NixC Vintage Modern Tube Clock

Editor's Rating
4.7?
Discovered on 2017-10-23

Old meets new to present time with the NixC Vintage Modern Tube Clock. Enjoy a unique combination of the aesthetic appeal of a vintage tube clock with the performance of modern technology. Featuring classic tube displays and hand woodwork, NixC looks like an antique item until you turn it on. Then you can see the electronics inside the tube lamps. Additionally, you can change the backlight of the tubes to your preference. You can choose to display a single color at all times or turn on transitions. It’s even possible to switch the backlight off entirely for a pure tube lamp design. Likewise, you can easily change the settings remotely on your phone. This feature allows you to set the time and adjust the backlight effect and color. Plus, enabling sleep mode preserves its lifespan.

I received my clock today and while it has great promise, it sadly is not functional. The numbers only light up part way and flicker. I let it run for a little while to warm it up, but it did not help. In addition, the brass foot closest to the power cord became very hot, to the point I am worried that it is a fire hazard and might burn my furniture top. I opened it up to see if there was an electrical issue and found the foot touching a black metal part inside. I am not an electrically savvy person, so I can't figure out the problem. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Still haven't heard anything about my shipment. Who all has received their product?

Review from Kickstarter
@Herald Seng, Thank you for the great news! According to the colour setting, pay attention if clock stands on a flat surface and nothing is touching the knob this may cause a change in colour or try to slightly turn the knob - if it is stuck between two values it may overwrite the remote settings.

The NixC arrived on wednesday. Looks great :) The app seems on the first look a bit disappointing (no own code) on the second look it has this extra geeky touch. Changing colors with via the knob works fine. Setting the color remotely works but the new setting gets overwritten by the knob-setting after a very short while. Any advice how to make the remotely set color become sticky?

Is there any update? I still haven't received my clock.

Cool, a new project launched, school, and a month with no updates on this several months late project. Zero focus, terrible creator. Wish I had the opportunity to rate him so people considering his future projects would know how terrible the experience with him is.

Hello
I am look forward to complete project.
Can I change v1 to v2 back from now?

Review from Kickstarter
Hi there - I’d like to take a v2 if I can as a v1 backer.
Olek
Review from Kickstarter
@Harald Seng, the main difference is introduced a choice of vertical or horizontal tubes. Due to the delay in delivery of NixC v1 all the clocks, regardless the version, will have updated version of a software (most important differences: better support for remote control, programmable action when ambient light changes, easier time setup)

Review from Kickstarter
A swift update does not take much time / hurt but reduces the worries of the folks who put their faith in you. What exactly are the differences between v1 and v2? Hardware/software wise. Please a comprehnsive list not just a vage few words.

Unfortunately, a delay was out of my control. Delayed manufacturing overlapped with my university activities what caused lack of new updates what I am very sorry for. I am doing my best to finish the project as soon as possible.
@Bob Harrision this is actually a great idea. Anyone who would like to upgrade to version 2 please send me an email to info@letb.co with a subject NixC upgrade and in content please provide your Kickstarter name and the model you would like to choose (vertical or horizontal tubes), although its delivery may be extended to NixC v2 shipping time - I will do my best to ship it before this deadline.

Hi .. As you have released V2 and not shipped V1 are V1 backers getting the option to go to V2...
Sean McGrane
Review from Kickstarter
Yeah. Definitely steering clear of any future projects by this Creator.

An absolute kick in the teeth for backers of your v1 - no deliveries and v2 is now out. I am so disappointed in you Olek - i wanted to back a good idea but I feel used.

I have just posted a new update.
@Sean McGrane unfortunately, delay on an initial NixC project was out of my hand. I try my best to speed up the whole progress and I can ensure you another project launch does not have an effect on NixC v1.

Somewhat disappointed to see a v2 project on KickStarter when v1 hasn't shipped yet and we haven't received an update in a month. Why not focus in finishing your initial project before starting another? Especially since it's late?

