Elegantly display the time with the Hudson Automatic Vintage Inspired Dive Watch. Aside from its powerful appearance, this watch also comes with a variety of impressive technical features. The 316L stainless steel casing houses Swiss Made ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. Similarly, the robust movement easily lasts a lifetime. Designed with a lot of attention to detail, the Hudson dial creates an interesting yet readable appearance. In addition, you can choose from four dial colors. Likewise, the Hudson Automatic comes in both the vintage size of 38mm as well as 42mm. The sandblasted dials offer a beautiful texture while the chapter ring gives the dial greater depth and detail. Furthermore, you can choose between an open or closed caseback. The open caseback features scratch resistant crystal sapphire glass. Additionally, the open caseback makes the watch water resistant to 100 meters while the closed caseback offers 200 meters.

Lets get these great watches out and onto our wrists and not worry about something that is water under the bridge at this point!

@MAEN thank you for clarifying everything. This is just a suggestion, as you must be busy now, but do you have a time to edit FAQ section? As Nuno Mendez said we don’t want to repeat this kind of argument anymore, while this comment section runs pretty fast and your explanation will be left in the past quickly. Copying and pasting some conversations from here to FAQ will suffice...

Review from Kickstarter
Hi Guys, we notice a lot of people are still confused about our pricing / VAT. It feels like this whole thing has been blowing up, and we got lots of questions / complaints regarding the VAT issue outside EU / current pricing. To make the story short, we did not calculate on this many backers outside the EU and therefore we simply did not have a proper solution ready since Kickstarter does not offer any setup for this matter. Our website was also not ready for non EU customers. We did however agree and felt like we needed to change our back-end system so prices outside the EU don't include tax and within the EU include tax. The retail price is 499€ including tax for EU customers. For non EU customers the price is 399€ excluding tax, but import costs will even things out. We understand it caused some confusion, which it also did for us. But we believe we now have all prices correctly adjusted so it does not affect anyone!

@postbuz Thank you for your information. MAEN had an argument with non-EU backers who claimed the VAT refund. MAEN’s answer was no, unfortunately, but they also promised that they would make tax refund option at their online store.
Therefore this simply means MAEN did what they had said to do, but the lack of explanation caused confusion among project backers.
I don’t think this is a calculated move, as other backers said, but I hope if MAEN could share a bit more information on their activities so that they could avoid unnecessary attacks from backers.

Yes postbuz, that is correct. I am based in Europe but on a business trip to the USA, so I logged in from the states when I saw that price.
postbuz
Review from Kickstarter
When I log from within the EU I see a price of €499 (including the free watch-roll). When I log in from outside the EU I see a price of €399.20 (again including the free watch-roll). So the webshop is set to distinguish between orders on which VAT is due & those on which no VAT is due. That not unusual, is it?

@andrea
My point exactly from below. They said that they would change it to 499. And then a week later. Back at 399 with a free watch roll.

Price on the site still shows €399 though, including a free watch roll

Well, a free watch-roll as an enticement while stocks last, looks to me like a reasonable thing to get, when you have to buy at full retail. I dealt with Maen before and they are really good guys, even if they err once... But they corrected this, so water under the bridge. Meanwhile, I hope they keep us updated about progress, to start with the highly anticipated pictures of the clasp :-)

@eumar but if you read below, MAEN did say they’d still offer the watchroll... On their website you can pre-order (not buy) for €499 and get a free watch roll. Ok, so maybe shipping is free; and maybe you’re better protected as you’ve actually made an online purchase, not a pledge. But they’re not undercutting the backer deals and they’re not selling the limited edition series. They also offered backers the option to get spare parts and to upgrade the mechanism, which I don’t now see being offered. I’ve no doubt MAEN will deliver a quality product as they’ve done so far with their other timepieces and yes they are still learning how to build a loyal fan-base. Ok so we all make mistakes but all of you commenting negatively below have presumably also backed a Hudson so I simply don’t understand why you want to dig the knife in rather than support MAEN. Don’t you want your Hudson to be great? I’m sure MAEN will surprise again in a good way as they did before when they announced the Swiss Made.

