DJI Launches the New Phantom 4 Pro with Mighty Upgrades
Whenever DJI has something to say, the technology world listens. The Chinese drone-maker recently unveiled the new Phantom 4 Pro, the latest evolution in this popular series. The new arrival is one of the smartest RC vehicles ever, and it features incredible new imaging abilities.
- Amazing obstacle detection
- Brand new 20MP camera built in
- Remote control with integrated touchscreen
It would be fair to say that the Phantom 4 Pro is a filmmaker’s dream. The biggest upgrade on the new drone is the gimbal-mounted camera, which now shoots stunning 4k video at 60 frames per second, and 20-megapixel photos on a large 1-inch sensor. The lens offers wide apertures for better low-light performance, and a mechanical shutter to avoid video distortion.
The Phantom 4 Pro is also more aware than its predecessors; stereo sensors dotted around the drone provide five-way obstacle detection. It makes the drone quite hard to crash, while the new controller lets you draw flight paths on the integrated 1080p touchscreen. With FlightAutonomy mode, you can even get the drone to follow moving subjects independently.
Impressively, the Pro edition weighs no more than its predecessor, thanks to a redesigned magnesium-aluminum alloy body. With a range of 4.3 miles and a top speed of 45 mph, this drone is made for exploring.
What We Love
The new camera is incredible, and very few consumer drones offer so many control options, combined with 30 minutes of battery life.
Areas for Improvement
All those controls can seem bewildering for first-time pilots, so a simplified view would be welcome. Likewise, it would be nice to see some rotor guards in the box.
