Nionè is introducing African fashion to the world
Africa is a hotbed of creative talent, but local fashion designers rarely achieve global recognition. Nionè wants to change that for good.
- Thanks to the success of Black Panther at the box office, African fashion has received a Hollywood boost.
- But the movement isn’t only about movies. In Puerto Rico, African-made fabrics are in demand.
- Nionè Fashion is a new brand that wants to continue the trend by giving African fashion designers new opportunities.
From the stylish Sapeurs to the beautiful kanga of Kenya, Africa is filled with fashion. On this continent, clothes are more than throwaway embellishments. The look may differ from nation to nation, but the same sense of pride prevails. It’s a crying shame, then, that shoppers in the rest of the world rarely get to see the work of African designers. Nionè is a new brand that wants to change that by giving those designers a global platform.
African fashion
The apparel of Africa is much too diverse to be lumped together in one category. It would be just as ridiculous as saying Mexican culture is identical to the Canadian way of life. But given the lack of global opportunity afforded to many African designers, it’s only sensible that they should band together.
Nionè is the brainchild of Ugandan entrepreneur, Charles Mugyenzi. With the help of two local brands, he aims to turn sophisticated African style into a valuable export.
Contemporary style
It’s not hard to see the potential in the Nionè plan. First and foremost, the fledgling range is filled with beauty and quality.
Take the Nionè Travel Bag as an example. Created by the ladies of Biika Bags, this classic holdall is made from top grain leather. The distressed look adds a contemporary feel, while wax prints at either end provide some vibrant color. There are several color combinations to pick from, so you should find something that matches your look.
As the name suggests, the Travel Bag is perfect for weekend getaways. It has a spacious capacity and adjustable straps, adding pragmatism to the prettiness.
For your everyday needs, the LP Disc Bag offers a stylish solution. Shaped like a vinyl record, these handbags are covered in stunning patterns. The design is very original, and the shape also offers excellent access to your personal belongings. As with the other bag, the LP Disc comes in a range of contrasting styles.
Shoes glorious shoes
The most vivid patterns of all are reserved for the Nionè Oxford Shoes. From the name, you might be expecting something business-like — but these heels are anything but stale.
They are made from leather and suede, with a lace-up design. Wax-printed patterns cover most of each shoe, with oranges, reds, blues, and pinks being the predominant shades. Designed by Buqisi Ruux, another group of talented women, these shoes are perhaps the most eye-catching products in the Nionè range.
