Belle Premium Speaker and Bluetooth Hub

Editor's Rating
4.9?
Discovered on 2017-08-21

Delight your inner audiophile with the Belle Premium Speaker and Bluetooth Hub by Podo Labs. Belle produces stunningly powerful 100-Watt sound and incredible bass thanks to dual full-range drivers and a 5-inch subwoofer. The SUB subwoofer mode kicks the bass up a notch (or two) and the 35Hz frequency limit is lower than any other portable speaker. However, the Belle Speaker does so much more. Belle is the only device that lets you connect up to six additional speakers of any brands to create a Bluetooth stereo system. This means that you can enjoy full surround sound no matter where your adventures take you. Best of all, Belle is totally future-proof as it’s compatible with any Bluetooth speaker you own now or in the future. Belle is a must-have for any music lover’s collection.

My car does not have a subwoofer. Can you connect iPhone and belle with Bluetooth and use car audio and belle with aux out?
Annie
yey! stretch goal!
Podo Labs
@shih wei yeh - I'm sorry but we do not know the exact amount but we will put as low a value on the shipment we are allowed to! @Annie, Rutul Parikh - Yes, we will absolutely tune now until we deliver. Right now it is at a preliminary stage! Of course bass and power you can't really fake, so our priority was in proving that ability first. I personally already think it sounds great but we demoed it for the reporter side-by-side with the $499 Beloit 17, which probably factors into that line. Thank you for the kind words :) @Darin Cline - In subwoofer mode, it only applies to the Belle. The satellites are playing independently; as far as they're "aware", they're connected directly to the music source like a phone. Any specialized configuration of channels beyond the default will have to be made possible through an app. We fully intend on making this app if we get the opportunity! Unfortunately our campaign and company need to grow a bit to have the resources to do so... @Michael Hartmann - Welcome to the campaign! And thank you. The cloth will be covering a metal mesh, sort of like those cylindrical JBLs. So there will definitely be structure underneath. The cloth is mostly for water resistance and visual look. Thank you!
Michael Hartmann
I just pledged yesterday and I am excited at the prospect of finally having an affordable Bluetooth speaker that will provide the deep clear bass that has been previously non-existent. I read that there will be speaker cloth over the top of the housing. I was wondering if there has been any consideration of using a metal mesh covering like many portable, splash-proof speakers? I would think that it would be more durable for those of us who will be using it mainly in an outdoor setting. Thanks in advance for considering this option and for creating an incredible product.
Darin Cline
Can you detail the processing in multi-speaker mode? In subwoofer mode, is a high-pass filter applied to the other speakers (bass frequencies filtered out of satellites)? If so, is this configurable? I saw mention that as default, when connected to satelletes, The Belle defaults as a center channel. Is that configurable (Belle in stereo and satellites in stereo). Thanks!
Rutul Parikh
Hey @podolabs congratulations for that BI review, now's the time to beat that 'grat-but-not-stellar overall sound' line and tweak Belle to deliver the sparkling highs and warm mids, too. Best Luck and again, congratulations!
Annie
Business Insider "I sampled the 100-watt model Belle, which has great-but-not-stellar overall sound quality" @podo are you guys planning on making it stellar?
shih wei yeh
any idea on the taxes for us or canada deliveries?
Podo Labs
@jorge franco - Will do!
jorge franco
Hey Poco Labs can you make an update for the backpack. All I got from watching the live stream was that it has pockets and straps. Thank you.
Podo Labs
@Hans Meijer - Not every unit is international so that calculation is on the high side, but fair enough and we look forward to delivering Jack very soon!
Hans Meijer
Hmm, first you claim that the 50 bucks for international shipping is needed because it's such a heavy and large device... And now you can spare that money and give it back to every backer... That's quite a lot of money, 500x50 is 25.000. I think I'll pass on this one and wait for retail. Still waiting for the jack which will probably become an xmas gift.
Podo Labs
@Annie - Belle will mainly be a combination of super rigid polycarbonate, fiberglass, speaker fabric, and other materials. @Leon Everton - Our pleasure! @Su Yu Hsiang - Yes, please change to the Belle Reduced Price pledge level; then message us after the campaign ends and we will refund the $20 difference between the reduced price Belle and the super early bird Belle!
Su Yu Hsiang
As a Super Early Bird (Belle Lite) pledger, can I change to Belle(pay the differences) since you guys are now offering free shipping :)) ? If so, how?
Leon Everton
@Podo labs Thanks for your honest answer. I have watched your live stream and it was excellent so well done with that. Yes the Bigboy is more expensive and it has to be tethered to a plug socket. :-)
Annie
what material will you be using to build Belle?