Hallo Olek, can we get an update? What is the current production status and the status of the android app? Looking forward to the update. Harald

Hallo Olek, it would be great if we could an update from time to time (weekly or biweekly) about the status hardware/software/production/timeline/anything else of interest the good/the bad/the ugly. With best regards, Harald

Thanks for taking my suggestion for an ambient light sensor. Remember that I would want the display to shut off when it is dark because it means I left my office; some people might want it to get brighter depending on ambient lighting. Shutting it off when it is dark may also help people sleep if the light from the clock distracts them. And of course shutting it off when it is dark conserves the life of the nixie tubes.

@Herald Seng, I am sorry for late reply. I am currently working to integrate remote control with Android. It should be done before manufacturing process which will start in November.

Hallo Olek, do you have any news to share with us? Will there be an android app? This seems very importand from the usability point of view. For me personal it is mandatory as I do not own an iOS device to use as remote control. Looking forward to hearing from you :) Harald

@Harald Seng
Currently, I am focusing to develop NixC to the best possible standard. I consider all the suggestions and within my and hardware capabilities I try to make an amazing clock. Although, I am constantly evolving my knowledge and skills and it is possible that something even greater will be made over time.

Thx for your quick reply :) Yep most PCs are not really portable but there are also windows cell phones, tablets and laptops. It would be a nice addition. Android seems pretty mandatory as many folks do not use iOS devices. You wrote about future versions. Will there be a way to update the firmware? or when the changes to the hardware are such extensive to exchange the circuit board? Upgrade could be done by a noob or would it require soldering or so?
Olek
Review from Kickstarter
@Herald Seng Thank you for your comment! Power supply is external, I am currently dealing with suppliers but my requirements are that it will work all over the world and have different wall plugs. Nixies probably will be easily removable. A wooden base is coated. A remote control is over Bluetooth. App is working on iOS and I am trying to figure out Android devices as well. Controlling it from a pc is not a really mobile way to control it, so I stick to smartphones. Currently, clock does not have a feature of stopwatch or an alarm but I am constantly developing my projects so maybe in one of the next versions :)

Heya Olek, was looking for such a clock! Got a few questions: - Is the power supply internal or external?
- Which specifications will the power supply have input & output (V/A/Hz)?
- Will power supply have a fixed or removable power cord? Pls say that it is separate ^^
- Can we chose which kind of cord (well which kind of power plug) we get? - What is the chance for a heat jam? - If a Nixie needs to be changed - how would it be done? With soldering or is there a socket for "plug'n'play"? - Will the wooden base be coated for easy cleaning? - The mobile phone connects to the clock via Bluetooth or how?
- Is there a chance to test application for the mobile devices?
- Just to be sure there will be an app for android/iOS?
- Could we also get a client for windows? (MacOS/Linux not to forget them)
- Will the application also have a stop watch / count down (1/10 1/100 seconds) which could be displayed on the NixC?
- Will an alarm be included (flashing LEDs in set colour, or sound via speaker - if what kind of sound: beeping, ring tones, mp3 playback)? I guess that's it for now. Again great idea :] Harald

@ChrisP NixC is powered with included power supply.

@Kelvin Chong Nixie tubes have an approximate lifetime of 100,000 hours what is over 11 years. Additionally, I designed software in order to extend even more the lifetime of the lamps. I have already worked out a way to add an ambient light sensor.

How is the clock powered? You don't mention it in the description (or I missed it) and there are no visible cables on the images.

Would you take add-on, for bulbs, orders during this campaign? Yes, previous comment about light sensor to switch low and timer function to switch to standby would be great.
Olek
Review from Kickstarter
@Michael Davis Yes, It is powered by an included power supply. You can control with a phone or switch in the clock when the backlight and tubes are off. I am considering ambient light sensor as well.

@Kelvin they should be available in an online store I am currently building.

I assume it uses a plug-in transformer and can work in the US. Will it have an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness automatically? I would actually like to turn the display off when my office is dark because it means I am not there.
