I am based in the UK and I got my bottle before Christmas with the engraving exactly how I wanted it. There was no smell from my bottle, maybe I got lucky on that one. I got the charcoal too, washed it and it sits happily inside with no issue. My experience with the bottle has been rather dull compared to the other comments. It sits on my desk at work, it sits by my side at the gym and I even tried it with some tea when I went up Snowdon over the Christmas break. Now, I will say it is a shame the design I backed didn't come to fruition. I go hiking and camping a lot, and I mean a lot. The original design looked like an interesting addition to my kit. I never expected this to replace some of my high end kit, but just an interesting extra. Personally, I believe it is naive to say to that as a backer or "investor" you are entitled to a product or a say in the product all the time. Every investment has a risk, that is the nature of investing. It is also why financial advisors often say you should only invest money you can afford to lose. You pledge money hoping it will succeed and offer a return, you don't pledge money thinking you just bought a product. If that is the case, go to the shop and getting something similar or wait till the item has appeared in a shop. To me, the big issues people have highlighted are more likely the results of different problems. The length of time taken to get to an endpoint was more likely due to inexperience, and the product development not been as far along as they thought. The change of design and smell, more likely because they miscalculated how much money they needed to bring the original design to life compared to how much they were using for charity projects. In a bid to salvage the project, the direction changed to something significantly cheaper so the bottle could be sent out to the backers. Blinded by this, they probably overlooked that they lost the USP of the bottle. I think Welly would have experienced a steep learning curve on this. I just hope they go back to the original design and see it through, take a slightly more conservative approach to the finance and remember the design must reflect who they are.

Hi Ben, Thanks for your comprehensive comment and also for refunding me. Just to clarify and I might also sound defensive here, but admittedly carry a fair amount of frustration in general about kickstarter and stopped backing projects altogether. Too many of them either failed, turned out to be useless, two of them even revealed themselves as complete scams, or continue to suffer from really bad communication and update mentality of the creators - and I am not saying that either of this happened here, I just came to a point where I got really sick of having to keep on asking and commenting and reposting to find out about a project’s status. I thoroughly believe this is the responsibility of a creator, and sorry to say that, but I did not feel that well updated in this project as I would have liked to be (although far better than in some others I backed). While I was not happy with the design changes, I went along with them, and did that knowing that a) you offered refunds to people not liking the new design and b) very much so because I liked your whole concept and thought, well, I might not like the change of design but I am still willing to support a great idea. What really frustrated me was the very long wait even after the design changes. As far as I remember, the design changes were announced mid 2016, so that was almost 1.5 years ago. The issue with the smell came up in early summer 2017 and I remember that what finally triggered me to comment here was your update from sometime in late autumn that only US backers would probably get their rewards before Christmas, not even mentioning the non-US backers and how much longer we would have to wait. I commented on that in mid November and you just told me again that you are working hard to fulfil orders to US backers. By just klicking on my name you can easily see that I am not a US Backer. Beginning of December I voiced my frustration about your info that non-US backers would receive the bottles not before the beginning of 2018. That comment obviously made you send my bottles earlier, without any message or indication that you would, no tracking number, nothing. Suddenly they arrived here very fast. When I discovered the bad smell and considering the sudden speed of my shipment, I had to think that they were from the first round of production. Anyway, if this is not the case I apologise, but even so, my bottles SMELL. And as mentioned, my 15 year old daughter who was supposed to get the second bottle I ordered, and who did not have any knowledge about this project let alone about the issue with the smell, opened the box and immediately gave it back to me saying she would never use something smelling that bad and chemical (not to repeat what she actually said). And smell they do. Unfortunately the bad small cannot be proven by a photo and cannot be sent via the internet so I have no prove but just my statement. This statement might have surprised you, but I cannot change the fact. So thanks again for refunding me, but please do not make it sound like I just used the smell to get a refund. I mentioned that the design was an issue but one I accepted a long time ago when not asking for a refund all those months back. It is the continuing smell that bothers me and unfortunately keeps me from using the bottles!

