Aquarius Water Manipulating Fountain Lamp

Editor's Rating
4.9?
Discovered on 2017-11-13

Creating a relaxing ambience in your home with the Aquarius Water Manipulating Fountain Lamp. This inspiring lamp combines flowing streams of water with visually mesmerizing effects. Aquarius has a constant flow of water that can bend, change colors, and even freeze in place. Incredibly, it can even defy gravity and flow upwards and divide into multiple streams. You have the ability to switch between patterns including a helix, the Northern Lights, and more. In addition, the open source design allows you to add new designs. The Aquarius Lamp is as mesmerizing as it is relaxing. Encasing the fountain is a teardrop shape silhouette made from Baltic Birch plywood. This natural material is the perfect compliment to brilliant light and water show.

@ Gaurav, I'll have to get their permissions first before I can do that since they might want to keep it private. In the next few weeks I'll be posting up some new creations however and some will be based off of the commissioned patterns (not exactly the same but with some variations).

Forgot to mention that I got mine 1 month ago. Well, I love it, my kids love it, even my wife like it, and believe me that is something! I loved everything on this campaign which gives the crowdfunding industry a sense. Again, kudos to the creator who did IMHO the best campaign I ever backed.

Hi, I can't figure out how to send you a private message. My Aquarius worked beautifully for the first day (yesterday), but when I tried to turn it on today - nothing. No lights or water. The water is filled to 75%, and the blue light on the plug is on. Also the white plastic at the bottom of the funnel unfortunately arrived broken. I'm not sure what else to try. Thanks.

@ Andres, I will send you a message and we can debug further. I suspect it's a PCB issue and not a pump issue.

Hello, I think I might have a defective pump. It was initially working but now I have to unplug the lamp and sometimes drain the water to get it working and even then it will work for a minute or so before the water stops flowing. Any tips or ideas to remedy this? Thanks

@ Everyone, a reminder for international backers that received a tracking number, if the status indicates that your package is held in customs, let me know so I can send you an invoice. The invoice may be required for them to calculate duties and release the package to you (even though the box has cost labels attached to it, some customs agents still want to see an official invoice).

@ Everyone, just a note for everyone that USPS is closed today due to Memorial Day in the United States if anyone is wondering why their tracking status isn't updating.

This thing is awesome! Sure I had some hiccups while setting it up and the woodwork could have been a bit better (although it is nice), this thing is a piece of art. From my 2 year old son to every person in my home looks at this with the same excitement. And also worth mentioning is how well this campaign was run, timelines were met, regular updates were provided and after sales service was top notch. Wish you more luck with the future products. My only complain is that I cant place it anywhere in my home away my 2 year old's destroying instincts for things that interests him :D

Hey everyone, Finally got my Aquarius through ParcelForce and a few bugs that couldn’t be helped. Not even close to the most expensive import I’ve had to deal with and Stephen has been a delight. You’ll find a few words of praise for this project and campaign plus a little video I made quickly this morning at the following link: https://facebook.com/graysonkingofficial/ I usually share Photos links but I’ve decided I shall probably start ranting less on KS and more on my actual page haha 😂 It’s been a wonderful campaign honestly, I sincerely hope I can afford and be informed of upcoming projects ;) You friendly neighbourhood superbacker, Grayson King

