@Dean, I hope you can get through to them where I couldn’t. They don’t care about my messages anymore. As you can see they keep using the same the rhetoric about it being in the FAQs. What they fail to realize, if we didn’t have a question, we wouldn’t have gone to those to read. It truthful transparent promoting, they would have mentioned they have a fully functioning app companion for $24.99 or you can choose one of the series of free apps to obtain that functionality. Download 6 different apps to get the functionality of their one app. It’s deceitful and false advertising. They obviously feel they have a strong enough following and enough success that is few complainers on here won’t affect their business model. Plus they already have our money, so what do they care? If we want the nice streamlined app, all in one then we cough up another $24.99. Basically companies that prey on people’s ignorance are the bane of my existence. And I wish there was more support here on the forum. If the majority of the backers complain on here, and threaten to charge back the cc’s, maybe they’ll do something. Hopefully your added voice sends it over the tipping point! I’ll continue to follow and see. Hopefully others will speak up as well.

in fairness there is a mentioned 'free to try' which I don't recall either but that's on me most likely (it does look like a caption to a picture actually so that might be why).

@Creator - Hi, please show me again where on the Campaign page it mentions the software is paid? I'll help you out - it doesn't.
My guess from your last comment is that we'll either get the functionality crippled free version or have to pay extra to get the most from the device we just backed your company to make? Probably wouldn't hurt to give people a download code for the app considering it isn't device specific in terms of your Kiwi units and is a good faith idea. Just to clarify by the way - I don't recall any entries in the FAQ when I pledged and it seems they were created 2 days prior to end of campaign (and a day after my pledge)? or was that a modification date?

@PLX burying something on your FAQs is not fully disclosing. And I don’t want to download 6 other apps to get all the functionality. I was interested in backing this because all the functionality would be available in one app. YOUR app. Completely disappointed and I haven’t even received the product. Good job guys!!

We plan to deliver Kiwi 4 in time for the Holidays. Yes it can read chassis codes. For transmission and abs, Kiwi 4 has the capability to read it depending if the vehicle manufacturer supports the specific parameter. In some vehicles requesting ABS will return data, in others it will not. It's entirely manufacturer specific and not related to Kiwi's hardware capabilities. Kiwi OBD is free to try and paid for use. Software support as been fully disclosed prior to campaign's end. Please see FAQ, project page and comments section. Kiwi 4 hardware is compatible with about a dozen apps that range from free to paid. With your pledge you get all the items necessary to use your device. No additional purchases is necessary for your reward to function. Thank you everyone for your comments. Have a beautiful weekend. If you have any specific questions or suggestions, please feel free to message us, submit a support ticket on our website or give us a call +1-408-745-7591 M-F 8am-5pm PST. We're here to help. @PLX it feels really good as a backer to ask a question “What are you going to for us?” Down below and not get a reasonable reply. Not even your usual cut and paste answer? Does this mean I’m no a valued backed of your product? Because I’m the vocal one saying what everyone else is thinking? Come on guys, you can do better then that! Give is a solution we can live with.

@PLX, please really stop with this full disclosure, fully transparent BS. Please stop directing us to your customer service line. Stop telling us about other 3rd party apps. If you were fully transparent you would have disclosed in the project page that for the app to be fully functioning, your required to purchase an app. And the cost involved. Not hidden in the FAQ that few people even look at, especially those who have NO QUESTIONS. As for back pedaling and suggest other 3rd party apps will work with it, really??? We chose your product based on everything we saw including the functionality of the app we thought was included. Tell is what you are going to do for us.

@PLX we have to wait until November for you to decide what you want to do with the software component? So we are out of our time frame to request credit card charge backs? I made the pledge knowing I’d wait until November for a fully functioning device. Not a pledge waiting for the possibility for an item that won’t function the way you said it will without an add-on software package. It’s June. November is 6 months away. It doesn’t take that long to figure out what to do. Do the right thing and offer your backers the knowledge that when they receive their pledge in 6 months it will come me with a fully functioning app as promised. No strings attached. Make the decision now. Not 6 months from now. Not a good enough answer. And we all know your customer service line. We don’t need to open a ticket or contact them. We need you to be open to all us backers on your solution.

I am with everyone else here. I did not see on the FAQ page about a paid app. That is awful ethics, and bad customer service. I hope your pledge manager has an option to back out if that is to stand, because selling a "fully functional" piece of equipment with out the app designed to run it is NOT "fully functional". And "8+ 3rd party apps" that are not not designed for the equipment is NOT "fully functional" as they will not and cannot take full advantage of the finer details of the equipment. As before, I expect to have a refund button on the pledge manager if the paid app is to stand.

