Firefly Swiss Army Knife Fire Starter

Editor's Rating
4.7?
Discovered on 2017-10-11

Always be prepared when you have the Firefly Swiss Army Knife Fire Starter. The Firefly is a sparking steel that totally upgrades your everyday carry knife. Sliding into the SAK toothpick slot, it uses a custom blend of rare earth elements to provide sparks when you need it. In fact, it’s twice as strong and twice as easy to spark as traditional firesteel tools. Furthermore, The Firefly is also softer to help prevent damage to your knife edges. You can also use it with a saw, file, can opener, pliers, scissors, knife blade, fish scaler, and much more. Because of its integration with the toothpick slot, the Firefly works with other Swiss Army tools with toothpicks. In addition, it comes in the Firefly Mini version for more compact knives. Finally, the glow in the dark thumbnail grip at the top makes it easy to pull out at any time.

I've lost 2 from 3 fireflys cause they are to tiny for my swiss knifes?
On the 3rd I've used a little scotch tape aroud the firefly to let it hold correct. :/

Hi Eric, thank you very much for your quick response. I didn't want to push any harder because I was afraid of breaking either the Firefly or the Swiss Card. :) So I followed your second suggestion and rounded of the corners on the end. Now it slides in and fits perfect! :) Thanks again for this great tool! Martin

Thanks everyone for the updates and feedback!
@ Those who are still waiting for theirs - The last rewards batch was shipped out at the end of the last week of May. Please allow up to 6 weeks for international transit as delays can and do happen with transit, handling, customs, etc.
@Martin Hagedorn - Thank you! The Firefly Mini fits perfectly into the Swiss Cards. Try pushing a little harder to push it in, it should be a snug fit. If that doesn't work then slightly file the corners on the end to be rounded and it should slide right past that bump.

Received mine in Australia a couple of days ago
Works well
I ground the back of my knife lightly with a bench grinder, so as to get a good edge to spark the firefly

Got my Firefly Variety Pack today in Germany. Glad, I backed this project. These little thingies work really good, although I've got to improve my technique a little more. :) Could easily fit the bigger one to my Ranger Grip with wire cutters. But: The small ones don't fit into my Swiss Card. The toothpick has a small bump, to hold it in place. At 1,5 cm on the inside of the Card, there is also some sort of bump, which matches the one of the toothpick. I can't get the Firefly past this interior bump. Do you have any suggestions on that? Carefully striking the Firefly on the thicker side until it fits? I also like the chosen packaging, because the instructions are completely printed on it and not on a separate note. You can't loose them this way. The biggest plus about it: You can close it again, so it functions as a container for the Fireflies you don't need right now. I also noted two things at the tips. The first thing is, that the ivory color is not really matching the color of the original toothpick. It is more of a lighter grey color. But I don't mind this, as long as you can see a difference to the tweezers. :) The second thing I noted is, that the ivory tips glow easier/better in the dark than the neon ones. At least in the short test I did on that. But since I always carry my SAK in a pocket or bag, I don't think, that I will ever make use of that glowing feature. ;) Thank you guys for this great product! Can't wait for my next camping trip! :)

Received in Scotland. Both sizes spark well first time using the back of the saw. Customs and Royal Mail added handing charges but that’s unavoidable

Received mine in Cairns, Australia yesterday. Sparks really well and lit tinder without too much fuss. Excellent work team! Thanks very much. Bush walking and camping next with the kids so I’m sure it will be well used.

Her Majesty's Customs and Excise added a hefty whack to the cost in import duty and our beloved post office added their own handling charge but well worth it. Watched the videos and sparked up tinder without any difficulty. Fits my Climber and other SWKs well. Nice work, guys!

I still havent received anything in the post. I would think $13 postage to Australia should get here faster than 10 weeks when these were apparently posted. Could I have some help please tortoise gear.

Got mine! all intact. :-) Though must say, possible reason of the breakage I read about by other supporters - that the mini firefly was shaken loose within the container. While mine seems unbroken, being loose and shaken - might cause breakage. :-) Suggestion to add some sort of "sponge-like" material to better pack the minis. Thanks for successful delivery! :-)

I just received my pledge (in Brazil). They look great! It was a tight fit in a VictorInox SwissChamp model and a quite loose fit in a VictorInox ReescueTool, but it seems not to fall off. Seems like the thoothpick has a small bump that holds it in place. Since the Firefly is a straight rectangular volume, it seems to be a bit loose in some models. has anyone else noticed that in a RescueTool? (Why would a RescueTool have a thoothpick anyways)

@Adam - Fireflys are SUPER easy to spark if you have a good sharp corner or edge. It sounds like the back of your saw is probably dull for some reason. We'll message you and help you get this worked out so you can get your Fireflys working properly.

so, I hope I am in the minority, but I was pretty disappointed with the performance of the firefly I read and re-read the instructions and know it is not like a normal firesteel using the back of the saw on my SAK I can barley get it to spark at all. I found a ceramic striker and this did work better, but not by much I tried multiple of the fireflys in the pack and no difference was found I tried hard-soft, fast-slow, different angles etc It was really not easy to light the jute twine in the package at all I have used many different firesteels and have been out personally on bushcraft and completed courses in it. I found that using a rubbish cheapy one from china (like £1 for a pack of 5 mini steels) worked better and light my fire steels way way better. Even in comparison to high density steels I have had these still sparked eaiser ------------------------ Any suggestions Tortoise Gear?

@diplopoda, the Firefly does fit the Ranger Grip series, it just requires a few second modification. Please read our last comment a few comments below.

Thank you everyone for the great feedback! @Matthias and anyone having fitment issues with a particular knife: The Firefly was designed to fit the toothpick slot 95% of Victorinox Swiss Army knives perfectly. For the other 5% that it doesn't fit in perfectly (Rangergrip, evogrip, some older ones) it only requires a few second modification to trim it to the perfect length to make it work for that knife. Just take some wire snippers and snip off the end to the right length. For those who have knives with battered or loose scales causing the Firefly to fit too loose just add a dab of super glue to the top of the Firefly just under the thumb grip and let it dry. This creates a bump on the Firefly to give you a custom snug fit just how you want it. These and other tips are covered towards the end of our "Tips and Tricks" video on our website: http://tortoisegear.com/product-video-2/

Arrived in NL today. (backer 1319) Fit is very snug; that's a good thing. Had to shorten the large firefly a little for the perfect fit. It's smoother than I thought it would be, which means striking technique is even more important than already dictated by the small form factor. With the tip to sharpen the nail file for striking to prevent dulling scissors and knive blades, it works like a charm.

OK everyone. By the end of tomorrow we will have almost every package shipped out. Next week we will be contacting the few people who have issues with their shipping addresses, didn't fill out their survey completely, etc. Again, we cannot address every "where is my package" question. If you don't hear directly from us next week then your package has already shipped. Also, again, we cannot send tracking numbers out because Kickstarter does not have the option to link tracking numbers to your rewards. We will be posting an official update next week. Thank you!
