto doesnt have then unless we buy a controller!!

Review from Kickstarter
There are no actual buttons on the OPTO device, however should you be using an experience that requires input or controls we recommend pairing your phone with a simple Bluetooth controller. It is much more intuitive to hold a controller in your hand than fumbling around and trying to touch a button on the headset. These controllers are low-cost and widely available, I have one of these, which works great: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01EV6NXU2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00… Many VR experiences do not require any input devices to run, including many games, and instead use the accelerometer of the phone and a gaze cursor that allows you to control and select things by simply looking at them. If you are looking for experiences and content check out WEARVR (https://www.wearvr.com/) and download their app from the AppStore. You will see a filter for OPTO compatible apps, there are lots available. One great one I have been playing recently is Space Rustlers that doesn’t require a controller, it’s available for iOS (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/space-rustlers-vr-flying-game/id1068906049…) and Android (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details…). Hope that helps!