While we have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback about the final product, I value all concerns and feedback which is why I have addressed each of your concerns below: I also apologize if I sound defensive as I have put my heart and soul over the past 2 years to provide an innovative, well-designed bottle that also makes a significant impact on communities without access to clean water. I feel we have done this together and I was literally pained when I received your comments. Barbara: You state two issues in your last comment - 'the smell and the design'.
- I was both surprised and sorry to hear your feedback about the smell. Since shipping out over 1,000 of our upgraded bottles, you are the first person to tell us you still experienced a smell. Because of this issue, I will be refunding your purchase. As mentioned - please email me separately with a Paypal account to send the money.

To eliminate the smell issue from our first production run, we made significant structural changes to the bottle, and specifically to the bottom pad, which was assembled with an adhesive. To fix this, we changed the design so that the bottom pad no longer needed an adhesive, and could instead be popped into place.

- Regarding your mention about complaints about the design, we had offered a full refund to anyone who was unhappy with the new design of the bottle.

Mark: You mention a few complaints including not liking the design, not having input in the design changes as an 'investor', wanting regular updates detailing what's happening, even if it's bad news, the bottle not being dishwasher safe, the bottle not being different from HydroFlask, not catching the previous bottle's smell earlier and a disintegrating chunk of wood.

All are addressed below:

1. Not liking the design – As mentioned above, the moment I realized we could not manufacture our original bottle design, I gave all backers the options to either a) get a full refund or b) receive our new bottle design. Even after receiving detailed drawings/renderings of the new design you chose to still receive the new bottle design.

2. Not having input in the design changes as an 'investor' - As a creator, sometimes you have to make decisions without the input of every backer. After researching and using countless water bottles and asking detailed questions to a knowledgeable focus group of over 50 people about their drinking preferences, my engineering and design team developed the new design with some key upgrades including insulation, less plastic, a wide-mouth for easy cleaning, a greater bamboo surface area and a removable infuser.

Separately, I am so incredibly grateful for all of the Kickstarter backers as they helped bring this project to life. With that said, Kickstarter backers are ‘backers’ who, in return for their pledge and payment, get access to the ins and outs of bringing a product to life, while also receiving the product before anyone else does and at a significant discount. This is very different from an investor, who invests in a company in exchange for equity and sometimes a say in the direction / overall strategy of the company. I feel that I was always up front and open about our progress and the many problems we faced in creating our bottle. I was transparent with 35 Kickstarter updates throughout the process. I previously said, we even offered a full refund to anyone who was not happy with the new direction.

3. The bottle not being dishwasher safe - As you said, you never expected the bottle to be dishwasher safe when you first backed the campaign. Additionally, all top quality insulated bottles (such as HydroFlask and S'well) are also not dishwasher safe. This was well known from the very beginning so I am not sure why you are now upset about it.

4. The bottle not being different from HydroFlask - While there are a few main differences between Welly and HydroFlask, I take this complaint as a compliment as HydroFlask is a great water bottle company that hundreds of thousands of people enjoy. However, Welly is mainly different in its design as we include bamboo, a natural renewable resource that stands out, and we offer a removable infuser which allows you to brew coffee/tea or naturally flavor your water with fruit. Additionally, we aim to connect and be transparent with our customers about where are charitable donations go and the impact they make. These differences are why I feel Welly stands out compared to other bottles like HydroFlask.

5. Not catching the previous bottle's smell earlier - As you said, "Setting up and running a company is a learning experience after all". You don't know what you don't know, and I had no idea that an FDA-approved adhesive, which I was told does not smell (and is used with other bottles) would smell. We learned, grew and adjusted at great time, effort and expense (beyond Kickstarter proceeds) to address this issue.

