Kapsul W5 Window Air Conditioner

Editor's Rating
4.8?
Discovered on 2016-04-24

Access to nice cold air on a hot summer day traditionally means a large and unsightly white box filling your window. But with the Kapsul W5 Smart Window Air Conditioner, you can have your chilled air and your window, too. Compact and keeping a low profile, the W5 is super easy to install and still allows light to come through the window as it stands less than six inches tall. Despite the small size, the concealed fans and ventilation system are quiet yet highly engineered and extremely efficient. The intuitive interface of the W5 is a breeze to use thanks to a smooth dial with clearly marked temperatures. Choose to use W5 at any temperature listed, in fresh air mode just like an open window, or in night mode with dimmed lights. Sleek and modern yet minimal, the W5 is everything you need in a smart air conditioner.

The specification of Noria says cooling capacity of 5000 BTU/Hour for 160 square feet room, for this big a room, 1 ton to 1.5 ton AC is required or 12000-20000/BTU is required, Now how will this unit cool the room efficiently ?

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Aditya, Thanks for the question. A 12,000 Btu air conditioner can cool between 450 and 550 square feet of floor space (ref: http://homeguides.sfgate.com/much-space-12000-btu-air-conditioner-cool-86811.html). In this case, the Noria comes with a 5000 BTU/hour cooling capacity for a 160 square feet which is quite a standard number for efficient cooling. Thanks.

With all due respect, you might just want to check those numbers!, there are a lot of calculators online that can give you a rough range.

I am currently using an LG 1 Ton window type AC and in past I have used, Samsung and Hitachi (which are good white goods brand in this segment), Now I sleep in around 160 square bedroom and trust me 1 ton AC takes quite a fair amount of time to achieve that 22-23 degrees Celsius temperature.

I would like to know how a 5000 BTU unit can cool as much as a 20000 BTU unit

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi there, the numbers are incomparable here. However, coming to Noria’s working principle, Noria is designed to blow cold air upwards to mix with the warm air below as it falls. This circulation removes the warm spots in the room while preventing cold air from being recirculated, which improves comfort and efficiency. At 5,000 BTU/hr, Noria can cool a 10’x16′ room, or two Noria units can cool a room up to 330 sq ft.

How wide does the adjustable plastic support frame expand to?

Steve

How many amps does it draw? Is it inverter technology?

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Steve, thanks for your query. The unit will draw approximately 4 amps during operation. We are not sure about the inverter technology though. Will get back to you with this.

Amber Danielle Johnson

What about a more square frame with an expander that goes up?

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hmm…sounds cool Amber but somehow we prefer the rectangular design. It makes the air conditioner look more sleek. Square is so 2015! :P

Just a thought for those of us who have windows that slide sideways. No big deal. Just won’t buy it.

Noria Technologies

Amber, we’ve received some pretty overwhelming response from people like yourself seeking a vertically oriented unit. We can’t make any promises yet, particularly during this Kickstarter campaign, but we’re working on it!

Hello. Does this come with a money-back guaranty if it does not cool a 13 x 13 insulated glass room with overhead fan?

Aditya Mall
Aditya Mall

Exactly my thought, I am not sure how it is going to cool a 13X13 room.

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Joseph, there is no news on the money-back guarantee yet but it does come with a 1 year warranty =)

Joseph Melillo
Joseph Melillo

Thank you. However, I am of the opinion that a 1 year warranty will replace broken or worn parts. However, if the unit runs properly and nothing is worn out and nothing is broken, but the BTU output is not enough to cool the room, I am stuck with a product that does not perform the task that it was purchased to perform.

Hello, do you have it in a 220 volt unit. Thanks.

Janis
Janis

What are the dimensions of the air conditioner, I have small bedroom windows?

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Janis, in order to use Noria, your window opening size needs to be 20.5″ to 36″ wide. Thanks :)

Jon Duda
Jon Duda

My window opens left to right not up and down. Would the unit work the same if it’s sideways???

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Jon, Noria is currently designed to only be placed horizontally. There are a number of engineering issues that must be addressed before Noria could be placed vertically, including compressor lubrication and condensate dripping. However, given the feedback from many interested parties, the team is exploring incorporating this into the design as we move forward with production. However, potential backers should note that they cannot commit to accommodating a vertical installation at this time. :)

I divided the garage in two areas of 10’x10′. Could I install the unit on the dividing (office and garage) wall and have the same eficiency? The air at the garage is pretty hot due to the season, but has grills to permit air circulation.

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Santiago, We’ve passed your query to the Noria team. Someone from the team will reply shortly :) Thanks!

Emmadelle
Emmadelle

Does it need a drain hose, to wick away water, like a conventional a/c?

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Thanks for the query. Noria’s window frame adapter is designed to tilt the unit 3-degrees up so that the condensate can collect and drip outside of the window it’s installed into. Noria will protrude about 8-9” from the window, which will prevent water from dripping down the side of the building.

Lorraine Langlais
Lorraine Langlais

I like the design but what are the specs for noise? I’m looking for a quiet air conditioner.

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Lorraine, thanks for reaching out. The noise is close to 50dB which would be something like a moderate rainfall. :)

Kimberly Witwer

I would like to know if there will be any vertical versions in the future because most windows open sideways and not up and down anymore (at least here in Montana anyways) so I was wondering since they open that way if you could also make a vertical version as well?

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Kimberly, Thanks for the query. Here’s what their Kickstarter campaign says “Noria is currently designed to only be placed horizontally. There are a number of engineering issues that must be addressed before Noria could be placed vertically, including compressor lubrication and condensate dripping. However, given the feedback from many interested parties, we are exploring incorporating this into the design as we move forward with production. Anthony Belmore

Does have an energy star rating?

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Hi Anthony, We are not sure about the energy star rating but this is what Noria team says on energy savings . “Noria will cost about $50.00 to run during the summer months. This is an extremely rough estimation, based on the following calculation:

0.480 kilowatts x 9.5 hours of cooling per day x 90 cooling days per season x $0.12 per kilowatt hour = $49 dollars a summer.

Your energy needs will vary depending on your geography, how hot the summer is, how what temperature you set the room to, and how much electricity costs in your locale.”

Anthony Belmore
Anthony Belmore

What is the return policy if doesn’t work when it arrives?

hello@thegadgetflow.com

Noria will ship with a 1-year warranty but you can get more details by directly contacting the team here: http://www.noriahome.com/contact/

We had a big problem with our basic window unit this year when we had some torrential downpours. The water would fill the window sill and leak under the ‘wings’ that filled the space on either side of the air conditioner. The sliders were just not flush to the sides of the window frame or the sill so it flooded and we ruined our hardwood floors. Noria seems like something we could easily remove, air conditioner AND plastic frame in case of torrential rain. For this reason we would NOT want to screw the frame into the window. Is that… Read more »

Hey! I understand this is sort of off-topic but I had to ask. Does managing a well-established website like yours require a lot of work? I am completely new to blogging however I do write in my journal everyday. I’d like to start a blog so I can share my experience and views online. Please let me know if you have any kind of suggestions or tips for brand new aspiring blog owners. Thankyou!

Were you able to actually test the unit? Because you’ve given it five stars, and yet, from my understanding, not a single unit has shipped, even though it is already passed the expected ship date from Kickstarter. How can you expect people to trust you if you have not used the product reviewed??

The window frame part of it is superb and needed innovative and will likely be copied. This is likely to have borderline cooling power or reliability issues because they’re squeezing a whole lot in with all the pathways, fans and a small compressor along with that huge t-stat.