@berry unfortunately, the deal is still going on their website. And even independent of everything else, like Wyatt has mentioned. It was definitely misleading on their part. And even IF the watch is great. In all likelihood I won't ever back Maen again. I'll just wait until they put it on the site and get a better deal.

Review from Kickstarter
After all the complaints, let's look at what we all have bought. Because I'm still glad I bought one. And just kept it simple: 38mm, closed case back, white dial. So no extra costs and the most practical version with 200m water resistance. All for the money with an elaboré ETA 2824 and sapphire crystal? I'm not complaining. I made a choice to buy one and from then on got more than expected (elaboré, Swiss made). I don't regret my decision and expect to receive a very fine watch.
Well, after all, maybe I do have a complaint.... it's a long wait. I can hardly wait to get my hands on it!

@Barry. Nothing is for free. They showed us the decorated movement in the beginning and then asked to pay more to get one like that...
Every single move in this campaign was calculated very carefully. Extra case back, lume pip, everything. This is business.

I am very excited about the watch and am glad I backed it. It is still a good bang for your buck watch. How many makers would upgrade your movement at no cost upgrade? Think about that too.

So what!? I’m now expecting a “Limited” Edition as well as a VIP signed example. Can’t wait to receive the beauty! Knowing nobody else will get that chance anymore! Love it! If the quality is as good as we will expect, totally worth the money!

They only pulled the offer because they got found out. A bit disingenuous. If they hadn’t got rumbled, they may have left it out there. The original backers have good reason to feel they have been misled. “I’m sorry I got caught. I’ll stop now.” I won’t back them again.

I had a strange feeling something like this might happen. Inflate the "true" selling price and claim a nonexistent "savings",true selling price is 399eur. And to add insult to injury, free shipping and free watch roll. So through the website I would have gotten a better deal!

@MAEN in terms of watchmaking you have no-nonsense moves such as upgraded movements and metal chapter rings. I have to agree that some of your business manipulations aren't wise, but you're a young brand in the process of learning. What I want to say is... please just stay focused on making good watches; that's all I want!

Hi guys - No need to stress.. The abandoned check-out for the watchroll was an error. We have been working on our back-end and we just increased the price for the Hudson to €499,- People will get a free watchroll until the watches are in stock as compensation for the long wait instead. Although we felt that it was not too strange to offer people a discount until the watches are in stock, we realise that we should have communicated this on KS. Apologies for that!

Wow... Thats a fist in the face for all backers... a no risk preorder actually cheaper than even the vip discount full risk pledge... Most people didn't even have the chance to back vip... My only solace, the watch roll will nowhere be near worth 60$.

Just received:
"We noticed there were some items left in your shopping cart.

you will receive a free watch travel case worth 59€
Just make sure to add the travel roll to your shopping cart

So, 399€ free shipping and free travel case. I will buy another Hudson 38, blue dial this time, thanks

@ jonjon: You don't hear me disagreeing that we've "all backed a great value timepiece and helped MAEN team on their journey" :-) Point is that the future retail price was used as an enticement for us to make our pledge. If that future retail price would have been indicated as €399, I might well still have pledged. But is not. Maen says "People will now have to wait around 4 months if they order the watch, so that is why we offer a 20% pre-order discount. We should have mentioned this more cleary". This 20% pre-order discount was never communicated here at all, to the best of my knowledge. So it's not sufficient to say "We should have mentioned this more cleary", when it never was. @Maen watches: If it was communicated during the campaign, please, tell me where and I stand corrected.
This has all the appearance of a short term driven effort to "sell" as many watches as possible during the campaign under less than truthful pretenses rather than building a brand. And that bugs me.