6. A disintegrating chunk of wood - We are always trying to get better and are not perfect. Please email me pictures to detailing what you mean by this so we can address the issue going forward. Lastly, you mention backing projects because you want to support the vision of the creator and you are not just backing for a product. While part of my vision was to provide a great water bottle, my real vision was connected to the passing of my Mom and all the things I learned from her while she was alive. Because of her I wanted to give back and do something beyond just selling a product. Because of all of your pledges we have been able to support the drilling of a well in a village in Northern Ethiopia called Mai Welay, where 350 people who previously did not have access to clean water now do. I know you are not thrilled with the bottle you received and I am very sorry to hear this. However, I am encouraged by the many backers who have truly enjoyed their new Welly Bottles and have purchased additional bottles for friends/family. Could not agree more, Mark Thompson! Any thermos flask bought without years of waiting and for half the money could do the job. At least your bottle does not smell, mine still do and that after airing them for three weeks!

And Ben, I do not agree that it is difficult to deal with individual customer issues here on the comment section. As far as I can tell there are no "individual issues" but two general ones: the smell and the design. So this here should be the perfect place to discuss our concerns. The more so as long as there is a "pre-oder here" button the the page. Potential buyers should have the chance to see what is voiced here.

Well, I just received my Welly bottle. The good news - it doesn't smell, and you delivered a final product. Congratulations. The bad news? It's as boring as everything else on the market. Now, I totally get that you decided to change the direction of your product design - that's fine, it's a decision that every company is faced with at some point during product design; and I get that it was a unilateral decision you made, with any "real" input from your investors. Oh... wait... "investors". Yes - that's what we are, and like so many other Kickstarter projects you completely ignored that fact. I'm a "super backer". I don't back projects necessarily to get a "product" or "service", I back them because a project calls to me, and I want to support the person or people who had a vision. In return I expect respect, regular updates detailing what's happening, even if it's bad news, and a level of interaction that is commensurate with the fact that you wouldn't be able to do any of this without investment. I'm not Andreessen Horowitz or any other big VC, but I'm willing to bet if I were you wouldn't make decisions that effect your final product so completely. So... what we have here is a product that really doesn't have any true USP. It can't go in a dishwasher because of the wood you've used. That was fine with the original idea because the overall design was different enough, but honestly, you've created a product that's no better than a Hydroflask, or any number of other manufacturers, and worse, your quality control is really, truly, awful. The problems others have had with smells from the product should have been caught MUCH earlier, and the disintegrating chunk of wood that you've sent me really compounds the lack of QC you've shown. I wish you well as a company. I really hope you've learned a LOT from this experience and you can use that in the future. Setting up and running a company is a learning experience after all. The product you sent me? It's going in to the large box in my garage for re-gifting at White Elephant or Secret Santa events, at least until I clear the box out and give it's contents to Goodwill. It's not going in to daily circulation because, well... it's just not the right product for me anymore. Best of luck for the future!
Two years ago we all paid into this campaign for a cool looking canteen that filtered your water more efficiently and effectively on the go. It was different and functional, which is why it passed 100% funding. But here we are 2+ years later. A year into design and development, the owner decided to switch directions completely for his own company gains (which is annoying but understandable). The direction however was so drastically changed, it resembled hardly anything like the original. I went along with it because, well it was only $35 I spent on a project that would ultimately give water back to those in need so, why not. Fast forward another year. Finally, after many more hiccups and project updates, I get my Welly Bottle and separate filter in the mail. Wow it's so fancy looking, but again the usability is as boring as every other bottle I can get and it's basically a canteen that "CAN" filter water if you want. 5 minutes after washing the bamboo filter like their website told me, it started to crack into a million pieces. Now, either it's faulty or I washed it incorrectly. Their website does not go into detail about exactly how to care for your Bottle and filter. Just says "clean it thoroughly". What does that even mean? Anyway... I emailed support and was notified they are no longer selling the filter because many others are reporting the same. So you tell me if this product resembles even 10% of the original. Because now I just have a thermos. I can't even filter water now!!!! Seems like this project has turned into funding their company startup instead of the actually product we all backed. I'm extremely disappointed as a Kickstarter backer that this "bottle" can no longer filter water. At least I can use it for my tea or coffee now.. thanks. *insert sarcastic spongebob meme*