@PLX as much as you say it was fully disclosed in the FAQs, the fact is most people DO NOT go to the FAQ page unless they have questions, hence what it stands for. “Frequently Asked Questions”. I had no questions. It seemed pretty clear to me that the features you described in the project page would be included. No where does it say that it would be a paid app. No where does it say depending on features you want you can purchase them separately in the app, or bundle for $25. No where does it give any indication except that you download the app and get those features. BAIT AND SWITCH. Draw them in and force them to buy your app with those features. I contributed to this campaign based on the features of the app, and assumed it was an all in price. Every single contribution I have ever made on KS or IGG that had an associated app, it was 100% free. Very disappointed. And please don’t direct me to your customer service line. Why? So I can call and listen to someone tell me it was in the FAQ. Really guys, you are fully aware what you did. Own up to it. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Offer your backers a free fully functioning app, or a deeply discounted one. You mislead everyone here. I challenge any backer here to tell me they knew there was an additional $25 out of pocket expense for the fully functioning app. Except those who had questions and went to the FAQ. I mean the ones who had no questions and thought your campaign was clear, concise and HONEST. I feel like some guy who bought a car off a used car lot and the salesman told me it was owned by a grandma who drove it to church on Sundays and that was it. And it turns out that half the cylinders are stripped, and the motor is about to seize because the last oil change was 80,000 KMs ago. Omission is still a lie. Not telling someone everything is still a lie. Thanks for the lies. Shows me the integrity’s your company is crap. Own the lie, and make up for it. Admit you made a mistake, fix it and you may gain some credibility back. ....steps off the soap box.

the paid app part was dirty.
it's like 25$ more to get all the features you promised. kinda annoying and I feel bad about it, shouldn't have been like that, you should have said it clearly in the campaign! also, we're helping you bring this product to life, isn't it fair that if you charge for the app at least it would be less than additional 25$??? I feel cheated, it turns out I'm rich enough to buy cheap.

@PLX Devices - Not upset or angry but no where on the campaign page does it suggest you'd have to buy your app (nor does it say you won't have to either) so I would say it was not fully disclosed unless you go to the FAQ section (which many of us don't unless we have questions not answered in the campaign). In this case a simple asterisk at the end of the app name and a footnote would have been enough to alert us that perhaps this wasn't included Cheers for taking it all on board though :)

@Jason Boyd - I had a bit of a look and it seems it works with any other freebie so there's plenty of choice for an app. I was pretty surprised it wasn't included though (as it's shown in the campaign and no little "*" or any other indication it's not other than the FAQ which, as you said, I only read if there's anything I'm not sure of - like if there was an indication the app wasn't included. Not saying it was misleading intentionally in that sense but it definitely should have been indicated on the campaign page.

@Dean, I’m an Apple user and may end up doing same in App Store. Cannot get a simple straight answer. It’s completely bait and switch. Which in many places is illegal. But it appears with KS and IGG, they follow their own rules. Even if we reported them to KS, they wouldn’t do F-all about it. So sick of creators over promising and under delivering.

@Jason Boyd - I'm with you completely on this, I've done so many KS/IGG campaigns that have apps associated which are always included for free for backers.
I had no questions, the campaign outline was detailed enough. I just found out we needed the app as well although I think I'll connect it to something else as the reviews for it on Google Play aren't great at all.

Kiwi 4 will retail for $149. Backers have received over 40% discount (plus free worldwide shipping) by backing us on Kickstarter. As we get closer to fulfillment, we can comment on the costs of our Kiwi OBD app. At this time, licencing prices are detailed in the FAQ. Our team will consider all options and do our best to offer our backers and valued customers the best value possible as Kiwi 4 starts fulfillment. There is no upper end capacity to the SD card. Kiwi 4 stores text based CSV format. Users will find a 16GB drive to be more than adequate to store years of data. Thank you everyone for your comments. Any questions, please feel free to message us.

I know for a fact, unless I have a question I won’t read the FAQ. So, I’m sure many of you will agree you don’t go to the FAQ page unless you have a specific question. Nothing in you campaign eludes to the fact you have spend more money to pay for the full functionality of the app. This is misleading. If you claim to be transparent, why isn’t it there??

PLEASE ALL BACKERS TAKE A MOMENT AND READ THIS ALL THE WAY THROUGH! #KSkiwi4less @Kiwi4 - let’s try and be as simple as possible. In order to use the FULL functionality of this device, and using YOUR app, what will be the total cost of your PERMANENT licenses. Cut and dry. No discussion about other apps. Just simply a dollar figure. Secondly, based on the misleading presentation of your project, how will you help compensate us, the backers that brought your project to life? My suggestion is to give us all a coupon code to bring it to a very reasonable amount. My feelings would be $10 or less. I’m speaking for myself, but I’m confident many other backers will agree. @all If you as the other backers agree with me, please #KSkiwi4less. If we don’t get what we want, I’d suggest contacting your CC to dispute the transaction based on false and misleading advertising for the product. If enough of us do this, we can force their hand to do this for us. #KSkiwi4less

I am surprised to find out that full use of the app is not included. The licensing of the app was not made clear. From my perspective this is deceptive promotion of this product. If the app was an add-on it should have been outlined clearly, as the entire video shows its use. It could have been listed as a bundle option reward, which would have made it clear that the app was extra. Almost every item I’ve supported on Kickstarter uses an app as part of the package, either for setup or full functionality and every time they were included as part of the package. And with every one updates are all included. Very disappointed in this campaign. If I knew this earlier I would have pull out. PLX, the full app needs to be free for backers!!

