The new Galaxy clip-on earbuds could solve my biggest problem with open-ear earbuds
I have an open-ear earbud dilemma: most of them fall out of my ears. My ears are small, which means clip-on or wrap-around models simply fall off. So when Samsung announced the Galaxy Buds On, its first Galaxy clip-on earbuds, I wondered if it had finally made a breakthrough for people like me.
Sealed in-ear buds start to hurt long before my playlist ends, and most open-ear designs have me nudging them back into place every few blocks. Fair warning: these are first impressions based on Samsung’s announcement. I haven’t tried them yet.
Galaxy Clip-On earbuds take a different approach to fit
What if your earbuds didn’t have to go in or around your ears at all? The Galaxy Buds On use a clip-on design with a band that rests on the outer ear and leaves the canal open. Sony and Bose already make clip-on wireless earbuds, but this is a first for Samsung.
The appeal of open-ear listening is simple: less pressure inside your ear, and you can still hear traffic or someone calling your name.
Samsung says it drew on more than 119 million ear data points to shape the band for a low-pressure fit across different ear shapes. Fit is the first thing I judge earbuds on. The data can tell Samsung what most ears look like. It can’t tell me whether mine will feel fine at hour six.
Comfort matters more than another smart feature
Will I care about head gestures if the clip pinches? Probably not. My rule for earbuds is simple: if I’m thinking about them, they’ve failed.
On paper, the specs look solid. Galaxy Buds On battery life is rated at up to 9.5 hours of playback per charge and up to 38 hours total with the case. Audio Leakage Reduction projects reversed sound waves from the back of each speaker to reduce what people around you can hear. It also includes three microphones, a voice pickup unit that senses when you’re talking, and head gestures to nod or shake off calls.
Nice extras, but comfort, stability, sound quality, and clear calls come first.
Are Galaxy Buds On worth $229?
The Galaxy Buds On price is $229, and they’re expected in the U.S. in early November 2026. That’s premium money for a specific crowd: people who dislike traditional in-ear buds or can’t keep them in place.
There’s a trade-off. An open design can’t block noise the way sealed noise-canceling earbuds do, so a loud train or busy gym will compete with your music. And the clip’s real-world fit is still unproven.
Samsung is going after a real problem, and as someone who’s spent years choosing between sore ears and loose buds, I want this clip to work.