@ Everyone, just a few tips regarding staining/coloring/finishing the uncolored fountains. - You'll notice that there is a small seam/gap between the upper frame and the base. The finished fountains normally have a wood filler that closely matches the color of the stain I use. The uncolored ones have the seam/gap because I'm not sure exactly which color that folks will apply so I've left it up to them to pick the matching filler. I personally use Elmer's which has several different colors for matching which you can find here:
http://www.elmers.com/product/detail/E868 - For staining, I recommend to use a foam brush. You generally want to apply the stain to one side and immediately wipe it off with a rag. Leaving it on for too long will deepen the color but also hide the wood grain. If you were going to do that, you might as well use a paint instead of a stain. - You only need 1 layer of stain generally (both oil and water). Same with paint. Same with wood dye. - Wood finishing is a bit more complicated. I personally use a wipe-on polyurethane with 5-7 layers to get a glossy smooth finish but there are so many different ways of finishing that simply can't be covered in a comment like this. I would avoid spray-on finishes since there are parts that the spray might accidentally hit through crevices. - You'll want to remove the funnel, tape off the front dial, tape off the LED strips, and tape off the PCB connectors. You don't have to tape off the white funnel adapter if you intend to color/finish that too but definitely cover up the hole so no finish/coloring drips inside. You'll also want to remove the back panel and color/finish that one separately. - You don't have to color it. If you like the natural birch color, you can simply just finish it instead. Remember that most polyurethanes have an "ambering" effect after it fully cures so expect a small tint of orange/yellow in a few days/weeks. - Lastly, it takes alot of patience and waiting but it's totally worth it to get the final look you want!

No worries, I was just curious. I see that mine has shipped, I'm eager to get it (and put my own finish on it). :)

@ Scott, good question and it's all down to manufacturing efficiency. It's mainly about the color curing times, quantity, and storage space. If I leave all the colored versions as the last batch, then the last few backers would end up receiving their fountains up to a week later due to the curing times. Whereas, if I pipeline it such that I can have a few fountains curing while working on uncolored fountains, then by the time the latter are done, the former will also be done. I have a limited space available to store the fountains while they cure so this means if I have a bunch of fountains curing, they effectively block out production of other ones. So then, since the uncolored ones and Dark Walnuts have the highest quantity, I decided it would be most efficient to produce these 2 in tandem (make a few Dark Walnuts and let them cure while using the remaining space to make the uncolored ones). The uncolored ones also need curing, not color, but for gluing. In theory, I could have done the same with the other colors (produce a few of them along with the uncolored ones), but it would have been too messy and wasteful since I would end up switching colors frequently (can't reuse tools like brushes/rags/containers/mats for each color). It's probably not the most effective strategy since manufacturing is all new to me and definitely still a learning exercise.

This isn't a complaint, but something I've been wondering about for a while. You talked about the length of time for the different finishes and when you were shipping them out . . . which makes total sense. What I don't understand is why the unfinished ones didn't go out yet (or go out first). Wouldn't those have been the quickest/easiest to send out? They are literally already done before you even start on the finished ones.

I've been getting some questions as to what setting affects the "width" of the side-to-side motion of the stream. In the source code, look for this setting: static uint8_t mag_duty = 70; That value of "70" is the default and gives a reasonable side-to-side distance. Without getting into the nitty-gritty details behind what that setting actually does, you can simply increase or decrease that value by increments of 10 and then upload the code to Aquarius to see the difference. In general, you want to increment by 10, upload and see if you like the result. If you don't, increment by 10 and re-upload again. Once you're satisfied with the results, you can stop. However, if you see the stream getting very close to the edge of left/right sides of the funnel, don't increment anymore as it may shoot out of the funnel. There are some implications as well when increasing the distance. Splash noise will actually be reduced as the distance increases but there may be more "micro" splashes (generally negligible but I should mention it anyways). While the default value of 70 is reasonable as I mentioned above, it doesn't give the maximum distance and I chose that simply because it's a "safe" value. 80 is most likely the "best" value to use but since there are small differences between each lamp, that number could be off by 10 or so.

