KeyWe Smart Door Lock

Editor's Rating
4.9?
Discovered on 2018-06-12

Modernize the way you protect your home with the KeyWe Smart Door Lock. Built with ANSI Grade 2 Deadbolt and durable materials, this lock is as secure and safe as they come. Likewise, it uses 128-bit AES encryption for the connection between the door lock and the app to provide encrypted signals. It is also always being updated to ensure eternal security. Furthermore, the app blocks logins and deletes all data if there is an attempt to jailbreak or if it detects any rooting. This smart lock offers six different ways to unlock the door. The unlocking options include Auto Lock & Unlock, Touchpad 20 Passcode, One Time Password, Guest Key, NFC and Mechanical Key. Similarly, the KeyWe can store up to 20 passcodes per door lock, allowing each user to have their own entry code. The KeyWe also supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Z-Wave, offering a scalable solution.

@Christopher Turner
Hi, Christopher. Thanks for your comment.
Yes, there is WiFi bridge as hardware and WiFi bridge as an app which can be installed on an Android device.
The app is free but requires an old or unused Android phone. Requirements for the Bridge App are:
- Android 4.3 or higher
- Bluetooth 4.0
- Permanent power supply
- Permanent internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) We will add it to our FAQ:) Thanks
Christopher Turner

Sorry for the follow-on since I can't edit my comment. Please add a FAQ that addresses the design and usage of the wifi bridge app.

Review from Kickstarter
@KeyWe - I think that the wireless bridge app needs to run on an android device that stays in the home is a pretty critical requirement. I'm guessing that it needs to be within bluetooth range of the lock in order to work, right?

@Engku Abdul Kadir Fathi
Hi, thanks for your comment. WiFi Bridge allows you to unlock your door remotely.
You can also check the status of the door, too.
If you already have Z-Wave hubs like Smartthings or Wink, the WiFi bridge will be useless.
We will provide a free WiFi bridge app which allows your old or unused Android phone to remotely access KeyWe smart lock.
To integrate our lock with Alexa, you will need a Z-Wave hub. This is Amazon policy, and there is no way to 'talk' to Alexa directly.
However, locking and unlocking the door automatically or getting notifications will work without WiFi bridge or Z-Wave hub. Thanks

Hi! I pledged for the smart lock but without the bridge. I am not quite sure what the bridge does, but without the bridge ....can i still unlock & lock the door automatically hands-free via my phone's Bluetooth without taking out my phone from my pocket? Will i still be able to instruct Alexa to unlock / lock the door via voice command? Will i still get notifications on my phone on who unlock/locked the door? What are my limitations without the bridge? Thank you.

Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for your comments. Two-factor authentication is just one more option for our backers who don't feel safe about using NFC technology.
As @Tiffany mentioned, this feature can be turned off:)
We will keep the lock secure AND easy to use.
Thanks for your input and have a nice day!

Two factor authentication is nonsense for a smart lock and makes the lock pointless for me. Do better.

I don't disagree with probable success. I am concerned with some of the security issues, and I don't feel that 2FA is the answer here. I personally find 2FA cumbersome and irritating. The entire point of a smart lock to me, is convenience. Thankfully, @Creator did say that 2FA can be turned off if we don't feel the need for the added security, but my thought is that 2FA shouldn't be necessary to ensure a secure lock in the first place.

Oh yes one more thing KeyWe is using a Schlage-C type cylinder in the lock and Schlage is one of the best in the key cylinder market.

IMO KeyWe has a high probability of succeeding with their Smart lock campaign. The reasons that I see this are that 2 years ago they already produced smart locks and have been shipping them to 6 different countries. So, this is just an advancement on that lock technology. They are also very responsive to their backers listen closely to what they say and are flexible enough to come up with solutions to their needs when it is practical and affordable to do so. Their main goal is security and building a solid product. Nothing is ever a sure thing but KeyWe has a proven track record, and I believe they can do this!

@ K.G.
There are reasonable doubts about Kickstarter campaigns in general.
We will continue to communicate with our backers as much as we can and also update you as much as possible. One thing we can promise our backers is that we know what we are doing and your warm comments make us do our job better. We won't let you down:)
Thank you so much for your comments.

@K.G. - should clarify my statement - I'm only asking because if there are credible issues that need to be considered, I would like @KeyWe to respond accordingly as that will impact my decision as well. I have friends who are engineers (of various sorts) and some of them are not going down the smartlock route for their various perspectives of hacking, security, etc. If it is just a general belief that your son has, then that's one thing, but just like how many others talked about specific issues or areas they would like clarification on, it gave @KeyWe the opportunity to respond accordingly. Please don't see this as an attack on your son, just another consumer that would like to know more details. thanks!

@KeyWe, my son (an engineer) told me not to get KeyWe or any lock like this from KS (because of many reasons) but I believe in KeyWe team so I will not drop my pledge. Please don't let me down 🙂

Thanks for the help. On behalf of the entire team, I would like to thank you for being a part of our campaign. It means a lot to us.
@Ross Kim
The 2FA is configurable. If you don't want to use it in 2FA mode, you can turn it off:)
@James Windau
Place the WiFi bridge just between two doors, and it will be in the Bluetooth communication range:) Thanks again, backers ! Have a great weekend.

