The new HP Chromebook 14 has a need for speed

Spend most of your day working in a browser? The new HP Chromebook 14 should cover your needs. This lightweight workhorse is the perfect productivity machine for folks who like to work in the cloud.

For many years, potential laptop owners have had only two major operating systems to choose from. Windows and OS X are powerful and polished platforms, capable of handling virtually any computing task. However, both systems also come with bloat.

For those of us who spend our days checking emails and editing spreadsheets, Chrome OS offers a lightweight alternative. The new HP Chromebook 14 runs Google’s operating system at speed, thanks to the latest dual-core AMD processors. Better still, this slimline machine is more affordable than most tablets.

What is the best laptop under $300?

Trying to buy a laptop for $300 usually means searching eBay. Even if you do find a PC in decent condition, it probably won’t run the latest version of Windows at anything like top speed.

HP’s new Chromebook is a lightweight workhorse

With the HP Chromebook 14, you get a brand new machine for that money. What’s more, this isn’t some underpowered toy. Running on AMD Dual-Core A-Series processors and 4GB of RAM, the device lets you work at blazing speed.

Lightweight workhorse

As the name suggests, the Chromebook 14 has a 14-inch display. You only get 720p resolution, but the screen is crisp enough for completing everyday tasks and watching YouTube videos.

The Chromebook 14 offers nine hours of battery life

In spite of this generous screen real estate, the HP weighs only 3.3 pounds. In comparison, the 13.3-inch MacBook Air is just 3 ounces lighter.

Furthermore, you should get over nine hours of battery life on a full charge. This makes the Chromebook 14 well suited to folks who need to work on the move.

The keyboard is decent, too

Under the hood, you get 32GB of eMMC storage for downloads. If you need more space, the microSD port lets you add a memory card. The Chromebook also offers two USB Type-C ports and two USB 2.0 ports for connecting external drives and accessories.

The Chromebook 14 provides multiple ports to play with

Along with apps and extensions from the Chrome Web Store, you can use most Android apps on the Chromebook 14. This opens up much more choice, particularly in terms of creativity and gaming.

Speaking of which, occasional gamers will appreciate the inclusion of AMD Radeon R4 Graphics. For other forms of entertainment, the built-in stereo speakers provide a solid audio experience.

“Make this the perfect PC for your daily dose of entertainment. Includes dual stereo speakers. Plus, a 180° hinge that makes it easy to collaborate and share with others.” — HP

The best parts

We can’t believe how affordable this thing is. In addition, Chrome OS uses very little CPU power. As a result, the Chromebook 14 runs faster than laptops that retail at twice the price.

Future designs

The design could be sleeker

We have seen prettier Chromebooks in the same price range. While the HP has provided good connectivity, the design team could do better.