I found a temporary compromise on me not getting a Sisyphus that might amuse you (it’s a bit of a downgrade but very affordable) called Sandscript. With a few mods it might elevate slightly - I wonder if I could swap out the sand for different options for colour and style for example, or add a lid and have (effectively) a very small version of Sisyphus haha At $49.99 it’s worth a shout hey? Haha 😂 https://www.thinkgeek.com/product/jisj/ #howtoavoidfeelingleftout

Awww the Sisyphus’ cheapest table is running at $1299 (which tbf considering the obvious quality etc is very fair) haha 😂 It was $645 as an early bird hahaha I can’t even imagine what the delivery and import on that bad boy would be though haha (ō¯¯ō;) Lesson hard learned... it’ll be some time before I get myself one then I guess, if ever hahha I wonder if I could sort of borrow the concept slightly with a Raspberry Pi... I’ll contact them and ask how they think/feel about this... they might be happy to help me try 😂 ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Sisyphus is a gorgeous and perfectly complimentary purchase to Aquarius!! I was gonna do the same haha 😂 But, cost... so count me as jelly hahaha ——— In the U.K. I had a bit of kerfuffle with import and being told they had tried to deliver it but it was actually getting put through customs. Finally got a letter from ParcelForce with their fees: Customs Duty £0
Excise Duty £0
Import VAT £7.65
Other £0
Clearance fee (zero rated for VAT) £11.25
Total £18.90 The thing is, I’ve had ‘admin charges’ of a similar amount from FedEx in the past and I emailed them to challenge it and they’ve removed it each time for me. I found a letter template online on somebody’s blog and used that (happy to provide this) so it’s possible I’ll be able to get rid of the £11.25 but it depends as I’ve only done that with FedEx previously. I personally think they can’t justify a blanket charge like this and their reasons in the letter explaining it are somewhat vague. I think it’s a bit like they know you won’t challenge it and paying it is accepting that it was justified so tough once you pay. It’s cheeky is my point, but I need to phone them up and discuss it and see about having it removed. Just thought you’d all like a heads up on this and I’ll update here if I’m successful as being a superbacker I deal with more import bs charges than most hahaha 😂 I’m happy to pay VAT, but I’m reasonably sure that extra charge is something we don’t have to deal with. On FedEx it comes up as an ‘admin charge’ or similar. Your friendly neighbourhood superbacker, Grayson King

There has been at least 1 report of a user who had a cracked funnel adapter (that is the white piece where the funnel fits in). In such a scenario, I can send a replacement adapter but there may be a bit of work involved in removing the existing adapter since it is partially glued on. I'm still analyzing the reason why a crack could happen and don't have conclusions yet. Some theories are: 1. Box packaging thrown around during shipping.
2. Moisture absorption through splashing (this is particularly more true for the uncolored/unfinished fountains since they have no water proofing). The absorption can cause wood expansion potentially "crushing" the adapter in the process.
3. Moisture absorption through environmental climate. In humid environments, its possible that the wood can absorb moisture through the air causing expansion leading to the same result in (2) above.
4. Stressing the funnel against the adapter. Though its most likely the funnel would break first if a user tried to stress it by bending it back and forth against the adapter. A replacement adapter will be shipped out in these cases and will also be "slightly" smaller than the existing one to account for possible wood expansion.

For folks that intend to modify the code for custom effects, please send me your Github user ID and I will add you to the source code repository. I will be updating the information page there in the next few days to help 1st-timers. If you already have Arduino programming experience, it should be straightforward :) If you have tried to record video of your Aquarius in action, you may have noticed how difficult it is to really capture what you see clearly. While I don't have any expert suggestions (as my campaign video also shows those recording artifacts), I can say that your aperture, frame rate, and ISO settings really need to be tweaked to get an OK recording. The variable strobe frequency makes straight recording with static settings practically impossible and even studio level cameras such as the one used on Discovery Channel failed as well. Lastly, some of the uncolored fountains will go out this week and I'd like to remind those recipients to take care when running it prior to coloring/finishing it. Baltic Birch plywood, in general, can resist moisture better than traditional woods but it will still absorb nonetheless. So if you intend to turn it on prior to water-proofing/finishing, I would keep a rag handy to wipe away any droplets.

Manuals in the EU: I was never asked for a manual at the customs office declaring kickstarter projects but always the looked for the CE-sign. Nevermind Englisch is official EU-languange and a short downloadable manual in Englisch (with declaration of conformity) would be enough to meet the requrements. No translation neccessary.