What kind of range from Bluetooth should we expect from the wifi bridge? Seems like I have about almost 50ft between my front and back doors and I want to make sure the bridge will reach both locks

@James Windau: @Creator mentioned that master keying will be an option when we complete the survey. I'm assuming there will be an addon price for this.

If I buy 2 locks will they come keyed the same so I won't need a different key for the backdoor and front door?

@Chris Gomez: The KeyWe lock is configurable via bluetooth. You only need the wifi bridge if you wish to access your lock from somewhere outside of bluetooth range.

@Lee Harris
Hi, Lee
Thanks for your comment. 1)As we started our campaign, backers from GB told us about the British Kite Mark, which is not mandatory but it seems that you get a certain insurance discount when you have it. So we decided to apply for the Kite Mark, and it seems it is going to take about 7~8 weeks to get the certification. We will update you on that matter. 2)Yes .. you can unlock the door with a simple thumb turn. Thanks

Hi. I’m really interested in buying some of your new smart locks and bridge, and I have 2 questions.
1) For insurance purposes, can you tell me if they comply with British Standard BS3621?
2) For fire safety. does the inside part of the lock unlock with a simple thumb turn?
Thanks!
(It looks really great!)

@Chris Gomez
Hi Chris,
Thanks for your comment.
We decided to work with a 'Kickstarter-Certified' pledge management service.
We will send you a survey which is integrated with checkout to confirm your orders and purchase add-ons before shipping. The survey will be sent soon when our campaign was ended. You will be able to buy a WiFi bridge at a discounted price.

I dont have a google home or alexa. Im assuming i would need the bridge then to even configure my lock via the app? Could i not communicate with it via bluetooth (but not have the ability to remote unlcok it because of no bridge)? Shouldnt there be a cheaper bridge add on for those of us purchasing the multi pack locks from you?

Thanks again:) You're a great help :)

You can have it rekeyed with a locksmith.
@Anthony Brunetto
@Tiffany Fordyce gave the perfect answer. Thanks for your comments. Have a great day!

Review from Kickstarter
@Anthony Brunetto: You do not need the wifi bridge if you are using Amazon Alexa or Google Home. KeyWe is compatible with both, but both of those services use z-wave technology to communicate with their respective systems. KeyWe uses the same z-wave communication with the z-wave hubs, so if you already have a z-wave hub, the wifi bridge will not be useful to you. You can connect remotely to your lock with the z-wave hub associated with your home system controls. Yes, the KeyWe will work with Alexa and Google Assistant, assuming you have the z-wave device to control them.
Lisa

Maybe a silly question, but what are the options If a physical key is lost? Can the KeyWe be rekeyed? If so, would it have to be done by KeyWe or could it be handled by a local company?

Good Day! Quick question. I have purchased the lock with the wifi bridge. I have noticed in your video/pictures that this will work with the Amazon Alexa product. Is this also compatible with Google Home/Home Mini? Thank you!

Review from Kickstarter
@Michelle Peglar: Also, to add to my previous comment regarding your first question, if you plan on having Z-wave connected devices - such as Google Home or similar - in your new house to run other things - like lighting, for instance - you will need a z-wave hub to control them all anyway, and you can just assume that you will not need the wifi bridge as a result.
Tiffany Fordyce
Review from Kickstarter
@Michelle Peglar: To answer your first question, you'd need a bridge to directly open the lock with an app from somewhere outside of bluetooth range. The Wifi bridge offered here is one option, but you could also use a Z-wave hub of some kind instead of a wifi bridge, so if you already have z-wave connected devices at home, you can skip the bridge and use the hub instead.
.
Alternatively, if you're trying to open the door for a visitor, you could send your visitor a guest key instead. This would not require any kind of bridge or hub, but it would require that your visitor be capable of receiving your message - probably a text - and inputting the code you give them to open the lock.
.
To answer your second question, yes, the KeyWe does have a mechanical lock and physical key.

Sorry if this is already answered... but: if I want to use an app on my phone to open my door remotely etc will keywe connect to my existing wifi? Or does it need a hub or wifi bridge? Also just to be clear, keywe has its own mechanical lock? We’re building a new home and just trying to figure out what door hardware we need.

Thanks for your comment. After a long meeting, we found a solution which will reduce the risk of using NFC key cards. We will post an update about that issue very soon. @James @Ryan
We heard you and will consider the colors which are more universally used.

Review from Kickstarter
In fairness to the creator, there are secure mechanisms by which NFC can be well and securely implemented by leveraging cryptographic processes in a compatible card, such as a Mifare Ultralight, but it would require the lock (or separate reader hardware) be capable of completing a personalization/enrollment process with the card. Serial-based card identification is the low hanging fruit... By far.

@James Windau I agree completely. Universal finishes that match existing hardware would be ideal.

Also would it be possible to have the 2nd stretch goal color be brushed bronze color and not red. I can't imagine a lot of people would want red as a lock color as it's a pretty sharp contrasting color but brushed bronze/nickel is used pretty universally

Hi @keywe ,
First of all i’m thanking you guys for what you’re working on and the way you response to all kickbackers are cool, this is a great project and happy to backed it.
I don’t really have a major issue from the start until @Qualified Backer recent comments about NFC system UID that broadcast to anyone walking by. I dont really understand this NFC system by the way, except i think it’s more safety than manual lock. Hope you guys can explain more about the safety issue and update more safety system if needed, which is the main reason why i like this project in the first place.