Podo Labs
@Leon Everton - That speaker is almost a meter tall and over 50 lbs, so definitely not a portable speaker. It also looks about 3x more expensive so it is hard to compare. They have a 10" subwoofer whereas ours is 5", so they will have significantly better bass performance and overall power (they are also not battery powered). We think it's more illustrating to compare ourselves to the top Bluetooth speakers of other brands, such as the flagship Beolit 17 from Bang & Olufsen. That speaker is $499 but our is still more powerful and with better bass. Did you check out our live stream or this comparison video yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch…
Leon Everton
@Creator How does the Belle compare to this? http://www.azatom.com/index.php…
Podo Labs
@Annie - Haha wish we had that extra cash to buy one too! We definitely want to make music fun like the Phantom. @Deon Jones - Cheers!
jorge franco
I
Deon Jones
Champion stuff guys thanks.
Annie
See ya guys, going to get the Gold Phantom! lol.. just kidding :) That's my first time hearing about gold phantom and it does sound amazing. It's great that you guys are comparing Belle to it :)
Podo Labs
@Deon Jones - We are planning on finding a source and offering them at-cost; I imagine it will be a dollar or two. How about if we make it to our next stretch goal ($200k) we'll throw it in for free? Let's do it! :D @ben1680 - Thanks for that input! I will pass it to our CTO as I agree, that would be nice to not need a separate charger. However, I think a consideration will be how capable will it be to power the device when you are using it while plugged in. We sure would love avoiding the cost of a power adaptor haha but it may be a necessity. @rdrigo - Yes! No action necessary. :) thank you for supporting us so early.
rdrigo
Hello. I paid for the super early bird Belle lite. Is there any shipping refund for super early birds?
ben1680
@Creator Is there anyway you can make Belle charge via USB (Fast Charge)? Cheap charging controller IC from TI for example, are already capable of fast charging both way (input and output) as well as pass through.
10.000mAh will only takes around 3.5 hour (3A charge current for QC2.0 standard). I think everyone hate having to bring around separate plug/adapter just for Belle.
You also potentially can save money by only including good quality charging cable instead of having to provide wall adaptor.
Deon Jones
Hi there, so just about the power plugs. As you're saying they'll be available in the backerkit after the campaign has completed. Does that mean there will be a charge for it? Or will it be a selectable option like as if you were choosing colour or something? As not overly keen on the extra charge just for a different plug lol. Cheers.
citiboi
oops... sorry. My bad. Will wait for your response by private message.
citiboi
Hi Please respond to my private message to you. Thanks.
Podo Labs
@Matthias M. - Yes, we will! We have experience getting these certifications for our products several times before. @Benjamin Schütte - There definitely will be one available through BackerKit, after the campaign is over! @citiboi - We will check your private message now, thanks! @Zane Thompson - We are not currently considering an optical input, but as far as the app, we really do want to make it as it will be a strong investment in making the product better for everyone. The only reality is that we're a small team and making an app is hard (as we've found before) and we want to do it right. To be honest, even if we do not hit the stretch goal to make the app, we will still pursue it. It realistically means that it wouldn't be ready in time for launch though, and would become our second priority. We can definitely control individual speaker volumes through the app and other cool things like that. And yes, even without the app the speakers are connecting in stereo orientation, L and R alternating, with Belle as C. This is the default. Thank you for your vote of confidence Zane! We really appreciate it, and we're proud if our products can become a fun part of people's lives. Stay tuned!
Zane Thompson
Hey there I have a couple of questions, would you consider making stretch goals products? Such as the app, which I think would be an awesome product and avenue to further invest in the Belle platform. Has an optical input been considerd? Has the ability to individually control individual connectes speaker volume through Belle been considered? Is it possible to make Belle have the option to feed connected speakers in a way that could be surround sound? Thanks! You have an awesome product and I am proud to back such an outstanding company.
citiboi
Please scratch my earlier comment. I just read your explanation to Hoan Lam's comment. Please read my private message to you though...
citiboi
Did I miss something? Why does the campaign page say : *** FREE SHIPPING worldwide! *** Please clarify....
Benjamin Schütte
Well, then EU backers will definitely need to know theres a EU plug available, or it will be totally useless here :)
Matthias M.
Since it uses bluetooth will it have appropriate FCC & CE certificates to get it through customs?
