Pen Uno – The Most Minimal Pen

Editor's Rating
4.9?
Discovered on 2015-12-12

Pen Uno is a most minimal pen designed to be a pleasure to write with and beautiful to see. With only 5.3mm in diameter it is one of the slimmest pens ever manufactured, yet it is very comfortable to use because its holding barrel is slightly wider. This barrel also serves as a twisting cap that protects the pen tip when not in use. Pen Uno is precision-machined out of space-grade aluminum and anodized in five distinct colors: space grey, silver, gold, rose gold, and red. Pen Uno uses the widely available Hi-Tec-C Coleto gel ink cartridge. This cartridge writes exactly the same as the regular Hi-Tec-C but it is much slimmer in diameter because it was designed for a multi-color pen system. Taking advantage of this super slim cartridge Pen Uno is one of the most minimal pens ever designed.

The rotating part always loosens up completely when I twist it, therefore when writing, it always just moves around. Not sure if that makes sense, but it is a bit of an annoyance that the pen doesn't function properly with the cap not staying put. Any help?

@max. The pencil has a safety mechanism to prevent pushing the lead out by accident. Just unscrew the end knot by half a turn and it will work fine. Thanks.

Started using my pencil uno, can't figure out how to put more lead into it, also seems like it doesn't work, there's one piece in the cartridge , but it seems like the mechanism is unable to push the lead out :/ the pen on the other hand works completely fine.

The pen feels cheap, like it's made out of plastic. The aluminum on aluminum screwing mechanism also sticks with how much play is in the threads. It's a flawed design. This was an overall sloppy product with very little thought and testing. What a joke of a design brand, straight out of LA, of course. I wasted my money; would not recommend.

After over a month of use and cleaning my pen still cant open smoothly. Takes about 5-6 twists of the cap before I can use my pen. Starting to weigh the idea of function over form.. and the number of laughs from my coworkers. It couldve been so cool! But now its a pretty novelty for me maybe a regift.

Sorry to hear that. The ink will never dry. Most likely the tip was damaged while writing or if accidentaly dropped. This is a very reliable cartridge - one of the best in the market. Your extra ones should last until completely empty.

Review from Kickstarter
I love my pen but it stopped writing after a week and a half of use. Is anyone else having this issue? I ordered a couple of refills but at this rate the pen will be worthless after a month. Since the tip of the pen is not actually covered I feel like the pen is simply drying out. Is this ink supposed to be special and able to withstand drying out?

@artnotek: Wax is a thick substance that can be used for a variety of uses depending on its consistency and properties. In this case, they're talking about using a type of wax as both a lubricant and a gap fill to prevent the sleeve from wobbling and/or scratching the pen surface.
.
That said, I don't know anything about which waxes would be good for this and which wouldn't, so I can't recommend a particular type of wax or where to obtain the right kind for this job.
.
@Backers: If any of you can suggest a good wax for use on these pens, it would be appreciated.

Dear backers, if your pens are not opening smooth enough you can use a bit of compressed air to clean the residual micro particles of the anodizing process. You can also remove the ink cartridge and clean your pen with warm water and soap. Finally, you just use it and after a period of time it will be smooth. Thanks.

Echoing @shinku's feedback below after using for a few weeks. When screwing the cover to open position, the friction between the ring and the cylinder cover isn't enough to hold it. While opening, or if I start writing, the cover will loosen and disconnect from the ring. I almost want to take off the cover just to make this pen usable...

Review from Kickstarter
Posting feed back after 20day's using. The lid has two parts, a ring on the front to prevent over-screwing, and the big cylinder functioning as the handle. Now sometimes if I screw a bit harder (more than 40% of my full strength) the ring goes off and the cylinder is ripped off as well. I admit using friction to assembly parts is not a bad idea, but the nature of metal doesn't really support the mechanism. Please make more experiments on the prototype next time.

Received my dark grey. On opening and before use I noticed some scratches by the writing tip of the pen. Turning of the cap was not smooth, and there were squeaky sounds. After like two more turns the scratches just got worse. I suspect there were some particles inside the thread that scratch off the anodization. That's a pity, it could've been a perfect pen.

I want to know what is a wax? is that an air compressor or something?
i got my pen, i was aware of the issue some os us faced and i can't hide my deception when opening mine.
the gold rose one i got is truly a pain to open, it take a long time and a lot of turn to open, the roll can't be done in one turn like the video, something is like blocking the movement inside the clip.
i will enjoy this product because i have still backed in and the other one work great and give good writing feeling, but my deception for what was promised in the campaign or videos and what i really got will be here and i think i will never buy another one.

Tiffany Fordyce, Hello; thank you for your reply and detailed instructions. I purchased the pen and pencil. I tried not tightening the pencil cap all the way. The pencil seems to work fine now. Thanks again...

@Ian McDermott: Did you screw the pencil back all the way in? That could be your problem, as the pencil kits are designed to stop functioning when screwed in tightly in order to prevent accidental clicking during transport. Unscrew the back a turn and try again.
Tiffany Fordyce
Review from Kickstarter
@Yao Li: It's really simple. Here's a step-by-step.
.
1) Unscrew the back screw on your pen and remove.
2) Remove the pen's ink cartridge. You can gently tap the back of the pen on a table and lift, and it should fall out readily.
3) Slide the pencil unit into the pen body, writing end first.
4) Slide the pencil converter rod into the back of the pen body, with the holes inside the pen body.
5) Slide the converter screw back into the back of the pen body around the pencil converter rod. Screw in loosely. You're ready to write! Click the pencil rod just like you would any clicker pencil.
6) When you are ready to transport your pencil, hold down the clicker and gently slide the pencil lead back into the pencil to protect the lead. Afterward, screw in the pencil converter screw back tightly to prevent the clicker from functioning and accidentally pushing lead out the writing tip.
.
That's it!

