XTND – Electric Board with Artificial Intelligence

Editor's Rating
4.8?
Discovered on 2017-06-16

Introducing the XTND Electric AI Board. This personal vehicle is lightweight, thin, and easy to ride. However, what really sets it apart is the ground-breaking AI technology inside. The XTND Board learns about you over time. It understands the way you ride and produces settings to adapt to you. The more you use it, the more it learns. The XTND Board improves its efficiency and performance with every ride, such as learning your regular routes. In fact, it can even offer alternative routes if traffic is a bit sticky. The top of the XNTD Board is filled with built-in pressure sensors. The board uses your steps to know if and when you stand on it. Of course, the metrics are also important. The XTND Board can take you 12.5 miles on a single charge and reach speeds of 25mph. Taking just an hour to charge, the board weighs only 6.6 lbs.

@XTND: maybe you can re-consider USB-C connector once you're tweaking design. I can easily imagine situation that I have power full device with huge battery storage under my feet and totally discharged phone. It would make me really happy, if I can charge my phone and call my girlfriend (or mother .-) ) that I'm coming late for dinner... you could safe relationships even better lives in case of accidents by that feature ! Also software updates or some data transfer it can be used for.

@Allan, those are very good questions, we'll go into more detail in the updates to cover them and a few more, but since the matter of design versus batteries has been brought up before, a simplified answer until the updates are out is that the batteries are important for the design given their own size that has to fit inside. The batteries will be swappable and we'll try to keep the board's design as close as possible to the original one, but there will have to be a few adjustments.

@PeteRepeat, that's also a good question and yes, the app will have that feature.

Hey XTND, just wondering, will the app also show how many kilometers I drove in total...from start on?
Would be a cool feature, so I could know just like it is with a car, when to do the next maintencance. Greets.

Review from Kickstarter
January is that the final setback? How hard is it to keep the previous design just because the battery technology has changed? Does it still got the same features and same materials being used as the one on original campaign? Is the battery still be swapable? These are the questions I’m hoping to see on the next update!

Hello everyone, just briefly letting you know that we're hearing you and we're redoing the design. There will have to be an adjustment to the original one to some extent given the change of batteries, but we'll sort it out and get back to you with the result. And, many thanks for the feedback, we really appreciate it!

Longer board for sure! I prefer this design, expecially the top/back lights.
Anyway the delay is a big problem, I think I will wait, again, but i'm not sure. Instead I'm fully sure that another delay will cause the start to contact all users and Kickstarter to process a mass refund request and/or start class action. This is guaranteed.

Since we all backed a longboard I think you have to stick with that and make the design as close to the original as possible. The long delay sucks but if that is what it takes to bring us a quality board then I can live with it. In your next update please bring us some specs and close-up photos of the board.

Lou board shape is very nice, do a similar design^^

I would actually prefer the smaller design. As it will be mainly an urban transport method a small turning radius imo would make the board much more manoeuvrable and safe in crowded streets and on small crubs etc. Kicktail would be a nice addition too.

The smaller design looks horrible and too normal. I would consider the longer design because it reminds of the original design which is what I inadvertently based my decision on. Can we get an updated spec on the two new designs you are testing with a comparison to the original design?

I think all the backers should be in some degree accept the original design as they all decided to back this project by knowing the original design. But now after changing the design, some backers including me clearly stated that they love the original design more and may ask for refund if you finally change the design, it is surely not to do that.
For those who love the original design and decided to back the project, changing the appearance of the product is arguably unfair to them as you are going give them something they didn't expect and like.

New long version seems a lot more stable and is closer from the original design.
I’ll would definitly Stick with something close to the original advertisement .
Otherwise it’s gonna be like the acton quatre issue , when they redesigned it , and lost a lot of backers !!

I do not like the new long shape, you keep the old shape or the short shape with a kick tail, otherwise I want to recover my money, you have a little ripped off I feel. Sorry this is a google traduction

I like the new design of the longer board. Especially the thinner light strips. Looks less toy-ish than the prototype. It seems the whole board is a bit thicker though, can you write us the new dimensions please?

The new looks of the board are awful...
I do like the original design, please don't give up your uniqueness. By the way, didn't you mention you would take some videos to demonstrate the performance of the motor or how the riding will look like? Videos are way better and easier than words for backers to know about your new progress.

I know things can be hectic, but updates every 2 weeks is really not to much to ask for IMO. It does not need to be much, just small portions. How will the AI work, will it be some kind of hosting by your servers for it to work (this is really a shitty solution if you ask me, just look at the pebble problem).

Hey there, Jan, we really appreciate your question, we’re also from Europe so we absolutely get what you’re saying. It’s difficult to say exactly because we never measured it, but we’ve never had a problem with it when we test the boards, though it’s true it depends on the length of the board as well as riding skills.

hey XTND team! i've got a question coming up to my mind, but I do not know, if it's still answered, cause I didn't have time to read all of the comments here the last few months, so i just follow your news every now and then.
my question is about the radius, by driving the board. is it big? it just came up to my mind, because a have the backfire galaxy here and just reconized, that the steering angle is very small, but it's the maximum I can get. I was just wondering, if this is a phenomenon of longboards/e-longboards because of the hub motors. In germany (or europe in generell) you don't have that much bis streets and wide angles and every now and then i need to turn around a small 90° angle, which is not possibly for me right now. but most of the time it's not necessary while driving on the streets.
thanks for answering :)

Hello guys, apologies for the slow response rate, Dominika's been on sick leave. We've been thoroughly testing new motors' performance both in the lab and in the streets, and it's looking good, but we'll give you a more conclusive report on that next week as well as a few other things we've been focusing on (sensors, for instance). Hope you're all doing great in the meantime and speak to you soon!

