If a single product could combine photography and VR, it’d be the new Canon RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens. This new piece of equipment is genuinely fascinating and will open doors for content creators and photographers seeking to expand their work in the VR space.

With new products like HTC’s VIVE Flow on the horizon, this lens couldn’t come at a better time. Of course, you’re probably asking, “Yeah, but what exactly does it do?” Let’s dive in and take a look.

It shoots in 8K stereoscopic 3D for VR

Many VR simulators use what’s called stereoscopic 3D to create the illusion of depth. It does this through stereoscopic displays that show a different view of the scene to each eye. As the images from each process together, they merge to form a seemingly 3D version of the original scene. It’s a technique that allows 3D and VR simulations to be much more immersive.

Because the Canon RF5.2mm F2.8 L can shoot in 8K stereoscopic 3D, it can capture images or video in a way that can be used to create scenes for 3D VR simulations. This is especially cool because it gives content creators that much more accessibility and flexibility for producing content.

It includes incredible dual fisheye lenses

The RF5.2mm F.28 L includes high-quality dual fisheye lenses with an inter-pupillary distance of 60mm and natural parallax comparable to human vision when viewed through compatible headsets. It can provide an incredible 190º field of view as well.

It offers a maximum aperture range of f/2.8 with an f/16 depth of field. A close focusing distance of 7.87 inches is also possible.

It has fluorine coating plus a gelatin filter holder

The lens kit also has a fluorine coating that improves water and dust resistance. This way, you have less to worry about while working outdoors.

A built-in gelatin filter holder lets ND gel filters be applied in environments containing higher levels of bright light. The entire product is compact and easy to transport and maneuver.