Podo Labs
@ben1680 - You're welcome! A constraint we run into is the lithium ion battery size allowed by airlines, which we researched to be basically 10,000 mAh. We want people to be able to take this on the plane, so that's where we set the target. However, the 8 hours is a little conservative we think, as it assumes the bass driver is pumping constantly during that time at med-high volume, but of course music has more bass on the beats rather than constantly pounding (well.. most music haha). The bass driver by far is the biggest factor in battery life. @B. van Est - The sub mode is simply a button that cuts out power to the full range drivers and allows more power to go to the bass driver. It is still behaving like a normal connecting speaker; it's more like an extreme bass EQ setting. If you already have an AV system, it would connect to Belle if it were equipped with Bluetooth, or, if you could connect external satellites via Aux cable, in which case you could plug in Belle. Unfortunately EU customers are still responsible for VAT; the distribution was referring to the method of bringing them in via one injection point but it is not a standalone distribution center dedicated for Belle per se. @Benjamin Schütte - Belle is not charged via USB, that would be too slow. It is charged via direct wall plug. The USB is for charging your other devices like a smartphone while using the Belle. @Hoan Lam - We will automatically refund you the shipping cost if you choose not to switch. Either way is up to you! We will be able to see who needs shipping refunds through Backerkit after the campaign concludes and Backerkit accounts are created. @Leon Everton- We were able to download it from Kickstarter and will post it as an update! Thanks everyone!
Leon Everton
Is there any way to watch the live chat as I missed it?
Hoan Lam
So do i need to switch to the new one? $269 free shipping or it will automatically refund the shipping cost in my pledge?
Benjamin Schütte
Will EU backers really need a wall adapter? From the campaign page, I understand this is charged through USB. Or is it not? If not - why? :P
B. van Est
You also mentioned in the live session something about different distrubution centres. If you have one distrubution centre in the EU, does that mean the EU backers won't have to worry about import & taxes?
B. van Est
Can you explain more about the 'sub-mode'?
For example: If I'm watching a Netflix series on my 5.1 AV-system, how does it communicate with that?
ben1680
@Creator Thank you for the free shipping, appreciate it.
Just an idea about intermediate stretch goal, maybe you can offer bigger capacity battery? It shouldn't differ much in term of price, yet it will give you more marketing bullet point as another advantage for Belle...
Podo Labs
@Autonomous Smart Office - Thank you!
Autonomous Smart Office
The intuition behind this is amazing! Congrats on meeting your goal and good luck on the rest of your campaign.
Podo Labs
@Annie - Input very much appreciated. We will shoot for 3pm on Friday and make the announcement today!
Annie
@podo I would personally prefer Friday. If you start around 2/3pm on Friday, it would be approx 7/8am on Sat in Australia and 5/6am for Singapore/Malaysian backers, 11/12am for France/Germany/Netharlands, 10/11pm Friday for UK backers (just basing details on the backer community stats), and I assume people are willing to sleep later on a weekend compared to a weekday?
Podo Labs
@David Communi - Yes we will get that on video and live stream! @Cam Palmer - Yes it will take any 3.5mm aux cable as an input option in addition to Bluetooth.
Podo Labs
@Annie - We will post a video and also hold a Kickstarter Live so everyone can see it and ask questions to us directly. Side note: what day/time would work for most people to hold this live session? We are thinking either this Friday or next Monday, around mid afternoon California time. @Cas_per_M - As per the update Annie is referring to, we are waiting for factories to complete their work and managing them as they do so; we will post a campaign-wide update once something significant like assembly begins! I apologize we have been slow with the comments; I just posted a response there a few minutes ago. Your feelings are well warranted and I apologize it has felt that way; I promise we will get everything together so that Jack backers, and all backers, are taken care of fairly and personally. If you ever need direct answers, please email support@podolabs.com as well and they will refer you to the right answer or right person to talk to. Thank you. @Hans Meijer - Well noted! @Sven C. - We will offer an EU wall adapter (if you do not already own one) in Backerkit at cost. Understood about the shipping and customs costs. Please let me get back to you on that; the taxes will be on an amount less than the full pledge amount, and we are currently working on a way to alleviate the shipping costs in the first place in the form of rebate.
Annie
@Cas_per_M did you even read the August 17th update on JACK? It says "We have finished the board modifications and will now move towards production! The first run will be a few hundred units we expect to finish Sept 17. We don't expect these to have any problems, and we will ship them out immediately. " Isn't that more than enough update? At the mean time wait until September 17 for the next update
Sven C.
@Podo You don't offer a EU-Wallplug ? How can / should I charge Belle ? ( I just read the comment von B. van Est ) Another question : Will the taxes already be included with the shipping ? I hope so!
Just as a sample calculation :
I'm a super early bird backer for 249$ + 49$ shipping = 298$ with the conversion rate from today thats 250,77€ so adding 19% German Taxes ( 47,66€ ) I will have to pay 298,42€ for Belle ( plus sometimes a extra charge for customs ). I really hope that you 1st include a EU Wallplug and 2nd that the customs are included ... otherwise Belle is really expensive for European customers / backers.