So I did finally receive my two bottles, but the very unhealthy smell (actually it is a real chemical stink) coming from the bottom of the bottles makes me strongly believe you did send two pieces of your faulty patches to me (the very ones you said you would be happy to replace!). To be honest, I feel even more frustrated now than when I wrote my last comments. Did I get those faulty bottles because I openly voiced my opinion? Because I decided to stick to the campaign despite not at all liking the design changes? In any case, I do not want those bottles you sent, they small like a health hazard and my 14 year old daughter who was supposed to get one of them, said they smell like giving you "nose cancer"! No way she would use it. Neither will I. I am waiting to hear from you, what you offer as a fair and serious solution to this very frustrating campaign out come for me. Either refund my pledge or finally deliver a product which I feel save to use, not some of your rejects that you offered other backers to replace!

My comment is essentially the same as Barbara's. Initially, I supported the campaign due to the uniqueness of the design. But when you changed the design, I stuck on, willing to give it a try. However, the campaign ended at the end of December 2015. At this point, we supporters have waited patiently through all the project setbacks and delays for close to 2 years now... And from the looks of your previous reply to Barbara, it looks like I might not even be getting my shipment this year as you only mentioned getting the bottles to the US backers before Christmas and I do not live in the US. I have to say this is extremely frustrating and disappointing.

I have to admit I am getting more and more frustrated. Initially I supported your campaign because I liked your approach and also liked your different shape. I am actually not happy with all those bottles that are cylinder shaped and always seem to bulky to store them on the go. I decided to stay in the campaign after the substantive design change, willing to give it a try. And now I am still waiting and waiting and waiting, as are all the other supporters here. The last message from you was in September. Personally I think that our patience alone makes you owe us timely updates. So, kindly let us all know what is happening. Preferable here, so that every single backer who is still interested can read your updates.

Hi Herb, We are not planning to sell filters to wholesalers/retailers just yet so it's not included there. Your order will still come with our activated bamboo charcoal filter. As for waiting to source materials - I was waiting to make sure that our suppliers (particularly bamboo) could provide quality materials which we could only test with our molds. I could have started sourcing bamboo earlier but we have had to change our bamboo supplier in the past and I didn't want to risk sourcing with one in advance of receiving samples and then having to change. This would have been very costly. While this is a main cause for the current delays, I wanted to make sure we had a quality bottle first. Best, Ben

Hi Kristin, I am so sorry to hear about your issues with our initial shipment. As stated in an earlier update, there was an adhesive used in the cap that dried up, but it should not be able to have any contact with the inside of your bottle. Regardless, please stop using that bottle immediately whether or not the Welly Bottle is to blame. We have been sending out updates to backers on both Kickstarter and through direct email letting everyone know that our first production run had many defective bottles and we also offered free replacement bottles to anyone who asked. We will happily send you replacement bottles when our next shipment arrives (update to come), just please send us a direct email with your shipping address if it has changed. Again, I am so sorry for the issues you've experienced. We are no longer using any adhesives in our caps or for our bottom pad so you will not experience any of these issues again. I'm very disappointed to find out the adhesive in the lid of my Welly got down into the inside of it. I've been drinking water out of it for weeks with toxic adhesive stuck to the inside! I've been having weird issues with my guts and even passed a bunch of blood in my stool one day and I'm now thinking drinking out of my Welly was to blame. Thanks a lot!!

Just received my (2) Welly bottles and was super excited to use one and gift the other. Unfortunately, when I opened them I got a big whiff of what smells like CONTACT CEMENT! Since the activated carbon was stored in the bottle during shipment, it wreaks of contact cement too.. Makes sense that the carbon would absorb the odors, but what I'm wondering is how where the smell originates from?? the instruction sheet doesn't smell like chemical glue? Is it the glue they used to attached the bamboo to the steel inner layer? Is the steel water tight? Is it the white liner in the top? Just thinking aloud here.. Either way I'm not feeling very environmentally friendly at this point.
