SoundBrake 2.0 Headphones Awareness Device

Editor's Rating
4.7?
Discovered on 2017-07-18

Stay alert even while you’re rocking out with the SoundBrake 2.0 Headphones Awareness Device. This attaches to your headset and enables you to keep hearing what’s important. Perfect for traveling, gaming, or even working, the SoundBrake 2.0 is superbly smart. Incredibly, it constantly listens to the world around you and selectively streams in outside sounds that are louder than a custom alert level. Sounds that stand out from the rest of the environmental noise filter through to keep you informed. These would be sounds like a door knock, honk of a car horn, an announcement, and more. In addition, it works with any audio player and set of headphones including wireless. With the SoundBrake 2.0, you can immerse yourself into musical oblivion without being totally oblivious. Best of all, the device doesn’t impact the sound quality of your music

Hi Graham, great to hear you received SoundBrake. Some people are receiving SoundBrake without customs charges and others are being charged...seems very unpredictable and random. In any case, I hope you enjoy using SoundBrake and the transmitter. Best, Shari

Thank you I received my soundbrake yesterday. Sadly got charged by uk customs oh well some my kickstarters passed no issues but some got stopped and charged. Still not bothered my risk and possible due to my wireless transceiver I backed with as this you can get in the uk. Still when you consider that is £49 or £16 on amazon sale still made value for money with my soundbrake.

Thank you for the prompt response Shari, that makes sense. I did watch the video and I think I’ve got a good grasp on how to better use the SoundBrake now. Thanks again for all your hard work making the SoundBrake a reality. The SoundBrake is a great device and I’m definitely going to tell everyone I know (who use headphones a lot) about it. I wish you all the best! ~ Paul

Hey Paul, I'm glad you got SoundBrake up and running. The way it works with adjustment is that after you press the Set Level button, it's listening to your ambient sound level while it illuminates for 3 seconds. After that, SoundBrake will alert you to outside sound that is louder than your ambient sound level. For example, if you're in a quiet room and you press the button, the alert level will be more sensitive to sounds because of your lower ambient noise level. If you talk while the button is illuminating, you will have to talk louder or shout afterwards in order to be alerted to sound because of your higher ambient noise level. You can also increase the sensitivity level with the Up button (there's five levels)...the 5th level is very sensitive. I'm not sure if you had a chance to look at the instructional video I posted, but you might find it helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch… Please let me know if you still have questions! Best, Shari

Just got mine in the mail today! Charged it up and started testing it out; so far, so good. 👍🏼 Shari, do you have any additional tips for better fine tuning the Soundbrake? I’m guessing that the initial sound adjustment should be made with normal sounds around you rather than in a room that is completely silent, correct? I’d like to be able to adjust mine where I can be listening to music in one room, and have the Soundbrake interrupt be if my daughter calls/shouts for me from another room...not sure if that’s possible. Thank you!

@Shari:
Thanks for today's update.
Unfortunate about the delay, however your adequate way of dealing with it and informing the backers about it is - and I can't stretch this enough - makes you an excellent Kickstarter 'creator'. We could only wish every creator would be like that. The clip option is perfect, thank you for including that. Can't wait for the SoundBrake 2.0 to arrive. Do you have any plans already for releasing your next product/idea? You can count me in :)

Hi Bernard, I have not been using holidays as an excuse. Yes, there are some holidays in China that impact production. Chinese New Year shuts down the factories for nearly a month. The other holiday mentioned in the below comment from last week delayed communication by a day-I posted an update the following day describing in detail the current situation, and how it was expected to delay production completion by a few weeks. I've also shown progress with production and product photos. I'm pushing to get this done as hard as I can. -Shari

How many more holidays you will use for excuse? I order 5 but I am going to use my AMEX credit card cs to file a refund (and they are really good at it)

Hi again Jerice! Apparently there is a "Ching Ming" holiday in China that just ended, so the factory couldn't get the info to me today. I have another call scheduled tomorrow and I should finally get the info then!! Sorry for the delay. -Shari

Hi SD, after many inquires, I found that China fulfillment companies require large minimum order quantities and ongoing contracts, which would not be feasible at this time. Additionally, I have all the Bluetooth transmitter units here in the US. Best, Shari

Hi Shari. Just curious if you have any updates about where everything stands with the project right now. I know you're last update things were a little behind schedule, but I was wondering if any progress has been made since then. Thank you! - Paul S.