Got it yesterday,
Exterior have a little bit uneven.... but it is still ok for using.
and about the turning, I give it some "WD40", and it quite smooth now. If want to give it a score, It should be around 70-80. (100 = perfect)

Review from Kickstarter
Just got back from an extended trip and found the pens in my mailbox. Came here to see if anyone had luck with the spin mechanism working as in the video. Apparently not. I've opened and closed one of the pens at least 40 times so far (minimum of 8 full rotations) and see that it has loosened somewhat, but still no anywhere near squeak free or ready for a smooth flick of the thumb. I've opened three of my five pens (also bummed that the plastic tubes weren't designed with a cap for reuse) and see that the rose gold pen is the roughest so far and very difficult to open/close. It seems that the threading on the rose gold is off.

Received my pens. The space grey was well made, everything I expected.
Rose gold however, is not.
The threading is causing some issues with opening and closing the pen, and that it is scratching there body of the pen. The cap is also not well made, it has a slight flare at the top, probably due to the stopper

Follow up on the custom sleeve I mentioned in my full review: I got this done a couple days ago and am very pleased with the way it turned out. The only thing I'm not happy with is the closure, as this is next to impossible to use correctly when I don't have a crochet hook or yarn needle with me. I need to figure out something else to do for the closure. As it stands now, this acts more like a custom giftwrap for these units rather than a convenient, protective, and decorative sleeve. @Helmet
Also, we designed the pencil with a safety mechanism to prevent pushing the lead out while moving it. What you need to do is to unscrew by a tiny bit the part that holds the pusher and the mechanism will be smooth. Once you are done you can tight it all the way and you will not be able to push the lead out.

@helmet
Thanks for your input. A few things to note. You ordered a grey and a silver pens and only one converter in grey. This converter is used to transform your pen in a pencil. If you wanted a matching set, you would have needed to order a full pencil in your desired color and not only the converter. The squeaking is normal and will completely go away with use. The noise is the result of micro particles of dust during the anodizing process. If you don't want to wait until they go away you can use a little of compressed air. This will also allow the opening and closing to be very smooth and with some practice be able to do it with one flick.

Review from Kickstarter
Wow...You really saw me coming. Really disappointed about the change in the oening and closing (not being able to do it with a flick). You cant even open them with one hand like they showed in the video? Did we really get the same things we ordered at this point?? These were the things that attracted me to this project! This is why I backed for as many as I did! Was I really only supposed to get one felt pen sleeve even though I got 5 pens??? The clicking mechanism on the pencil is extremely stiff and when I put pressure on the paper with the pencil the "lead" slides right back in making it impossible to write anything. Further I got two variants of the "silver" or "grey" or whatever when they are supposed to be the same ( I wanted a pen and pencil to be matching). Is this normal? (not me wanting a set but getting two different kinds of grey) Some of the pens "squeak" when turning the covers and since we have to turn them a dozen times it makes it pretty annoying. Is it possible to request a refund at all?

@Creator The pen is having the same issue today after your suggestion. It wrote for about an inch of space, then nothing. I can try writing for a full minute, and still nothing comes out. Whatever is supposed to let the ink come out, either pressure or a ball is not working. Please let me know what I have to do be sent a replacement. Thank you,

Received! Time for a full review. I received Red, Black, and Rose Gold pens, and I received pencils in Rose Gold and Black. I will be offering reviews on all of these. The full review can be found at the link below, but I’ll provide a few key points here as well. Overall impression: 7/10
.

.
First off, a few key manufacturing ‘glitches’… and some disillusioning.
.
The so-called ‘Black’ is not actually black. It’s navy. See comparison images in the link below or in the full review linked above.
.
http://imgur.com/a/PTP7u
.
After cleaning out the threading some, the sleeves seem to work well enough, although on one of the units, the sleeve is indeed causing damage to the pen body. The threading seems to have no set distance within the unit, however, making the sleeve extend more or retract more on some units than on others.
.
The screw backs experience similar discrepancies, with the screws sitting further into some units and sticking out from the pen body on others. One of the units I received did have a screw back that sat flush with the pen body.
.
Speaking of screw backs, the mechanical pencil converters have a slight problem. If you screw the back in all the way, it won’t function. One must loosen the screw back in order for the pencil to be clickable.
.
One of the pencil mechanisms I received was coated in some manner of white gunk. No idea what this was, but in that unit, the anodized parts of the converter kit were scratched all to hell.
.
That’s pretty much the basics. If you want more details, see the full review linked at the top of the comment.

Just received the pen and I'm thrilled. I just thought I'd provide a counterpoint to the few people who've found fault: having to turn the grip a few times to open isn't a major inconvenience if you're actually using it as a pen, and the payoff is that the fully screwed grip is more secure. Bad luck to those who have received pens with minor manufacturing issues, just want to remind the creators that most of us are very happy! Aesthetically it's just as gorgeous as expected and I look forward to impressing with it for many years to come.

The ink cartridge is very reliable. Differences in pressure and temperature might have affected the refill. We would suggest to leave it pointing down for a full day. Should be okay afterwards.
