By now, we’ve pretty much gotten used to wearing masks in public. What’s harder to get accustomed to is the way a mask prevents you from sharing your personality. How is the cashier at the grocery supposed to know that you’re giving him a slight smile as you place your food on the belt? It’s a small but important social exchange. A new face mask called the JabberMask can help. It’s an LED face mask that actually smiles when you do.

The JabberMask is one cool mask. It’s a voice-activated face mask that users can make smile on demand. That’s right; this mask features LEDs in the shape of a mouth that moves as you talk and smiles when you do. The mask portion is washable cotton in black, a color that really makes those LEDs pop. It’s a stylish design that has an instant fun factor and helps create a positive vibe around you. The people standing in line with you at the coffee shop are sure to strike up a few conversations about it.

Who designed this unique face mask?

Tyler Glaiel is the designer behind this innovative product. He’s a video game programmer and designer who’s created games like Closure, The End is Nigh (with Edmund McMillen), Bombernauts, as well as a bunch of flash games. So he’s a man who knows his tech.

How does this mask work?

From the video on the project’s Kickstarter page, the JabberMask seems pretty simple to use. You wear it just as you would any other mask and start talking. The “mouth,” a series of LEDs in the shape of a mouth, moves as yours does, giving you a digital “face” that shows your emotions. It’s a pretty neat concept and demonstrates that you don’t need to expose your face to express yourself.

And along with the workings of this LED mask is the voice-activated mic. While the Kickstarter page doesn’t divulge specifics about how it works, the product video shows Glaiel speaking while wearing the mask and the LED mouth moving as his does.

Does this smiling face mask have an app?

It sure does. The JabberMask mobile app is included with the JabberMask Pro bundle on Kickstarter. The app works with both iOS and Android, and it lets you select emojis, words, letters, and symbols for a customized look. So if you happen to be a little sleepy, you could choose the sleepy face emoji to let all your friends know. You can even set a playlist of customizations and adjust the mic, LED, and brightness settings. What’s more, the app even comes with a control fob for easier management. That’s right; you can control this facemask with a remote control in the pocket of your hoodie or an everyday backpack.

How does this customizable mask turn off?

At this point, you might be wondering if you have to turn this mask on and off every time you use it. The project’s Kickstarter page writes that each mask comes with a Sleep Mode to save battery life. So if you’re wearing the mask and haven’t spoken to anyone for a while, the JabberMask detects that and shuts itself off. This cuts down on battery use and ensures its long life. And, speaking of the battery, you should know that it’s lightweight and located on the back of the headband.

The JabberMask customizable LED face mask is unlike any face mask you’ve seen. Seriously, what other mask is voice activated and smiles when you do? The colorful LED lights make it fun and playful and the app offers plenty of expanded features. Covering your emotions can impact your social interactions, but a mask like this one can let those positive emotions show.

The JabberMask customizable LED face mask costs $29, and you can preorder it on Kickstarter.
