GAMEBOOK Interactive Book of Board Games

Editor's Rating
4.7?
Discovered on 2018-06-04

Introducing GAMEBOOK, the interactive book of board games. Unlike any you’ve ever seen, this book features a collection of ancient abstract games. They include Surakarta, Mu Torere, Senet, Nine Men’s Morris, and more. If you’ve never heard of these games before, don’t worry. GAMEBOOK also comes with a delightful history of board games along with rules for each one. In addition, the design of the book itself is something to marvel. Complete with figures, sticks, and dice, GAMEBOOK has everything you need to start playing any of these games. The book features basic geometric forms and a limited color range, giving GAMEBOOK a modern design. The spine and pages are actually magnetic so you can take out the games you want to play. However, the magnets are strong enough to keep the pages right where you need them. Likewise, each game inside looks like its own work of art.

@robjeffery We understand what you mean, but the book has a lot of custom made pieces and requires hand crafted work. During the manufacturing process of this edition we will see if some parts of the book can be optimised, but without effecting the quality of the product. :)

I think for the 2nd edition you should work on reducing the manufacturing costs as only 21 people have backed this at full price. then when you factor in the delivery costs it becomes quite expensive. its a great idea, artistically done and at a lower price i could see a lot more people being interested

@Kadu Thanks for your compliments! We think your suggestion is good. We will use your advice in next Gamebook project (vol.2). :)

Hey team! Congrats on the great campaign. Suggestion for your next KS: instead of book count-based stretch goals, make them based on money raised. If it would help us reach the stretch goal, I might have switched from a "Hi Bird" to a "KS edition" (which is almost twice the price), and get myself a nicer version of the book. But as is, the only way to help is getting 3 books (at an extra $100 plus extra shipping), which is way more than I'd like to spend. You need to give us an incentive to give you more money!

@Ben Hi! Thanks for the coment. What you suggest is possible. We also tried these option but we think uncolored wooden stiks are nicer.

Excited about this project! Not sure if this is possible, but might I recommend having the flat side of the sticks painted a different color? It makes it much easier to quickly determine what was rolled at a glance. Of course, I could always just paint them myself when i get the book! Thanks for such a cool project!

Hello @Eric, thank you so much for your comment! This was our plan all along! :) It was quite a challenge to fit all the games and gaming pices in one book, but we made it work and we hope that other volumes that will follow will give you even more games to play and enjoy! Thank you for your support! :)

@Greatlich We are excited to! We are certain that we will achieve this goal. ;) If we miss stretch goal for few books, we will unlock stretch goal anyway, because we think all the supporters and backers of Gamebook deserve that! ;)

@Ivander Thanks for your compliments! :) There is one classic board game called Royal Game of Ur which we find really inspiring and we would like to include it in Gamebook vol. 2! Of course if you have any suggestions or you know any interesting ancient board game, please let us know! We would love to do some research and investigation!

I love your project, well designed, and on the spot!
I would like to second Thomas DN and others, who asked about the further volumes - we all know of few other classic games, which would also deserve such remake. Have you considered making another book, have you thought about any games to include in your new volume? I can help you name a few...

@Minoru TODA Thanks for your comments. Its our first Kickstarter project and we believe there is always something new to learn during every process of a project. We will take your advice seriously, remove you from our contacts and we will try to choose new friends more carefully.

@Hana Jesih: As a project creator, it is your duty to oversee project advertisements.
Just because you have befriended with helpful spammer does not remove you from your responsibilities. It is very easy to earn dislikes by sending unsolicited emails. Please choose your "friends" wisely.

@Minoru TODA We are small team behind the project - Hana & Peter with a lot of friends and acquaintances who helped us spread the word about our project. We cross collaborated with few friends who did some Kickstarter projects. We have avoided all offers from companies which are promising different kind of project boosts. We did project Gamebook by ourself and we try to promote it in same manner.

@ThomasDN Thanks for keeping on the conversation!
@Steve Sebban There will be three volumes, because until now responses about first edition of Gamebook was really good. This give us energy and confidence for future projects!
@All Backers Do you have any favourite ancient strategy board game that could be included in the next Gamebook?

Four days without comments... That won't do! Where will y'all be using your game books? Are you looking forward to an entire series of books?

@David DeKeizer Thanks four you support and encouragement! Of course we will communicate with all backers about progress of the project. We are already arranging supplies for playing pieces and communicating with few print shops about execution of Gamebook. We will try to do our best to deliver Gamebooks on time, but of course there is always an option that timetable can change a bit ... our backers will be first to know about every detail of the process. Again thanks for supporting the project not timetable ;)

I am glad to have stumbled on this KS, I love games and history.. so this book is perfect!
I hope that your plan to expand with more volumes can work out, and will gladly back those when you are ready! I do expect that you won't hit your intended delivery date, I have backed a number of specialty print/token KSrs before and not one has had smooth sailing, even the one that was 'just' a reprint! If this ends up being the case here, I highly recommend ensuring that there is clear communication... I may not speak for everyone here, but I am pledging to support you...not the time-table!

@Toby Craig Thank you very much for sharing the photo! The long 6 sided dice is definitely interesting! I have to find out more about those sticks, to perhaps include them in Gamebook edition vol.2 ;)

@Laurel Schneider Hi! A special deal for our first supporters is Hi Bird (39 $ + shipping). Another good deal we believe is Early Bird (49 $ + shipping). The first edition of the Gamebook will be the same as number of all collected pre-orders in this Kickstarter campaign. We will ship first Hi Birds, after Eary Birds, then others. So, the main difference between a Hi Bird and an Early Bird is price and priority of delivery. @Toby Craig I am curious about version of Chaupar game you have seen! I was really happy when my friend send me a "postcard" of one unknown board game she saw in the museum in Crete, Greece. Isn't it a wonderful thing to see unknown ancient board game and wonder how the game was played? Gamebook journey (our research of board game history) led us to different museums, antique shops, old books, some countries we haven't visited them before ... obviously we love to play 'explorers' too! :)

Hi! What’s the difference between the “early bird” and the “faster than early bird” first edition game books? They both deliver in November, and the “faster than” version is $4 more.

I was visiting the Museum of Fine Arts Houston today and at the "Peacock of the Desert" exhibit they had a Chaupar game set with long dice and pawns from Western India, late 19th century. Made me think about this project. :)

@Lunchkunn I am glad to hear that you like how the book is presented. We tried to present Gamebook through its minimalistic features and mainly personally! Hope you can feel that! :)
@Greatlich and @David I like to look at books like they are art! :)
@ThomasDN Your comment gave us the verve and encouragement to spread the word about our project. We were funded next day! Thanks! :)

I was always under the impression that customs and shipping can be a big hassle with strong magnets involved. I tried to ship a fridge magnet into the EU one time, and the USPS wouldn't let me - oy!

Hello Imp House, These magnets are commonly used and can be supplied by various magnet producers around the world. Not a problem! Best Regards,