I don't understand what Maen has in mind. These series of bad moves might harm the brand.
I'm not a collector nor i intend to resell, so value is not that important to me. But i understand that value, to a brand who takes it self seriously, must be well defined.
What they did to the previous collection is kind of a slam in the mud for the brand.

Everyone... discount or no discount, that really isn’t the issue here as you’ve all backed a great value timepiece and helped MAEN team on their journey ;)

Review from Kickstarter
I think that part of the reason that many people like myself made a pledge was because they were presented a project for a good looking functional watch with a decent discount from the purported future retail price. If the supposed price advantage was say 10% or less I am sure they would have had little success. The discount of 30% off this supposed RRP helped as all we had to go on were a few photos taken in a studio of a pre-production model which at close inspection was far from perfect. This was to be expected and we all hope that the finished product is up to the standard Maen has advertised. There was no physical product to be seen and I made my pledge in the belief that I was receiving a substantial discount bearing this in mind. What irks me is that this is not the case as the watch is now available to the general public at €399 including shipping while I as a backer on the first day have paid €369. A real discount of only 7.5% that to be honest has made me feel that I have been taken on a ride! Perhaps I should have been more diligent and checked the Maen website to see what had happened to their previous product launches as mentioned by @postbuz.
I have made a pledge and have been charged but I have to say that if I could I would now back out as I don't think that the guys at Maen have marketed their product with total honesty.
postbuz
Review from Kickstarter
@Mark: I realize that this a pledge & fully understand that it is not purchase. Maen features the future retail very prominently, it is the first item listed with every reward. If it is never likely to be sold at that price or if the chances of it actually happening are slim, than just don't feature as a pledge argument. We may disagree up-til now, but I'm all for transparency. That lack of openness, bugs me much more than what I'm actually NOT saving. I still think it's a great watch at the price. Just be open and honest about your intention. I was not aware they were selling a previous watch that started here at KS with a retail price of €249 for €139. And this is where I think we agree. Maen should build & maintain its brand carefully & this could well be to their detriment over time. If you can pick them up later for less, why pledge? I like this brand, so I'm actually worried that may bite them in the tail.

Is the ghost white now a limited? I got the ghost white only because I have plenty of black dial watches. Maybe we can get the pip bezel with the “limited” ghost white 😬. I am excited about the watch and can’t wait to open the box!

My wrist would make a stick insect embarrassed so I'm glad for a 38mm dive watch. (Even though I don't dive. Summers, I do swim a lot.) Very much looking forward to seeing the watch.

Review from Kickstarter
@Maen, I'm very much looking forward to the finished pieces and overall am happy that the watch offers value for money for what I pledged, so long as the QC is done well! :) Overall though my remaining comment on the thread below would be please carefully consider how you represent the value of your brand. Value is confidence as much as quality and confidence is hugely diminished by large discounting as there is no confidence in the buyer that it won't be significantly cheaper in future. Your massive current "end of line" discounts on your website certainly diminish my confidence that I won't be able to pick up a Hudson cheaper in 6-9 months. I want to see your brand flourish, but brands rarely do this when they heavily devalue their own products.
Mark
Review from Kickstarter
Agree on the shipping cost vs. free shipping thing as it devalues the original KS pricing if included on their site. Overall disagree though. You have to remember you're making a pledge to help the project succeed and getting a reward. You're not actually purchasing a watch - and the RRP is meaningless because it's never been sold at that price and maybe never will be. (Just look at Maens current massive reductions, ~40%, on their previous models on their site). If you're happy with the value for money proposition of the watch and the design then any future RRP is irrelevant unless you're purchasing for investment, which for a micrograms would be pretty risky!

Review from Kickstarter
@Nuno Mendes: It's not about the money. I backed, not because I needed an umpteenth watch, but because I wanted these guys to succeed. But as I may well never actually wear it, it would be nice if the indicated retail price was real in case I would want to dispose of it. Not looking for profit BTW, just not a lack of a second-hand market. I don't eat cookies. If you think I sounded emotional, so do I on second thought, but there's a thin line between love and hate.
