Discovered on 2018-06-07

Enhance your focus with the FOCI Focus Enhancing Wearable. By clipping to your waist, this device captures your cognitive states. Likewise, it uses a stream of colored orbs to represent each state, helping you see your mind and understand yourself better. When you lose focus, Mind Orb switches color right away. This increased self-awareness enables you to stay on track and focused. You can also review each minute of your cognitive states at the end of the day. Additionally, FOCI improves focus in the same way that a personal trainer improves your fitness. It realizes your potential by analyzing records and encourages you to achieve more a bit more. It works as an assistant that helps you focus again when you start to become stressed or distracted. Just follow the step-by-step mental strategies that FOCI presents, and you’ll quickly bounce back to your optimal state of mind.

@ Emily. Great idea! Currently, mental fatigue orbs and reminders are triggers for breaks, but we can definitely encourage more appropriate breaks and stretches help user work better. We'll look into this more closely.

Would be great to include reminders for taking breaks/stretching

@Anthony, Thank you for the question. It is indeed a very important question which contains 2 aspects. Firstly, FOCI’s capacity as neurofeedback device help users identify the “attention muscle” and strengthen it, and secondly, to aide behaviour changes. In our testing at Cambridge University, the device has been used by people without a diagnosed attention disorder. The results are very promising for both aspects. However it has not been tested with ADHD users, but notably, many aspects of its AI mind coaching are similar to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, shown to improve for ADHD in adults.

@Flip, thank you for the heads up on the error! You are right about the color been chosen for meaning they convey, (which may vary culture to culture) and they are strong peripheral cues for us create awareness of our mind state as a precondition for adaptive regulation of these states.

Hi Mick, with the mind orbs what are the colours you've chosen for each mind state? How did you choose the colours? Are they related to colour therapy and the meaning that each colour conveys? For example, in a very general sense, yellow is seen to stimulate the mind, blue has a calming affect, red stimulates energy and passion, green is soothing and related to nature and harmony, and so on. Are you basing the colours on a similar principle?

@Dave A—W Awesome suggestion! It is capable of doing inhalation and exhalation ratio, but we do need to do a prototype to see how it could combine with the pranayama training.

Suggestion: additional pranayama mode(s), to assist in training you to breathe according to various in-out ratios and styles taught by yoga (& other practices)

@Joshua Chang, u are correct - the limitation of training data for an individualization makes this type of machine learning much more proficient. we do cross check with other algorithms on our server to normalize discrepancies with the 'on the fly' bayes learning. In terms of academic studies, there are quite a number from Tenenbaum of MIT. Opensourcing might not be the right time for us but we can definitely think about opening up SDKs if there is demand for it!

you should open source the app, put it on github or something (no need to share your specific ml algorithm). Also, what makes your algorithm more accurate? Have you done studies on using bayes for ml? I know it's good for accuracy with low training data

Probably a silly question, but will there be a way to change bubble colors? It might just be me, but I feel like I'll aim for focus more if I make it my favorite color.

@Chakris: thank you for the question! The technology that FOCI uses is different from conventional sleep monitors. However, it does differentiate your breathing when you sleep or relaxed, from other states. One of our Alpha Testers actually worn it for sleep, and here is his experience ‘One night, I forgot to take the FOCI off and realised so only in the morning. I checked the app, and it showed the 'calm' state for nearly the entire night.’

@Flip, awesome questions! and thank you for backing us. As you noted, focus is really a composite of scientific concepts and everyday definitions. Getting to the details, focus is about the ability to, 1) tune out visual-auditory distractions (stimulus suppression) 2) control procrastination and focus on goal (self-regulation) 3) sustain prolonged attention (directed attention fatigue tolerance) 4) get into an effortless deep focus state (flow) Different aspects of FOCI are designed to tackle different aspects of the problem. a) The visualization of your real mind is designed to improve focus-2 (see procrastination equation) and also in part focus-4 (see flow theory), but could potentially reduce focus-1 as you mentioned. So it really depends on user’s individual situation to decide whether to use it. Many of our testers would actually keep the cognitive biometrics open as the work and use this as a motivational aid while they work. b) Focus pal is designed to improve focus-2 in some users (see gamification theory), but potentially might reduce focus-2 in some users, as you noted. It really depends on the individual users to get the benefit from this feature. The balance of probability and analysis, with so many psychological methodologies, is not straightforward, notwithstanding individuality, which is why AI mind coach is so important in FOCI to help users make better choices and improve focus.