You can change your shipping address on the survey at any time. I'll let everyone know when I have the firm shipment date and details, so you'll know when it's the last chance to make a change to your shipping address. :)

Hi Shari,
What kind of service will you use for shipping the pledges?
I am guessing that by the time you get an estimation on the shipment schedule we will have the opportunity to confirm the address right?

Hello Shari,
Thank you for always keeping us on track be it via update or this comments section. It turns following the progress into an effortless task!
If possible on the next update please give more details on what the issue you faced was and by how much it would possibly affect the delivery schedule. Keep up the great work.

Hi Edwin, Thank you for the comment. We're reviewing the pre-production PCB (there was a delay in receiving it) and I was going to wait to post an update until I have more information about the results. The injection molding order for the enclosure was started last week, which is good because that has the longest lead time of six weeks. We're also designing the packaging. I hope to post an update soon! Best regards,
Shari

Quick as always....thank you. Until now I have always chosen not to put any controls in the signal oath for the sake of clear sound. Now, as the Soundbrake is here to stay and does not interfere I was kinda hoping it might as well come with a voice call microphone. It's okay. Better to listen to music in a dedicated way and only to be disturbed when it's really needed (which could in fact be a call) than letting people ruin a wonderful listening pleasure ;)
Sundae Electronics
Review from Kickstarter
Hi Edwin! Thank you for your comments. :) The purpose of SoundBrake's built-in microphone is for listening to outside sound and streaming in outside sound, so its microphone isn't for use as a voice call microphone. The fourth conductor (mic) on SoundBrake's plug is already in use for allowing a headphone's built-in microphone or built-in track/volume controls to work with your phone or other audio player. Let me know if you have any other questions...thanks! Best regards, Shari
Edwin

@Shari:
As a backer of the V1 I know what to expect from the Soundbrake and I have no doubt this will be a fully improved version. Recently I have noticed the need for a microphone to take calls wearing my (in-ear) headphones. I know there are products on the market for this, but as tge Soundbrake is already in the signal path I was wonder if the new Soundbrake will offer such a feature? Or is the built in microphone for measuring outside noise only? Thanks! Kindest regards, Edwin

Hi Carlos, the cord will only be on the audio player side of SoundBrake (I described this design change in the last update). You can plug in any extension cord to the built-in cord, or plug an extension cord into the headphone side of SoundBrake if you want...do you have something in mind?
Carlos Yoneliunas
Review from Kickstarter
Is there a way to make the cord interchangable?
Sundae Electronics
Review from Kickstarter
Hi Peter! Currently, the cord is 2.5 inches on SoundBrake, and you can use an extension cord if you want. SoundBrake will have a clip on the back so it's wearable and you can clip it to your pocket.
Peter J Robinson
Review from Kickstarter
How long will the cord connecting SoundBrake to the phone be? My jeans have deep pockets so I wonder if I would need to use SoundBrake with an extension cable to make sure it's properly exposed.

Hi Heri, I'm not entirely clear on what your point is about iPhone 7...I want to clarify that SoundBrake 2.0 will work with iPhone 7 and any other audio player. It also has 50+ hours of battery life.

Great idea but this should really be a case for the iPhone 7

Also regarding the prototype enclosures, they were 3D printed and painted. The production version enclosures will be created from injection molding. I hope this clarifies the appearance of prototype vs. production.

Hi Ben1680, the photos of SoundBrake 2.0 are photos of the prototype. As I described in a previous update, the cables on the prototypes are off-the-shelf cables and are not a reflection of what the cables will look like in production.
ben1680
Review from Kickstarter
I agree to @Carlos, the cable (and plug/jack) and junction between cable and device is the one that really make me hesitate in backing SoundBrake.
The cable looks really small and flimsy, and the plug/jack also looks cheap. It definitely doesn't reflect SoundBrakes price.
The cable out, from and to SoundBrake plastic unit also looks abrupt and doesn't transition smoothly.
It will be good if the cable, jack/plug, and cable output can be improved before the devices goes into production...

Hi Brenton! Yes, SoundBrake 2.0 can be used while charging. The Bluetooth transmitter is currently being sourced by my manufacturer, and I'll post more information in an update as soon as it becomes available. The transmitter will have a rechargeable battery and is expected to have between 10-15 hours of battery life on a charge. It will have a 3.5mm connector that plugs into SoundBrake's audio jack.

Can the SoundBrake 2.0 be used while charging and what are the specs (eg is it battery operated if so what's the battery life etc.) of the Bluetooth transmitter?

Hi Graham, thank you very much for backing the campaign! You would plug SoundBrake in between your audio player and the wireless docking station on the analog audio output.