Well said Christopher, I agree entirely.
Saving 4 cents to purchase the package is ...
I think long term supporters should be getting some perks.
I have the Kiwi 3 and am really after the data logging, but I will be looking very hard at any future offerings if they don't lift their game.

Review from Kickstarter
I have to say, I'm a little distraught with the deceptiveness of the backing video, portraying the idea that the app functionality is included. Here is an image from the Kiwi 4 Kickstarter campaign video mentioning app support, as if the hardware includes the apps:
https://ibb.co/dNPzFo
Really, this is what it should have looked like, to be honest with backers:
https://ibb.co/hpDFo8 That being said, I've read through the comments, and to save other backers the time, this is what I've learned:
1. The software is available for Android and iOS.
2. On iTunes there are 2 version of the app: “Kiwi OBD” and “Kiwi OBD KS” - DO NOT DOWNLOAD/INSTALL "Kiwi OBD KS" (the one referred to as costing $139).
3. Once downloaded and installed, the configuration part of the app can be used for free without any extra fee/payment "for life".
4. All other features of the app MUST BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY AND ARE NOT INCLUDED with the kiwi 4 hardware backing pledge - you have 1 hour to TRY the full feature list free of charge, then YOU MUST PAY FOR ANY USE OF THE FEATURES.
5. Cost of features through the kiwi app:
Simple gauges view, Diagnostics, and Fuel Efficiency - $9.99 (they call this the "basic license")
Video Overlay - add $5
Data Logging - add $5 (which I'm guessing without this purchase, the SD card is useless because nothing will be logged)
Performance - add $5
To rub a bit of salt in the wounds, it looks like you can purchase all the functionality for $24.95 (referred to as the "Deluxe License"), which, for anyone with a bit of basic math background, means you will save exactly 4 cents by purchasing ALL the functionality (very bizarre, most companies have a "full feature" purchase price offering one included feature for free to encourage the full feature purchase). There is also some mention of paying extra for software updates. Hopefully that will not be the case.
6. They are quick to say Kiwi can be used with many other apps such as Torque, OBD Fusion, Harry's Lap Timer, OBD Doctor, Carista, Shift OBD. Some free, some paid. I don't think ANY of the 3rd party apps would be capable of logging to the SD card. Because they were over 600% backed, I really hope they give the backers, the people who supported them from the beginning, many of whom bought v3 or older, the full-feature app at no extra cost (with a code or whatever), especially in view of the misguided, if not deceptive promotional video.

I have supported multiple PLX Kickstarter campaigns and can say they do deliver on their promises. I have the previous version of Kiwi as well, and can vouch for it - it works well. The first party software needs a lot of work, but there is plenty of third party software that supports is as well.
PLX seriously need to improve their communication skills, but they do deliver on their projects, and they do come up with innovative hardware well worth considering.

I intend to just stuff in an SD chip, have it download the data to the chip, then tear the data apart. As long as it's properly CSVed and titled, there should be no problem.

Review from Kickstarter
The kiwi OBD app for the Kickstarter version of kiwi4 is listed as $139.99 CAD on App Store (“Kiwi OBD KS”)... that is really expensive. I know you mentioned there may be free apps and cheaper apps that are also compatible but those are not made specifically for the kiwi4 and they are very rudimentary with poor reviews. I wish that this campaign was more straight forward with letting backers know clearly and upfront that they are expected to pay an additional $139.99 CAD for the Kiwi OBD app for full operation of the Kiwi4 they are pledging for. That way a backer can reasonably know how much the total costs will be to make this device fully functional.

The response from PLX is not clear at all. As kickstarter has mentioned, the Kiwi OBD is free to "try". Can kickstarter answer the following questions:
1) Is there a limited duration of "trying"?
2) What are the features available during the "trying" period?
3) What are the features that are only available after the "trying" period? I am not keen to pay for any paid app.

Wait a minute... Your response relating to your App is totally unclear. Please let me have a clear and unequivocal answer. Is your App free of charge? If not totally free of charge, please let me know what features are free and what features are not. I am on the fence leaning towards withdrawing cos I never agree with creators who charge for their App merely to use their creation.

Just for fun I bought a Kiwi 3 from PLX devices website last week. It came in the mail in 3 days. Upon first impression, the unit is well built, well designed and it installed flush with my OBD port. I had no issues connecting it with the kiwi app with access lots of metrics handy. I played around with the drive green mode and it did save me a little bit of fuel. Improved my MPG from about 25 to 31. I'm impressed with the 3 and I'm looking forward to testing the 4.!