@Tinylogics: I read your stretch goal update #2 and had a few thoughts. Isn't "taking a surreptitious peak" (even if it is in your peripheral vision), paying attention to "keeping my mind orb yellow" and "stealing a look at other's record", by definition, being unfocused? Also, isn't competition a distraction, which by definition, is being unfocused? It would mean you are taking your mind off whatever task you are currently focused on. Sorry I teach English and 'my focus' is always on the psychology of words that people use. Focus is simply focus in this moment here and now, not an attempt to get a result. Any attempt to compete with another would also mean you're becoming unfocused. You could also point out that taking measurements (to improve your mental performance) is another form of distraction. We seem to be getting into an endless paradox! I'm wondering if there is a way to monitor your focus without affecting it? It's the same as quantum physicists realising that it is impossible to observe an electron without changing its behaviour. This product might possibly be more useful then as a fun gimmick used as a playful device like you suggest with the 'Focus Pal', which is ultimately just another distraction for people. Please don't think I'm telling anyone not to buy the product. I think it is a very intelligent device that you've created and I commend you for that. I might still buy it because it does look like it will be fun to play with, and I'm interested in the mind techniques and to see how the AI mind coach works. All the best!

@Leonardo David Penafiel Schweitzer, FOCI is able to operate and store around a few days of data before having to sync with the cellphone. This is after the initial learning phase which will take around a day. However, the downside of using FOCI without the phone is missing out a variety of App-based features such as mind techniques which is a very powerful tool to boost focus.

Thank you @Stephanie for sharing! We all tend to do this. In fact, I remember just a few years ago, I was in my college library at midnight, people were cramming for finals and still browsing Facebook! Social media are designed to be habit-forming and get us hooked. And this is a problem we hope to solve with FOCI. As for the the connection question, FOCI uses a specific bayesian inference technology which allow us to go without the phone, after the initial learning phase. Put in plain words, you can go without the phone after it finishes learning about you in around a day, you will get guidance with haptic feedback from the device. However, the downside of using it without your phone is that you would be missing out a variety of App based features such as mind techniques which is a very powerful tool to boost your focus.

Wow such a good idea guys! I used to be very addicted to Facebook back in college, which didn’t help much on top of my procrastination - I’d mindlessly open my Facebook in the midst of my research and wasted hours there. Wish I had one of these back then! Pledged for a family pack and gonna give one to my cousin, who is just going to college this fall. Got one question though, does it need to be connected to our phones all the time for us to know what states we are in? I really hope not - otherwise both my phone and the device itself will lose battery very soon. And honestly, if I need to check phone to see what my state is that would actually distract me. A bit oxymoron isn’t it? Any thoughts on how you guys are solving this?

Hi @Alexander Berezovsky, both products use breathing data as input.
FOCI is designed to solve a different problem for a different group of users - to fight distraction and improve focus. In terms of the technology, we use a very specialized Bayesian machine learning technology which offers very different user experience.

@Louis Lee. Thank you for supporting us again! We’ll look into it. It is also possible to use FOCI to increase self awareness of attention fatigue and to approach stressful situations with calm. So coupled with mind techniques such as 'if-then' technique, where FOCI guides user to identify the autopilot action, to get user’s buy-in to a preferred action and raise psychological awareness to what is affecting them subconsciously. So, it is designed to help us get into more desirable behaviors on top of focus.

@Rajkumar In our testing at Cambridge University, the device has been used by people without a diagnosed attention disorder, attention improvement has been very promising. But to establish FOCI as neurofeedback device to increase attentiveness in ADHD, it would need some serious work for research groups down in the university.