Great news about the battery at 200 Wh, thanks for beeing on top with battery improvement. Since your campaign ended a lot has going on with the competion like Boosted Board launching their extended battery at 199Wh and they don´t come cheap either at 399$. Perhaps you can increase your small and intermediate battery as well to let say 99Wh(airfriendly) and 159Wh(possibly airfriendly). Keep up the good work.

Hello guys, hope you all had a nice weekend as well as the first day of May and thanks for the kind words! We really appreciate it. @spence, We have good news for you then! We absolutely agree with you and the new board design will in fact be a bit wider. @Sameet, thank you for sharing your experience and suggestions with us! As for changing the wheels, we’re aspiring to make it as simple and quick as possible. It’s seriously only a matter of seconds. Unfortunately, making a universal truck that would be compatible with pneumatic tires is not really possible because the wheel dimensions influence the width of the truck. Nevertheless, we do take into account that a lot of our backers will be riding on poor terrain, which is why we started making a terrain version of the wheels that are similar to the longboard ones, but have a softer polyurethane mixture and a pattern. For now, we’re not really debating bigger pneumatic tires similar to those that Evolve uses, but in any case, thank you for your suggestions as well as support. We hope you’ll be satisfied with your XTND Board. @Magnus, thank you for the suggestions, we really appreciate it, but we’ll be sticking to our solution. Both ways have pros and cons, but in any case, it would be a drastic change that’s not possible at this point. But as for the capacity and Wh of the batteries, we’ve got good news! The large battery pack will have a bigger capacity than the original and with approximately 200 Wh. As for the range, it’s difficult to say at this point what it will precisely be because it depends on optimizing the motor efficiency and a few more factors. Nevertheless, we estimate the board will have better range than we planned. We will confirm and get back to this as well as the batteries in the future updates. Thanks again for your suggestions!

@XTND, In your next update could you talk a little about what battery you are aiming for? My thoughts are that if you go for the 18650 style please use something like the Samsung 30Q cell with a capacity of 3000mAh and a max discharge rate at 15A. Only 12 of these would give an output of 133Wh and you can buy them in Europe at https://eu.nkon.nl/ for about 50$. Your pricing on the campaign site is 299/349$ for the same output which is way too much. I know the enclosure, spotwelding and putting it all together adds to the cost but still. If you want to keep the pricing could you at least try to squeeze in a few extra cells and reach 200 Wh for the price? A more interresting battery would be the Sanyo 20700B cell which is available as optional battery for Meepo board customers at about 300$. This is a 295 Wh battery and the cells are designed to handle 3000 discharges which gives it great value for money. Since your board is a premium board and the batteries are so important I hope you can put together an update and give us an insight what you are aiming for, please.

@Sameet, I agree with you about the drive gear would be a better solution rather than the current hub motors. To my knowledge only Jedboard and Carvon use them and it would be sweet to see @XTND use them too but I fear it takes pretty long time to develop and it would delay our boards even further, it might be worth the wait though. Since the deck is redesigned to fit the other battery type it would also be nice if @XTND could increase the Wh of the batteries, I´m thinking 200 Wh in their biggest battery like I have in my Flex Eboard. Interesting to hear you upgraded your front truck on your Flex-E to the sidewinder 2. I like the carving already but I haven´t tried an Evolve so I can´t compare but if you think it is worth it I might do the upgrade too. Did you get the 9" or the 10" truck?

Review from Kickstarter
So I have purchased 3 boards and given them all a good amount of shred sessions, and also commuted with them around town. Please, take into account that I live in Florida and the majority of our roads are flat. The three boards that I purchased were the EVOLVE Carbon GT $2k, Flex E-board bamboo $800+ and what appears to be the Meepo Board $400. The evolve is by far the best, however considering the price it should be. The only plus I really found with the flex and evolve was the ability to change the wheels. I wish instead of the inhub wheel it just went directly into a drive gear which would be able to house a variety if different wheels. The Meepo type of board feels the best after accelerating. There is no drag what so ever with the Meepo in-hub motor and sometimes feels like it gets even faster once you let go off, which I know sounds mad. However, I did have to change out just the front truck on both the Meepo and Flex E board. I switched the front trucks to the gullwing sidewinder 2 trucks and the boards became very evenly matched with the turning capability of the Evolve. Like I mentioned earlier, even if you guys could sell a drive gear that would replace the polyurethane wheel, that way we would have the ability to change the wheels to pneumatic ones, which is for sure the way to go for customers that live in places that have poor roads. That being said I am super excited for how much better this board is going to be in comparison to the Meepo board I have, especially since it will retail for $1k more than what I paid for the Meepo. If you guys have not had the chance of riding both a belt driven and in hub, you have for sure made the right choice in funding this project.

...from my experience wider board tends to have issues on maneuverability. But if you are riding 22km up, i don’t feel that you would want to dance with your board. And given that your board is quite high on ground clearance, making it wide will compensate on the swerving motion while riding (just thinking out loud). =)

Review from Kickstarter
I forgot to mention again...the fact that you are redesigning the board due to the size of the battery, may i suggest to make it wider a bit? Coz i tried long and short electric board and there’s really a big difference in terms of safety (wobbling) especially in high speed (Thats why i prefer longer and wider boards). =)
